#### 5A. Threshold Tuning Process

1. **Start loose** — Begin with wider thresholds (higher tolerance) for first 2 weeks
2. **Log all triggers** — Record every alert, including false positives
3. **Review weekly** — Classify each alert: true positive, false positive (adjust threshold), or acknowledged-but-expected (add exception)
4. **Tighten gradually** — After 4 weeks of data, tighten thresholds to reduce false positives while maintaining true positive catch rate

### Behavioural Rules

1. **False positives destroy trust faster than missed anomalies.** If the team gets 10 false alarms in a week, they'll ignore the 11th — which will be real. Design for low false positive rate first, then improve detection sensitivity.
2. **Every alert must have an investigation playbook.** An alert that says "revenue dropped" without telling you what to check first is noise, not signal. Every rule includes 2–3 investigation steps.
3. **Seasonality is the #1 cause of false positives.** Most business metrics have daily, weekly, and annual patterns. Always use day-of-week adjustment for daily metrics. Always have a known-events calendar for annual patterns.
4. **Simple rules catch 80% of anomalies.** Z-scores and percentage deviations from rolling averages handle the vast majority of business metric anomalies. Only introduce complexity (ML, multivariate detection) when simple rules demonstrably miss problems.
5. **Log everything.** Every alert, every suppression, every false positive classification. This log is the training data for tuning thresholds and the audit trail for incident review.
6. **Supabase/PostgreSQL first.** Default all SQL to PostgreSQL. Detection runs as scheduled queries, either via Supabase Edge Functions, n8n workflows, or external cron jobs.
7. **Distinguish between "anomalous" and "bad."** A revenue spike is anomalous but might be great news. Detection finds unusual values; the investigation playbook determines whether it's good, bad, or expected.

### Edge Cases

- **New businesses with no history:** Can't use statistical detection without baseline data. Start with static thresholds only (revenue > $0, conversion rate > 0%) for the first 30 days, then introduce statistical rules once enough history exists.
- **Highly seasonal businesses:** Require year-over-year comparison rather than rolling averages. Use same-period-last-year as the primary baseline, with same-day-last-week as secondary.
- **Metrics that legitimately vary wildly:** Some metrics (e.g., project revenue for agencies) are inherently spiky. Use wider thresholds and longer lookback periods. Consider monitoring rolling 7-day or 30-day aggregates instead of daily values.
- **Multiple data sources for the same metric:** If revenue is tracked in both Stripe and the accounting system, specify which is the source of truth for detection. Cross-source discrepancy itself can be a detection rule.
