# kusto-query — Read-Only KQL Queries via Kusto MCP Server

> **Purpose**: Execute read-only KQL queries against Kusto / Azure Data Explorer clusters
> using the Kusto MCP server. This skill is **read-only** — it does not create, alter, or drop objects.

## Citation Links via Biome MCP

Use the `kusto_citation_url` MCP tool to generate clickable Azure Data Explorer links
for any KQL query. The tool handles URL encoding and returns a direct link to
`dataexplorer.azure.com` that opens the query in the ADX web UI.

## Connection

### Cluster URI

Each Kusto cluster or Fabric KQL Database has a unique Query URI:

### Using the Kusto MCP Server

Use the MCP server tools to execute queries. The MCP server handles authentication,
connection, and result formatting automatically.

The user may have different mcp servers installed to query kusto. If they have ms-fabric-rti, that server
exposes the `kusto_query` tool with the following parameters:

> **Finding the cluster URI:** Check workspace config files (e.g., `config/*.yaml`)
> for `plugins.kusto.url`. The DataRex catalog's `cluster_friendly_name` field is a
> human-readable label, not a URI.

## Agentic Exploration — "Chat With My Data"

When the user asks to explore or query a Kusto cluster without specifying tables, use the DataRex Search skill to discover relevant tables and schemas first, then generate queries based on that schema.


### Schema-Aware Query Generation

After schema discovery, generate queries using actual column names and types:

## Schema Discovery

The DataRex skill should also be able to provide you with the schema of tables in the Kusto cluster. You can use the following KQL commands to discover tables and their schemas:

Only if not available from that skill should you use kusto admin commands like `.show tables` and `.show table T schema as json`.

## Performance Best Practices

### Query Patterns

| Pattern | Why |

| **Always filter by time first** | `where Timestamp > ago(1h)` — enables extent pruning |
| **Use `has` over `contains`** | `has` uses term index (fast); `contains` does substring scan (slow) |
| **`project` early** | Drop unneeded columns early to reduce memory |
| **`summarize` with `bin()`** | Time bucketing enables efficient aggregation |
| **`take` for exploration** | Use `take 100` instead of full scans when exploring |
| **`materialize()` for reuse** | Cache sub-expression results used multiple times |
| **Avoid `*` in `project`** | Explicit column list prevents schema-change surprises |

### Anti-Patterns

| Anti-Pattern | Fix |

## Query Citations In Reports

When Kusto queries are used as evidence in reports, cite them inline where the claim appears.
Do not rely only on a separate query appendix.

### Inline Citation Contract

- Use inline markdown links in narrative text, callouts, and relevant table rows.
- In HTML reports, render citation links as `<a>` tags with `target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"`
  so queries open in a separate tab/window safely.
- Use the `kusto_citation_url` MCP tool to generate the ADX link — it handles URL encoding
  and multiline query normalization automatically.
- Use concise link labels near each claim, for example `source query`, `trend query`, or `breakdown query`.

### Required Metadata

- `query`: the executed KQL text
- `db`: target database name
- `cluster`: ADX cluster short name used in the URL path

## Must / Prefer / Avoid

### MUST

- **Always include time filters** — `where Timestamp > ago(...)` must be present on time-series tables.
- **Discover schema before querying** — run `.show tables` and `.show table T schema as json` first.
- **Use `has` for term search** — indexed and fast; only fall back to `contains` for substring needs.
- **Prefer narrow projections** — `| project col1, col2` over returning all columns.
- **Add `| take N`** to limit large result sets when exploring.

### PREFER

- **Kusto MCP server** for query execution in agent workflows.
- **`project` early** to drop unneeded columns before aggregation.
- **`materialize()`** when a sub-expression is used multiple times.
- **`take 100`** for initial exploration; avoid full table scans.
- **`render timechart`** for time-series; `render piechart` for distribution.

### AVOID

- **`contains`** on large tables — full scan, not indexed. Use `has` or `has_cs`.
- **`join`** without filtering both sides first — causes memory explosion.
- **`project *`** equivalent on wide tables — explicit column list only.
- **Missing `bin()`** in time-series `summarize` — produces one row per unique timestamp.
- **Management commands that mutate data** — this skill is read-only.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Empty results on valid table | Wrong database context | Check `database("CorrectDB").TableName` |
| Query timeout | No time filter, scanning too much data | Add `where Timestamp > ago(...)` to narrow scan |
| `Forbidden (403)` | Insufficient permissions | Request `viewer` role on the database |
| Results truncated | Default limit is 500K rows | Add `| take N` |
| `Partial query failure` | One or more extents failed | Retry; if persistent, check `.show database datastats` |
| `has` returns unexpected results | `has` matches whole terms, not substrings | Use `contains` for substring matching (slower) |
| `==` misses rows | `==` is case-sensitive for strings | Use `=~` for case-insensitive equality |
| `dcount()` returns approximate | HyperLogLog algorithm by design | Use `dcount(x, 4)` for higher accuracy or `T \| distinct Column \| count` for exact |
| Slow `contains` queries | Full-text scan, no index | Switch to `has` (term index) or `has_any()` |

### Retries

- On **transient errors** (timeouts, 429 rate limits, 500/502/503 server errors, `Partial query failure`): retry up to **3 times** with a brief pause between attempts.
- On **access/authorization errors** (401, 403, `Forbidden`): **do not retry**. Instead, tell the user they likely lack the required permissions and point them to the [access prerequisites](../../references/access-prerequisites.md) to request access to the Canopy Kusto cluster.
- On **other errors** (syntax errors, semantic errors, bad request): do not retry. Fix the query or parameters before re-attempting.
