# Aurora — The Dawn Tuner

> Aurora was the Roman goddess of the dawn — the one who arrives before everyone else is awake. In Homer, she runs before the user wakes up, mining last night's Brain telemetry and proposing weight adjustments for the next day.

## Role

Aurora is a sleep-time agent (L6). She reads Brain's `decisions.jsonl` and computes:
- Tier distribution (S0-S5 counts + percentages)
- Model recommendation distribution (haiku / sonnet / opus)
- Guardrail fire rates (which guardrails fire how often)
- Uncertainty escalation rate (% of prompts where classifier was unsure)
- Correction-detected rate (% of prompts flagged as corrections)
- Average classifier confidence

From those stats, Aurora generates **proposals** for `routing_manifest.toml` weight adjustments. **She never auto-applies.** Every proposal lands in a dated JSON file for the user's review.

## Proposal Rules (current ruleset)

| Signal | Threshold | Proposal |
|---|---|---|
| `uncertainty_escalated` firing > 40% | Medium severity | Raise `fail_open_tier` from S3 to S4 OR raise confidence threshold |
| `correction_detected` > 5% | High severity | Bump `correction_keywords` weight in `[signals]` |
| Any guardrail firing > 20% | Low severity | Review threshold — possibly over-sensitive |
| Any guardrail firing 0× over 100+ decisions | Low severity | Verify still needed or retire |
| `avg_confidence` < 0.5 | Medium severity | Review signal weights; may need recalibration |

Each proposal in the output JSON contains:
- `id` — unique identifier
- `rationale` — why Aurora proposes it
- `recommendation` — what to change
- `severity` — `high` / `medium` / `low`
- `evidence` — the raw numbers the proposal is based on

## Input

- **Primary:** `~/.claude/telemetry/brain/decisions.jsonl` (written by `brain_advisor.sh` UserPromptSubmit hook)
- **Secondary:** `~/.claude/telemetry/brain/advisor_calls.jsonl` (when it exists — written by `brain advise`)
- **Reference:** `Toke/automations/brain/routing_manifest.toml` (current weights)

## Output

`Toke/automations/homer/sleep/aurora/proposals/tuning_YYYY-MM-DD.json`

## When Aurora is useful

- **Nightly** — track classifier drift over time
- **Weekly** — after 50+ new decisions accumulate, proposals become statistically meaningful
- **After a correction loop** — if the user sees a streak of corrections, Aurora's next run will surface them
- **Before a Brain recalibration session** — Aurora's proposals are the starting point for manifest tuning

## Boundary Discipline

1. **Read-only** — Aurora never modifies `routing_manifest.toml` directly. She writes proposals; the user applies.
2. **Proposal-only output** — Sacred Rule #2 (no delete) + Rule #4 (only asked). Aurora does not self-modify Brain.
3. **Deterministic** — same `decisions.jsonl` state → same proposals. No stochastic analysis.
4. **Small-N warnings** — if total decisions < 10, Aurora's proposals are statistically weak. The output includes the sample size so the user can judge reliability.
5. **Empty-source safe** — if `decisions.jsonl` doesn't exist, Aurora returns `total=0` and no proposals.

## Integration with Brain

- **Reads Brain's output** — consumes `decisions.jsonl` that Brain writes via the UserPromptSubmit hook
- **Proposes changes to Brain's config** — doesn't directly modify, the user is the gate
- **Brain stays sovereign** — Aurora informs, Brain decides (via the user)

## Integration with Hesper + Nyx

- **Hesper** provides learning-distilled patterns that may inform Aurora's tuning (cross-reference, not programmatic)
- **Nyx** provides skill theater audit (orthogonal — Nyx audits SKILL.md files, Aurora audits routing weights)
- **Sleep CLI** dispatches all three via `sleep run all`

## Sacred Rules Active

All 13 rules. Rule 2 (no delete) and Rule 4 (only asked) are the load-bearing constraints for Aurora — she must never self-apply proposals. Rule 1 (truthful) means proposals cite their evidence; no hand-waving.

## Ship Status

- **P3 shipped 2026-04-11** — aurora.py + SKILL.md
- **Depends on** — Brain's `decisions.jsonl` being populated (currently 148+ entries live)
- **Output path** — `Toke/automations/homer/sleep/aurora/proposals/tuning_<date>.json`
