# Block Scaffolder for AEM Edge Delivery Services

## Context

### EDS Block Architecture

In AEM Edge Delivery Services, a block is a reusable content component authored as a table in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or da.live. The first row of the table contains the block name (e.g., "Cards" or "Hero"). Subsequent rows contain the block's content — text, images, links — one logical item per row. When the page is delivered, the EDS pipeline transforms each table into a `<div>` with a class matching the block name, and each row becomes a child `<div>`.

Every block lives in the `/blocks/` directory of the EDS project. A block named `my-block` has exactly two files: `blocks/my-block/my-block.js` and `blocks/my-block/my-block.css`. The JS file exports a single `decorate(block)` function that receives the block's root `<div>` element after the table-to-DOM transformation. The CSS file contains styles scoped to `.my-block` to avoid leaking into other blocks or default content.

### Block Variants

A block can have variants specified in the table header: "Cards (highlight)" produces a `<div class="cards highlight">`. Variants allow a single block to support multiple visual treatments without separate JS/CSS files. The `decorate()` function can check `block.classList.contains('highlight')` to branch behavior.

### Auto-Blocking

EDS supports auto-blocking, where certain URL patterns are automatically wrapped in blocks. For example, a YouTube link can be auto-blocked into a `youtube` embed block. This is configured in `scripts.js` via the `buildAutoBlocks()` function. Not all blocks need auto-blocking, but the scaffolder should note when it would be appropriate.

### Block Collection Reference

Adobe maintains a reference collection of standard blocks at `https://www.aem.live/developer/block-collection`. This includes cards, columns, hero, accordion, tabs, carousel, and more. Before creating a custom block, check whether a standard block already covers the need.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a todo list to track progress through these steps:

- [ ] Clarify requirements and check for existing standard blocks
- [ ] Determine block name and variant strategy
- [ ] Generate the JavaScript file with decorate() function
- [ ] Generate the scoped CSS file
- [ ] Generate example document markup (authoring table)
- [ ] Generate a test page
- [ ] Produce a validation checklist

## Step 1: Understand Requirements

Gather and clarify the block requirements from the user's description:

1. **What does the block display?** Identify the visual output — a grid of cards, a hero banner, an accordion, a data table, etc.
2. **What content does the author provide?** List each content field — image, heading, description, link, icon, etc. Determine which fields are required vs. optional.
3. **Does a standard block already exist?** Check the block collection at `https://www.aem.live/developer/block-collection`. If a standard block covers the use case, recommend it and explain how to customize with variants or CSS overrides rather than building from scratch.
4. **Does the block need variants?** Determine if the block needs multiple visual treatments (e.g., `cards`, `cards (highlight)`, `cards (compact)`).
5. **Does the block need interactivity?** Identify any JavaScript behavior — accordions expand/collapse, tabs switch panels, carousels rotate. Note which events are needed.
6. **What is the expected content volume?** A block with 3 items behaves differently than one with 50. Clarify the typical and maximum item count.

If any of these are ambiguous, ask the user before proceeding.

## Step 2: Determine Block Name and Structure

Apply EDS naming conventions:

1. **Name:** All lowercase, hyphenated, descriptive. Good: `feature-cards`, `pricing-table`, `team-roster`. Bad: `myBlock`, `Component1`, `featured_cards`.
2. **File paths:** `blocks/{block-name}/{block-name}.js` and `blocks/{block-name}/{block-name}.css`.
3. **Simple vs. compound:** A simple block has one content item per row. A compound block has multiple related fields per row, arranged in columns. For compound blocks, each column in the authoring table maps to a child `<div>` inside the row `<div>`.
4. **Variant strategy:** Define variant names (lowercase, single word preferred). Document what each variant changes. Example: `highlight` adds a colored background; `compact` reduces padding and font size.

State the chosen block name, file paths, structure type (simple/compound), and any variants before generating code.

## Step 3: Generate JavaScript File

Create `blocks/{block-name}/{block-name}.js` with the following structure:

Follow these rules strictly:

1. **Export a default `decorate` function** that receives the `block` element. This is the only required export.
2. **Do not import EDS core modules unless needed.** Common imports include `createOptimizedPicture` from `../../scripts/aem.js` for responsive images, and `loadCSS` for lazy-loaded stylesheets.
3. **Work with the existing DOM.** The block element already contains `<div>` children from the table transformation. Restructure them as needed, but avoid destroying and rebuilding the entire subtree — that causes flash of unstyled content.
4. **Add ARIA attributes** for any interactive elements. Accordions need `role="region"`, `aria-expanded`, and `aria-controls`. Tabs need `role="tablist"`, `role="tab"`, `role="tabpanel"`. Carousels need `aria-live="polite"` and `aria-roledescription`.
5. **Null-check content.** Authors may leave cells empty. Guard against `null` or empty children: `const heading = row.querySelector('h2, h3, h4'); if (heading) { ... }`.
6. **Handle images with `createOptimizedPicture`.** Replace authored `<img>` tags with responsive `<picture>` elements: `const pic = createOptimizedPicture(img.src, img.alt, isLCP, [{ width: '750' }]);`
7. **Use `requestAnimationFrame` for DOM batch writes** when manipulating multiple elements to avoid layout thrashing.
8. **Add event listeners for interactivity** using delegation on the block element rather than individual child listeners when possible.
9. **Mark the first block instance on the page as LCP-eligible** if it is typically above the fold.

Generate the complete JS file with inline comments explaining each section.

## Step 4: Generate CSS File

Create `blocks/{block-name}/{block-name}.css` with scoped styles:

1. **Scope every rule** under `.{block-name}`. Never use bare element selectors — `.cards p` not `p`.
2. **Use CSS custom properties** from the project's `styles/styles.css` for colors, fonts, and spacing. Reference common variables: `var(--color-primary)`, `var(--font-family-heading)`, `var(--spacing-m)`. If the block needs unique custom properties, define them on the `.{block-name}` selector.
3. **Include a mobile breakpoint** at `@media (min-width: 900px)` — this is the standard EDS desktop breakpoint. Design mobile-first: base styles are mobile, the media query adds desktop layout.
4. **Use CSS Grid or Flexbox** for layout. EDS blocks commonly use CSS Grid for card grids and Flexbox for horizontal arrangements.
5. **Keep the CSS under 80 lines.** If the CSS grows beyond this, consider whether the block is doing too much and should be split.
6. **Include focus-visible styles** for any interactive elements: `:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid var(--color-primary); outline-offset: 2px; }`.
7. **Add transition properties** for hover/active states, but keep them under 200ms to avoid feeling sluggish.

Generate the complete CSS file with comments grouping sections (layout, typography, interactive states, responsive).

## Step 5: Generate Example Document Markup

Create the authoring table as it would appear in Google Docs or Word. Present it as a markdown table (the user can translate this to their authoring tool):

1. **First row** is the block name and optional variant: `| Cards (highlight) |`
2. **Subsequent rows** contain content. For compound blocks, show multiple columns.
3. **Include 2-3 example rows** with realistic placeholder content — real-sounding headings, plausible descriptions, example image references.
4. **Show optional fields** with a note that they can be left empty.
5. **Add authoring notes** below the table explaining what each row/column expects.
6. **Explain the DOM mapping.** Show how each table cell maps to a `<div>` in the rendered DOM so the developer understands the relationship between the authoring table and the block element they receive in `decorate()`.

Example format for a compound block:

For simple blocks with a single column, each row becomes a single child `<div>` with a single `<div>` inside it.

## Step 6: Generate Test Page

Create a minimal EDS-compatible test page at `tests/blocks/{block-name}.html` or describe how to create a test document in Google Docs:

1. **Include the block table** with multiple content variations: minimum content (only required fields), maximum content (all fields populated), edge cases (long text, missing images, many items).
2. **Include a section break** (horizontal rule) before and after the block to verify it behaves correctly in a multi-section layout.
3. **Add default content** (headings, paragraphs) around the block to verify CSS scoping does not leak.
4. **Test all variants** — include one instance of each variant so they can be compared side by side.
5. **Document manual test scenarios:** check on mobile viewport, verify keyboard navigation, test with a screen reader, confirm images load as optimized `<picture>` elements.

## Step 7: Produce Validation Checklist

Generate a final checklist the developer should verify before merging the block:

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **Start with the standard block collection.** Never build a custom block when a standard one can be configured with a variant or CSS override. Check `aem.live/developer/block-collection` first.
2. **Author-first design.** The authoring table must be intuitive for non-technical content authors. If the table is confusing, the block design is wrong — simplify it.
3. **CSS scoping is non-negotiable.** Every CSS rule must be scoped to the block class. Leaking styles is the most common block bug and the hardest to debug.
4. **Null-safe by default.** Authors will leave cells empty, misspell links, and put images where text should go. The `decorate()` function must handle all of this gracefully.
5. **Accessibility from the start.** ARIA roles, keyboard navigation, and focus management are not afterthoughts — include them in the initial scaffold.
6. **Keep it small.** A well-designed block is under 80 lines of JS and 80 lines of CSS. If it is larger, it is probably doing too much — split it into two blocks or use variants.
