# AEM Sites to EDS Migration Assessment for AEM Edge Delivery Services

Analyze traditional AEM Sites implementations to identify every component, template, content type, and integration, then map each to its AEM Edge Delivery Services equivalent — blocks, document patterns, client-side approaches, or gaps that require net-new solutions. Produces a comprehensive migration feasibility report with phased plans, effort estimates, and risk assessments.

## Context

Traditional AEM Sites uses a server-side rendering model with components authored in Touch UI dialogs, Sling models for business logic, HTL templates for rendering, and content stored in the JCR repository. Pages are assembled from nested components with content policies, experience fragments, editable templates, and MSM (Multi-Site Manager) for multi-site governance.

AEM Edge Delivery Services replaces this entire architecture. Content lives in Google Docs, SharePoint, or DA — not JCR. Pages are documents where sections are separated by horizontal rules (`---`) and components are replaced by blocks (tables in the document). There is no server-side rendering, no component dialogs, and no MSM. This means migration is redesign, not lift-and-shift. Every component must be re-evaluated, server-side logic must move client-side, and URL structures often change because EDS enforces lowercase-only, numbers, and dashes.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a todo list to track progress through these steps. Update the status of each item as you complete it.

## Step 1: Inventory the Source AEM Site

Fetch the source site's homepage and 5-10 representative interior pages (across different templates — e.g., homepage, product page, blog post, landing page, contact page). For each page, catalog:

### Page Templates
- Identify distinct templates by examining layout patterns, header/footer variations, sidebar presence, and content zone structure.
- Note which templates are standard AEM Core Components templates vs. custom project templates.
- Count total unique templates — each will need an EDS document template equivalent.

### Components
- **Core Components** — teaser, carousel, accordion, tabs, image, text, list, navigation, breadcrumb, language navigation, search, embed, form container, experience fragment, content fragment list.
- **Custom Components** — project-specific components identified by custom class names, non-standard DOM structures, or component names referenced in page CSS/JS bundles.
- **Container Components** — layout containers, responsive grid, parsys. Note nesting depth. Nesting 3+ levels deep is a migration risk since EDS blocks cannot contain other blocks.
- **Content Fragments** — headless content referenced on the page. May need a different migration path (Universal Editor, Content Services API).
- **Experience Fragments** — shared content (headers, footers, modals, promotional banners). In EDS, these become fragment documents loaded via JavaScript.

## Step 2: Map Components to EDS Blocks

### Direct Mappings (Low Effort — No Block Needed)
- **Text** -> document paragraphs. **Image** -> document images (EDS auto-optimizes with `<picture>` and WebP). **Title** -> headings (H1-H6). **Button** -> links wrapped in `<strong>` (primary) or `<em>` (secondary). **Separator** -> horizontal rule (`---`). **Static List** -> bullet/numbered lists.

### Block Mappings (Medium Effort)
- **Teaser** -> Cards or Columns block. **Carousel** -> Carousel block (custom JS). **Accordion** -> Accordion block. **Tabs** -> Tabs block. **Embed** -> Embed block. **Navigation** -> Nav fragment document. **Breadcrumb** -> auto-generated or custom block.

### Gap Mappings (High Effort — Redesign Required)
- **Form Container** -> client-side form via form service API or third-party tool (no server-side form handling in EDS).
- **Content Fragment List** -> AEM Content Services API or Universal Editor integration.
- **Dynamic Lists** -> `query-index` with client-side JS. **Personalization** -> Adobe Target client-side SDK or EDS experimentation framework.
- **Search** -> client-side solution (Algolia, custom index, or query-index). **MSM live copies** -> separate EDS projects per locale.

### Unsupported Patterns (Blockers)
Flag: server-side Sling Models with business logic, OSGi services called by components, component dialogs with complex validation, nested container components (3+ levels deep).

## Step 3: Identify Server-Side Dependencies

Analyze the source site for server-side logic that has no equivalent in EDS:

### Sling Servlets and Services
- Look for AJAX calls to `.json` endpoints or custom Sling servlets in the page source JavaScript.
- Check for form submission endpoints (POST handlers) — these must move to external form services.
- Identify any Sling mappings or vanity URL configurations.

### Dispatcher and CDN
- EDS uses its own Fastly-based CDN. Custom Dispatcher rewrite rules, cache invalidation logic, and access control rules must be re-implemented as EDS redirects, edge functions, or CDN configuration.
- Document every custom Dispatcher rule — each needs a migration plan.

### Integrations
- **Analytics** — Adobe Analytics or GA tag managers load via `delayed.js` in EDS (3+ seconds after LCP to protect Core Web Vitals).
- **Personalization** — Adobe Target must use client-side SDK or EDS experimentation framework.
- **DAM** — images come from the content source (Google Drive, SharePoint, DA) in EDS, not AEM Assets.
- **Commerce** — CIF components must become client-side via storefront drop-in APIs.
- **Forms** — AEM Forms must be replaced with client-side form solutions (form service APIs, third-party tools).
- **Authentication** — gated content must move to client-side auth (IMS, Auth0, Okta, etc.).

## Step 4: Assess Content Volume and URL Compatibility

### Content Inventory
- Count total pages via sitemap (`/sitemap.xml`). Break down by template type.
- Categorize: **Static pages** (low effort), **Structured listings** (need `helix-query.yaml`), **Detail pages** (need templates + metadata), **Interactive pages** (highest effort — client-side rebuilds).
- Count images, PDFs, and videos. Images must be re-uploaded to the content source.

### URL Compatibility
EDS URLs only permit lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes. Flag all violations:
- Uppercase characters (`/About-Us` -> `/about-us`).
- Underscores (`/product_detail` -> `/product-detail`).
- File extensions (`/contact.html` -> `/contact`).
- CMS path prefixes (`/content/site/en/page` -> `/page`).
- Count total URLs requiring changes. The full mapping feeds into `redirect-migration`.

Classify every gap as: **Blocker** (cannot meet in EDS without fundamental change), **Workaround** (different implementation approach), or **Non-issue** (maps cleanly).

## Step 6: Generate Phased Migration Plan

**Phase 1 — Foundation (Weeks 1-4):** Set up EDS project (GitHub repo, content source, domain). Build core blocks (nav, footer, hero, cards/columns). Create document templates. Configure `helix-query.yaml`.

**Phase 2 — Content Migration (Weeks 4-8):** Migrate static pages first as proof of concept. Build remaining custom blocks. Migrate structured content using templates. Upload images. Configure bulk metadata spreadsheet.

**Phase 3 — Integration (Weeks 8-12):** Implement client-side integrations (analytics, forms, search, personalization). Build interactive blocks. Performance test against EDS benchmarks (LCP < 1.2s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200ms).

**Phase 4 — Cutover (Weeks 12-14):** Generate and validate redirects spreadsheet. Content freeze on source AEM site. DNS cutover to EDS CDN. Post-launch monitoring for 404s, redirect loops, performance regressions.

## Key Principles

1. **Migration is redesign, not lift-and-shift.** EDS has a fundamentally different content model. Every component must be re-evaluated, not copied.
2. **Content model first, visuals second.** Map how content structures in documents and blocks. Visual fidelity comes from CSS on a clean model.
3. **Server-side to client-side is the hardest shift.** Any feature relying on Sling, OSGi, or JCR at render time must be completely rethought.
4. **Authors are the primary users.** Migration succeeds when authors work effectively in Google Docs or SharePoint. Factor training into the plan.
5. **Phase the migration to reduce risk.** Migrate simple content first, prove the pattern, then tackle complex pages.
6. **Redirects are not optional.** Every changed URL needs a redirect. Plan this as a first-class workstream.
