# Block Migration for AEM Edge Delivery Services

Analyze a custom AEM Edge Delivery Services block's full dependency tree — JavaScript imports, CSS custom properties, shared utility functions, and external resources — and produce a migration package that can be cleanly integrated into a target EDS project. Identifies project-specific assumptions that will break in the new context and generates step-by-step integration instructions.

## Context

### EDS Project Structure

Every EDS project follows a standard structure. The files relevant to block migration are:

- `blocks/{name}/{name}.js` and `blocks/{name}/{name}.css` — the block itself.
- `scripts/aem.js` — EDS core library providing `createOptimizedPicture`, `loadBlock`, `decorateBlocks`, `loadCSS`, and other utilities. This file is identical across projects unless customized.
- `scripts/scripts.js` — project-specific orchestration including `loadEager`, `loadLazy`, `loadDelayed`, auto-blocking configuration, and custom decoration logic. This file varies significantly between projects.
- `styles/styles.css` — project-level CSS custom properties (colors, fonts, spacing), base typography, and default content styles. Every project has different values here.
- `head.html` — custom `<head>` content (favicons, third-party snippets, schema markup). Rarely affects blocks directly but can introduce global styles.

### Why Blocks Are Not Portable by Default

A block that works in Project A may break in Project B for several reasons:

1. **CSS custom property dependencies.** The block's CSS references `var(--color-primary)`, but Project B uses `var(--brand-primary)` or has different color values entirely.
2. **Utility function imports.** The block imports a helper from `../../scripts/utils.js` that does not exist in Project B.
3. **Auto-blocking assumptions.** The block relies on `buildAutoBlocks()` in `scripts.js` to wrap certain URLs, but Project B does not have this auto-blocking rule.
4. **Shared block dependencies.** The block uses markup patterns from another block (e.g., it expects a `columns` block to exist with specific behavior).
5. **Content structure assumptions.** The block expects specific heading levels, image formats, or link patterns that differ between projects.

### Migration vs. Rewrite

Not every block should be migrated. If the block has heavy project-specific logic (more than 30% of the code references project-specific utilities or patterns), a rewrite using `block-scaffolder` may be faster and cleaner than adapting the existing code.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a todo list to track progress through these steps:

- [ ] Inventory all block files in the source project
- [ ] Analyze JavaScript dependencies
- [ ] Analyze CSS variable dependencies
- [ ] Check for project-specific references and assumptions
- [ ] Assess migration viability (migrate vs. rewrite)
- [ ] Generate the migration package
- [ ] Generate integration instructions for the target project
- [ ] Produce a validation checklist

## Step 1: Inventory Block Files

Identify every file that belongs to the block in the source project:

1. **Core files:** `blocks/{name}/{name}.js` and `blocks/{name}/{name}.css`. Read both completely.
2. **Supporting files:** Check the block directory for additional files — icons (`.svg`), helper modules (`.js`), sub-stylesheets, or data files (`.json`). List all of them.
3. **Shared dependencies:** Search the JS file for all `import` statements. For each import, determine if the target is: (a) the EDS core library (`aem.js`), (b) a project-specific utility, or (c) a third-party module.
4. **Read each dependency file.** For project-specific utilities, read the file and assess whether it can be migrated alongside the block or must be replicated in the target project.
5. **Document the full file list** with paths and a one-line description of each file's role.

## Step 2: Analyze JavaScript Dependencies

For each `import` statement in the block's JS file:

### EDS Core Imports (`aem.js`)
- `createOptimizedPicture` — standard, available in all projects. No action needed.
- `loadCSS` — standard. No action needed.
- `decorateIcons` — standard, but some projects override this. Note for verification.
- `fetchPlaceholders` — standard, but placeholder values differ per project. Note the specific placeholder keys the block uses.
- Custom additions to `aem.js` — some projects extend the core library. If the block imports a function that is not in the standard `aem.js`, flag it as a migration dependency.

### Project-Specific Imports
For each import from `scripts/scripts.js`, `scripts/utils.js`, or any non-standard path:
1. **Read the imported function.** Determine its purpose and complexity.
2. **Classify it:** Is it a generic utility (could exist in any project) or project-specific logic (references project URLs, brand values, or content structures)?
3. **Determine the migration strategy:** (a) copy the utility into the target project, (b) replace it with an equivalent in the target project, or (c) inline the logic into the block.

### External Dependencies
If the block loads scripts from CDNs or external URLs:
1. **Flag as a risk.** External dependencies add latency and a point of failure.
2. **Check if the dependency is available as an npm package** that could be bundled.
3. **Verify the external URL is accessible** from the target project's domain (CORS, CSP).

## Step 3: Analyze CSS Variable Dependencies

Extract every CSS custom property referenced in the block's CSS:

1. **List all `var(--...)` references.** For each one, identify whether it is defined in the source project's `styles/styles.css` or in the block's own CSS.
2. **Categorize each variable:**
   - **Color variables:** `--color-primary`, `--color-background`, `--color-text`, etc.
   - **Typography variables:** `--font-family-body`, `--font-family-heading`, `--font-size-m`, etc.
   - **Spacing variables:** `--spacing-s`, `--spacing-m`, `--spacing-l`, etc.
   - **Layout variables:** `--max-width`, `--section-width`, `--nav-height`, etc.
3. **Map to target project equivalents.** If the user has provided the target project's `styles/styles.css`, map each source variable to its target equivalent. If no equivalent exists, note the variable and its value so it can be added.
4. **Check for hardcoded values.** If the CSS uses hardcoded colors or sizes instead of custom properties, note these as migration improvements — they should be converted to variables in the target project.

## Step 4: Check for Project-Specific References

Search the block code for assumptions that are specific to the source project:

### URL and Path References
- **Hardcoded domains:** Search for the source project's domain (e.g., `example.com`). These must be replaced or parameterized.
- **Hardcoded paths:** Search for absolute paths like `/content/`, `/fragments/`, or specific page paths. These may not exist in the target project.
- **Asset paths:** Image URLs, icon paths, or font references that are project-specific.

### Content Structure Assumptions
- **Specific heading levels:** Does the block assume all its content starts with an H2? The target project may use different conventions.
- **Image dimensions:** Does the block assume specific aspect ratios or sizes?
- **Link patterns:** Does the block expect links in a specific format (e.g., PDF links, email links)?

### Auto-Blocking Dependencies
- **Does the block rely on auto-blocking?** Check `scripts/scripts.js` in the source project for `buildAutoBlocks()` rules that create this block. If so, the target project needs the same auto-blocking rule.

### Shared Block Dependencies
- **Does the block reference other blocks?** Some blocks use shared infrastructure — for example, a `cards` block that relies on `columns` block CSS for its grid layout. Identify any cross-block dependencies.

## Step 5: Assess Migration Viability

Based on the analysis in Steps 1-4, make a recommendation:

**Recommendation thresholds:**
- **Migrate:** Total dependency score under 8, project-specific code under 20%. Copy files and adapt.
- **Migrate with modifications:** Score 8-15 or project-specific code 20-40%. Copy and significantly refactor.
- **Rewrite:** Score above 15 or project-specific code above 40%. Use `block-scaffolder` to create a new block inspired by the source.

State the recommendation clearly before proceeding to the next step.

## Step 6: Generate Migration Package

Produce the complete set of files needed for migration:

1. **Block files:** The JS and CSS files with all required modifications applied — variable names swapped, imports updated, project-specific code replaced.
2. **Dependency files:** Any utility functions or helper modules that must be copied to the target project. Include clear file paths for where they should be placed.
3. **CSS variable additions:** A snippet to add to the target project's `styles/styles.css` for any missing custom properties, with the values from the source project as defaults.
4. **Auto-blocking rules:** If applicable, the code to add to the target project's `scripts/scripts.js` `buildAutoBlocks()` function.
5. **Migration manifest:** A JSON-formatted list of every file in the package with its source path, target path, and a description of changes made.

## Step 7: Generate Integration Instructions

Produce step-by-step instructions for integrating the migration package into the target project:

1. **Copy block files** to `blocks/{name}/` in the target project.
2. **Copy dependency files** to their respective paths (if any).
3. **Update `styles/styles.css`** with missing CSS custom properties.
4. **Update `scripts/scripts.js`** with auto-blocking rules (if any).
5. **Test the block** by creating a test document in Google Docs or Word with the authoring table. Provide the exact table structure.
6. **Preview the page** to verify the block renders correctly.
7. **Run `block-testing`** to validate the migrated block against the testing checklist.
8. **Check CSS isolation** by verifying default content around the block is unaffected.

Include specific commands or actions for each step. Do not use vague instructions like "update as needed."

## Step 8: Produce Validation Checklist

Generate a checklist for the developer to verify after migration:

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |

## Key Principles

1. **Inventory before you copy.** Never copy block files without first analyzing every dependency. A block that "mostly works" with hidden failures is worse than one that fails obviously.
2. **Map, don't assume.** CSS custom property names are conventions, not standards. `--color-primary` in Project A may be `--brand-main` in Project B. Always map explicitly.
3. **Prefer adaptation over duplication.** If the target project has an equivalent utility function, use it rather than copying the source project's version. Duplicated utilities diverge over time.
4. **Migration is not a one-way copy.** After migrating, the block belongs to the target project. It should follow the target project's conventions, not retain the source project's patterns.
5. **Test with target content, not source content.** The block must work with the content structure, image sizes, and text lengths typical of the target project — not just the source project's examples.
6. **Document what changed.** The migration manifest is not optional. Future developers need to understand what was adapted and why.
