# Block Accessibility Audit for AEM Edge Delivery Services

## Context

### How EDS Transforms Tables to Blocks

When an author creates a block in Google Docs, Word, or da.live, they create a table. The EDS pipeline transforms this into DOM as follows:

1. The table becomes a `<div class="{block-name}">` wrapper.
2. Each table row becomes a `<div>` child of the wrapper.
3. Each table cell becomes a `<div>` child of the row.
4. Content inside cells (paragraphs, headings, images, links) is preserved as-is.

This transformation means the block's initial DOM is a series of generic `<div>` elements with no semantic meaning. The `decorate()` function is responsible for adding semantic structure — converting `<div>` containers to `<ul>` lists, adding ARIA roles, setting up keyboard navigation, and restructuring content into accessible patterns.

### Why Block Accessibility Fails

The most common accessibility failures in EDS blocks are: (1) missing semantic restructuring — the `decorate()` function adds visual styling but does not convert the `<div>` soup into semantic HTML, (2) interactive blocks without ARIA — tabs, accordions, and carousels lack `role`, `aria-expanded`, `aria-selected`, and `aria-controls`, (3) no keyboard support — blocks respond to clicks but not Enter, Space, Escape, or arrow keys, (4) focus management failures — dynamic content does not receive focus or traps it incorrectly, and (5) author-supplied content gaps — missing alt text or ambiguous link text originating in the source document.

EDS blocks follow ARIA patterns that differ from generic web components because the DOM is generated from authored tables, not hardcoded templates. The `decorate()` function must dynamically apply ARIA attributes based on discovered content. A tabs block must count rows to determine tab count, then generate `aria-controls` IDs and cross-references dynamically.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a todo list to track progress through these steps:

- [ ] Fetch the page and identify all blocks
- [ ] Inventory each block's rendered DOM structure
- [ ] Audit semantic HTML and ARIA roles per block
- [ ] Test keyboard navigation patterns
- [ ] Check focus management on interactive blocks
- [ ] Audit color contrast within block contexts
- [ ] Check screen reader compatibility patterns
- [ ] Generate per-block accessibility fix report

## Step 1: Fetch Page and Identify Blocks

Fetch the published page and catalog every block on it:

1. **Fetch the published page** at the URL the user provides. Use the full rendered page, not `.plain.html`, because blocks are only decorated in the published version.
2. **Identify all blocks** by finding all elements with the class pattern `<div class="{block-name}-wrapper">` containing `<div class="{block-name}">`. The wrapper `<div>` is added by the EDS loader; the inner `<div>` is the block itself.
3. **List each block** with its name, variant classes (if any), position on the page (above or below fold), and whether it contains interactive elements.
4. **Categorize blocks** as:
   - **Static:** Display-only blocks with no interaction (hero, columns, cards without links). These need semantic structure and content accessibility.
   - **Interactive:** Blocks with click/keyboard behavior (tabs, accordion, carousel, modal, form). These need full ARIA and keyboard support.
   - **Navigation:** Blocks that serve as navigation (header, footer, breadcrumb, table of contents). These need landmark roles and skip links.

5. **Prioritize the audit order:** Interactive blocks first (highest risk), then navigation blocks, then static blocks.

## Step 2: Audit Semantic HTML Structure

For each block, examine whether the `decorate()` function produced meaningful semantic markup:

### List Patterns
- **Cards, grids, and collections** should use `<ul>` and `<li>` elements, not bare `<div>` elements. If a block renders a collection of items, each item should be a list item. Check for: `<div class="cards"><div><div>` — this should be `<ul role="list"><li>`.
- **Navigation lists** (link collections, menus) should use `<nav>` with `<ul>` / `<li>`.

### Content Sectioning
- **Blocks that represent distinct content sections** should use `<section>` with an `aria-labelledby` referencing the block's heading, or `<article>` for self-contained content units.
- **Blocks wrapping a single concept** (hero, banner, callout) should have an `aria-label` or `aria-labelledby` describing their purpose.

### Heading Levels
- **Blocks must not force heading levels.** If the `decorate()` function replaces or wraps headings, it must preserve the author's heading level. A block that converts all headings to `<h2>` breaks the page heading hierarchy.
- **Check heading continuity.** The headings inside blocks must fit logically into the page's overall heading structure. An H4 inside a block that follows an H2 on the page skips a level.

### Table Markup
- **Data blocks that display tabular information** should use `<table>`, `<thead>`, `<tbody>`, `<th>`, and `<td>` — not a visual grid of `<div>` elements. If the block's purpose is to display data in rows and columns, it must use real table markup with `scope` attributes on headers.

## Step 3: Audit ARIA Roles and Properties

For each interactive block, verify the correct ARIA pattern is implemented:

## Step 4: Keyboard Navigation Audit

Test keyboard access for every interactive block:

### Universal Requirements
- **Tab key** moves focus to the next interactive element in DOM order. Verify no elements are skipped and no non-interactive elements receive focus.
- **Shift+Tab** moves focus backward. Verify it works correctly through the block.
- **Focus indicator** is visible on every focused element. Check for `:focus-visible` styles. If the block uses `outline: none` without a replacement focus style, flag as P0.

### Block-Specific Keyboard Patterns

**Tabs:**
- Tab key moves focus into the tab list, then to the tab panel content.
- Left/Right arrow keys move between tabs within the tablist.
- Home/End keys move to first/last tab.
- Space/Enter activates the focused tab.

**Accordion:**
- Enter/Space toggles the focused accordion trigger.
- Up/Down arrow keys move between accordion triggers (optional but recommended).
- Home/End keys move to first/last trigger (optional).

**Carousel:**
- Left/Right arrow keys navigate between slides.
- Tab key moves through interactive content within the current slide, then to carousel controls.
- Enter/Space activates previous/next buttons and dot indicators.
- If auto-advancing, any keyboard interaction pauses the rotation.

**Modal/Dialog:**
- Tab cycles through focusable elements within the dialog only.
- Shift+Tab cycles backward within the dialog.
- Escape closes the dialog.
- Focus moves to the dialog on open and returns to the trigger on close.

Document every keyboard failure with the exact keys that fail and the expected behavior.

## Step 5: Focus Management Audit

Verify focus is managed correctly when content changes dynamically:

1. **New content appearing.** When an accordion panel expands, a tab panel becomes visible, or a carousel slide changes, does focus move to the new content? For tabs and accordions, focus should move to the panel content. For carousels, focus should remain on the control that was activated.
2. **Content disappearing.** When a panel collapses or a modal closes, does focus return to a logical location? It should return to the trigger element. If focus is lost (moves to `<body>`), flag as P0.
3. **Focus trapping.** In modals and dialogs, Tab and Shift+Tab must cycle within the dialog boundaries. Focus escaping to background content is P0.
4. **Skip links.** If the block is complex (many interactive elements), does it provide a mechanism to skip past it? This is important for blocks early on the page.
5. **Dynamic content updates.** If the block updates content without user interaction (live data, auto-advancing carousel), is `aria-live` used to announce changes to screen readers? Auto-advancing content that is not announced is P1.

## Step 6: Color Contrast Audit in Block Context

Check color contrast within the block's rendered context:

1. **Extract foreground/background color pairs** from the block's CSS. Check the block's own styles and any CSS custom properties it references.
2. **WCAG AA thresholds:** Normal text (under 18px or under 14px bold) needs 4.5:1 contrast ratio. Large text (18px+ or 14px+ bold) needs 3:1. Non-text elements (icons, borders, focus indicators) need 3:1.
3. **Block variants.** If the block has variants (e.g., a dark background variant), check each variant separately. A block that passes contrast in its default state but fails in a variant is still non-compliant.
4. **Hover and focus states.** Check contrast ratios for hover styles, active styles, and focus indicators — not just the default state.
5. **Images with text overlay.** If the block places text over images (hero blocks, banner blocks), there must be a text-shadow, background overlay, or other mechanism ensuring text remains readable regardless of image content. Flag text-on-image without contrast protection as P1.
6. **Disabled states.** If the block has disabled elements (buttons, inputs), WCAG does not require contrast compliance on disabled elements, but the disabled state must be conveyed programmatically (not just visually).

## Step 7: Screen Reader Compatibility

Evaluate how the block's content will be announced by screen readers:

1. **Reading order.** Verify the DOM order matches the visual order. CSS Grid and Flexbox can reorder elements visually while the DOM order (and screen reader reading order) remains different. If the block uses `order`, `grid-row`, or `flex-direction: row-reverse`, check that the DOM order still makes sense.
2. **Hidden content.** Elements hidden with `display: none` or the `hidden` attribute are correctly hidden from screen readers. Elements hidden with `opacity: 0`, `position: absolute; left: -9999px`, or `clip-path` may still be read. Verify hidden content is truly hidden using the correct method.
3. **Decorative elements.** Images, icons, and separators that are purely decorative must have `alt=""` (empty alt, not missing alt) or `aria-hidden="true"`. Missing alt on decorative images causes screen readers to announce the filename.
4. **Link and button labels.** If a block creates icon-only buttons or image links, they must have `aria-label` or visually hidden text providing the label. An `<a>` wrapping only an `<img>` needs descriptive text.
5. **Live regions.** Content that updates dynamically (carousels, loading indicators, error messages) must use `aria-live` with the appropriate politeness (`polite` for non-urgent, `assertive` for errors).
6. **Form controls.** If the block contains form elements, each input must have a visible `<label>` associated via `for`/`id` or wrapping, or an `aria-label`/`aria-labelledby`.

## Step 8: Generate Per-Block Fix Report

For each block audited, produce a standalone report:

1. **Total blocks audited:** N
2. **Blocks passing:** N (no P0 or P1 issues)
3. **Blocks failing:** N (with P0 or P1 issues)
4. **Total findings:** N (broken down by severity)
5. **Top 3 systemic issues** that appear across multiple blocks.
6. **Estimated remediation effort:** Hours for P0 fixes, hours for P1 fixes.

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **The table-to-block transformation creates accessibility debt.** The initial DOM is generic `<div>` elements. The `decorate()` function must pay down this debt by adding semantic HTML and ARIA. A block that only adds visual styling is inaccessible by default.
2. **Interactive blocks need the full ARIA pattern, not fragments.** A tabs block with `role="tab"` but missing `aria-controls` and `aria-selected` is worse than no ARIA at all — it sets incorrect expectations for assistive technology users.
3. **Keyboard access is as important as visual access.** Every action achievable by mouse must be achievable by keyboard. No exceptions for "edge case" interactions.
4. **Test with real assistive technology.** Automated tools catch about 30% of accessibility issues. The other 70% require manual testing with VoiceOver (macOS/iOS), NVDA (Windows), or TalkBack (Android).
5. **Content authors share responsibility.** Missing alt text, ambiguous link text, and improper heading levels originate in the authored document. The fix report must separate author-level fixes from developer-level fixes.
6. **Accessibility improves usability for everyone.** Keyboard navigation helps power users. Focus indicators help users with temporary impairments. Heading structure helps all users scan content.
