# Book Summary

## When to Use

Use this skill when a learner or reader needs a structured, analytical distillation of a book's intellectual contribution -- not a plot recap, not a review, not a reading journal.

**Trigger scenarios:**

- A learner has just finished a non-fiction book and wants to consolidate what they read into a permanent, retrievable reference document
- A professional needs to synthesize a book's core argument quickly because they must apply it to a project, presentation, or decision
- A student is building a personal knowledge base across multiple books and needs each one summarized in a consistent, comparable format
- A reader partially absorbed a book and needs help reconstructing the argument from memory, notes, or highlights before the content fades
- Someone is preparing to discuss a book in a seminar, book club, or interview and needs a structured analytical framework to organize their thinking
- A learner wants to evaluate whether a book's arguments hold up against their own knowledge before deciding how much weight to give them
- A reader wants to identify specifically how they will apply what they learned -- not just what they read

**Do NOT use when:**

- The user needs to survey and compare multiple books on a topic (use `literature-search` -- that skill handles cross-source synthesis and academic citation frameworks)

## Process

### Step 1: Gather Source Material and Reader Context

Before producing anything, establish what the reader actually has access to and what they need from this summary.

- Ask whether the reader has finished the book, partially read it, or is working from highlights and notes -- this changes what can be reconstructed accurately
- Confirm the book's title, author, and publication year -- this matters for contextualizing the argument (a 2003 book on machine learning is making different claims than a 2023 book)
- Identify the reader's purpose: is this for personal reference, academic work, professional application, or discussion preparation? Each purpose changes which sections to emphasize
- Ask whether the reader has any source material to share: highlights, chapter notes, dog-eared passages, Kindle exports, or margin annotations -- richer summaries come from richer inputs
- If the reader provides no source material and is working purely from memory, note this in the summary header so the document is understood to be a memory reconstruction, not a text-faithful summary
- Establish the reader's familiarity with the book's domain -- a molecular biologist summarizing a genetics book needs different framing than a general reader doing the same

### Step 2: Extract the Author's Central Thesis

This is the single most important step and the one most commonly botched. A thesis is not a topic and not a description.

- The thesis must be a falsifiable or at least contestable claim -- "This book is about leadership" is a topic; "Collins argues that the distinguishing factor between merely good companies and great ones is the prior presence of a specific personality type in the CEO role" is a thesis
- Test the extracted thesis by asking: could someone reasonably disagree with this? If no, it is a description, not an argument
- For books that resist a single thesis (essay collections, books structured as case studies, books with multiple parallel arguments), identify the organizing principle instead -- the through-line that connects all chapters
- Many authors state their thesis explicitly in the preface, introduction, or final chapter -- look there first before inferring it from body content
- If the reader cannot articulate the thesis in one to two sentences, this is a signal the book either lacks argumentative discipline or was not fully absorbed -- flag this and help the reader reconstruct it from what they do recall
- Distinguish between the author's stated thesis (what they say they are arguing) and their demonstrated thesis (what the evidence in the book actually supports) -- these sometimes diverge, and noting the gap is analytically valuable

### Step 3: Identify and Articulate 3-5 Key Ideas

Each key idea is a substantive claim the book makes in support of the thesis -- not a chapter heading, not a topic, not a definition.

- Aim for 3 ideas minimum (fewer suggests insufficient engagement with the text), 5 maximum for summary purposes (more suggests insufficient synthesis -- you are now listing rather than abstracting)
- Each idea needs: a descriptive title, a 2-3 sentence explanation in the reader's own words, and at least one specific piece of supporting evidence the author uses (a study cited, a case described, an argument made)
- Force ranking the ideas by importance is a useful discipline: which single idea, if removed, would collapse the book's argument? That is the most central idea and should appear first
- Distinguish between foundational ideas (the book's premises -- what must be true for the argument to work) and derived ideas (conclusions the author draws from those premises)
- When a book uses research citations as evidence, note whether the evidence is primary (the author conducted the research) or secondary (the author is citing others' research) -- this affects how much evidential weight to assign
- Watch for ideas the author treats as obvious but that are actually contestable assumptions -- these are often the most intellectually interesting parts of a book to surface

### Step 4: Select and Annotate 3-5 Notable Quotes

Quotes serve as anchors -- they preserve the author's exact voice and prevent the summary from drifting into the reader's paraphrase of a paraphrase.

- Select quotes that do one of three things: express the thesis with precision, illustrate a key idea in the author's own formulation, or contain a phrase so memorable it functions as a mental shortcut to the idea
- Every quote must be followed by an annotation: what does this quote mean in context, and why does it matter to the book's argument? A quote without annotation is noise
- Include page numbers when available -- this makes the summary function as a research reference, not just a study aid
- Avoid selecting quotes that are vivid but peripheral -- anecdotes and stories can produce quotable sentences that do not actually advance the core argument
- When the reader is working from memory or a non-paginated source (audiobook, e-book without page numbers), use chapter references instead: (Ch. 4)
- A quote that requires extensive unpacking to be useful is a warning sign that it is not actually the most efficient vehicle for capturing that idea -- in that case, paraphrase instead and keep the quote as a supporting footnote

### Step 5: Evaluate the Author's Methodology and Evidence Quality

This is what separates an analytical summary from a descriptive summary. The reader should know not just what the author argued but how well-supported the argument is.

- Identify the author's primary mode of argument: empirical (research studies, data), narrative (case studies, stories), logical (deductive reasoning from premises), or authority (credentials, expert testimony) -- most books use combinations of these
- For empirical arguments: note sample sizes, whether findings have been replicated, and whether the studies are correlational or causal -- non-fiction authors frequently overstate causation from correlational evidence
- For narrative arguments: assess the representativeness of the cases chosen -- authors systematically over-select memorable outlier cases (survivorship bias is the most common structural flaw in business books)
- For logical arguments: test whether the premises are actually established or merely asserted -- if a foundational premise is assumed without justification, the entire argument is weaker than it appears
- Rate evidence quality on a simple three-level scale: Strong (multiple independent lines of evidence converging on the same conclusion), Moderate (one strong study or several weak ones), Weak (anecdotal or untested assertion presented as fact)
- Note at least one significant omission or limitation: what counterevidence did the author not address, what alternative explanations were not considered?

### Step 6: Map Connections to Other Works and Ideas

A book understood in isolation is half-understood. Situate the book within its intellectual landscape.

- Identify at least one book or theory the author explicitly agrees with or builds upon -- this tells the reader where this book fits in a conversation
- Identify at least one book or position the author is arguing against (explicitly or implicitly) -- almost every argumentative book is a response to an existing view
- Note where the book's argument would be strengthened or challenged by knowledge from adjacent fields -- a business strategy book might be reinforced or contradicted by behavioral economics research, for example
- If the reader is building a reading list, identify whether this book is foundational (a primary text the reader should start with), derivative (builds on foundational work and benefits from reading the foundational text first), or applied (takes established theory and demonstrates practical application)
- Flag books with outdated empirical foundations -- publication date alone does not determine obsolescence, but books making specific empirical claims should be checked against whether the underlying evidence has since been updated or contradicted

### Step 7: Write Specific Application Notes

The application section is where the summary transitions from analytical to personal -- it must be specific to the reader's actual context.

- Ask the reader: what domain of their life or work does this book most directly speak to? The application notes must be written in that domain's language, not the book's language
- Each application note should follow the structure: [Specific idea] applied to [specific context] means [specific behavior change or decision]
- Avoid generic applications like "I will be more mindful of this" -- these are commitments to nothing. A testable application note looks like: "Collins's flywheel concept means I should stop launching new initiatives until I have completed 12 consecutive weeks of sustained effort on the current one"
- Include at least one application note that is actionable within the next 7 days -- distant intentions dissipate; near-term actions embed learning
- If the book suggests a tool, framework, or practice, the application note should specify how and when the reader will use it, not just that they intend to
- Note explicitly where you disagree with the author and how that disagreement affects your application -- partial acceptance is intellectually more rigorous than wholesale adoption

### Step 8: Produce the Final Summary and Self-Check

Assemble the complete summary document and run the reader through a brief verification.

- Produce the full summary following the output format below -- do not leave any section as a placeholder
- The summary should be long enough to be substantive and short enough to be read in under 10 minutes -- typically 600-1000 words of body content, excluding quote blocks
- Run the self-check: ask the reader to state the thesis aloud without looking at the document, then ask them to give one application example from memory. If they cannot, identify which step needs reinforcement
- Recommend a review schedule using spaced repetition intervals: re-read the summary at Day 1, Day 4, Day 12, and Day 30 after completing it
- Suggest the next processing step based on purpose: for academic use, suggest building toward an annotated bibliography entry; for memorization, suggest feeding key ideas into `flashcard-generation`; for writing, suggest using this summary as a source in a structured argument

## Rules

1. **The thesis must be a claim, not a description.** Never write "This book is about X." Write "The author argues that X because Y." If the reader cannot articulate a thesis, help them reconstruct one from the key ideas before proceeding -- a summary without a thesis is just a list.

2. **Key ideas have a hard cap of 5.** If a reader has identified 8 or 10 "key ideas," they have not synthesized -- they have itemized. Push back and ask: which 3 would survive if the others were deleted? That compression is the intellectual work.

3. **Every quote requires an annotation.** A quote pasted without explanation is plagiarism of the author's phrasing without the reader doing any analytical work. If a quote cannot be annotated in 1-2 sentences, it is the wrong quote.

4. **Application notes must be domain-specific and time-bound.** "Apply this to my work" is not an application note. The reader must name a specific context, a specific behavior, and a specific timeframe. Reject generic intentions and ask for specifics.

5. **Do not flatten the methodology evaluation.** Every non-fiction book makes an implicit claim about how its evidence works. The summary must surface this: is the book empirically grounded, narrative-driven, or primarily logical? This single distinction determines how much epistemic weight to assign the conclusions.

6. **Flag survivorship bias and selection effects in business and self-help books.** These genres systematically over-sample successful outcomes and under-sample failures. If the book's argument rests on case studies of successful individuals or organizations, note this structural vulnerability explicitly. It is the single most common analytical error in popular non-fiction.

7. **Source quality must be noted.** A summary produced from full reading is different from one produced from highlights or memory. Never allow a reconstructed summary to be confused with a text-faithful one. The Source Quality Note field is mandatory, not optional.

8. **Intellectual connections must include at least one challenge or disagreement.** A summary that only shows where a book agrees with other work is intellectually incomplete. Every meaningful argument has a counterposition. If the reader cannot name one, help them generate it.

9. **The self-check must be done, not skipped.** If the reader cannot state the thesis from memory immediately after completing the summary, the summary has not created understanding -- it has created the feeling of understanding. This distinction matters. Run the check, note any failures, and treat them as review priorities.

10. **Summaries of translated works must note the translation.** Arguments lose precision in translation, and readers should know whether they are working with the author's original voice or an intermediary's interpretation. For non-English originals, note the translator and edition.

## Edge Cases

### The reader has not actually finished the book

This is common and should not be treated as a failure condition -- partial summaries are legitimate. However, the output must be handled differently. Mark the Source Quality Note as "Partial read through Ch. X" and restrict the key ideas section to only what has been read. Do not infer what the author "probably argues" in unread sections. Instead, add a "Thesis (provisional)" label to the thesis section and include a note: "Thesis reconstruction will require updating after completing Part II/Ch. X onwards." For the application notes, restrict to ideas already encountered in the read portion. This is better than a complete-seeming summary that is actually speculation.

### The book is structured as an essay collection or anthology rather than a linear argument

Many important books -- particularly in philosophy, social criticism, and cultural commentary -- do not have a single propulsive thesis. They have an organizing sensibility or recurring preoccupation that connects independent essays. In this case, replace "Central Thesis" in the output with "Organizing Principle or Recurring Argument" and acknowledge that the book is making multiple semi-independent arguments rather than one sustained case. Identify the 2-3 ideas that appear across the most essays as the through-line. Note this structural feature explicitly in the Methodology section: "This book does not build a single linear argument; it circles a central tension/question/theme from multiple angles."

### The reader strongly agrees with the book and cannot identify weaknesses

This is an analytical blind spot, not a feature of the book. The absence of perceived weakness usually means the reader shares the author's assumptions and cannot see them as assumptions. Probe with directed questions: "What kind of person or organization would this advice fail for?" "What would someone from a different political/cultural/disciplinary background object to?" "Does the author ever acknowledge counterexamples, or do they only present confirming cases?" Use these questions to surface at least one genuine limitation. A summary that reports no weaknesses is not analytical -- it is a testimonial.

### The book's core claims have been empirically updated or superseded since publication

This occurs frequently with older popular science books, early behavioral economics titles, and management books drawing on research from the 1990s or early 2000s. When the reader identifies (or you can identify) that specific studies or findings cited in the book have been challenged, replicated with different results, or retracted, note this clearly in the Methodology section under a "Subsequent Evidence Update" sub-note. This does not invalidate the entire book -- a book can have durable frameworks even if specific supporting studies were later questioned -- but the reader needs to know which claims to hold more loosely.

### The reader wants to summarize a fiction novel

Analytical summarization as designed here is not appropriate for fiction. Fiction does not make propositional arguments that can be extracted as a thesis and key ideas -- it makes meaning through structure, character, imagery, and experience rather than through claims and evidence. If the reader needs to process a novel's themes for academic work, redirect to a thematic analysis approach. If they need to recall plot for discussion, redirect to a simple narrative outline. Do not force fiction through this framework -- the result will be a reductive distortion of how literary meaning works.

### The reader is trying to summarize a textbook rather than an authored argument

Textbooks are reference works, not arguments. They are designed to transmit established consensus knowledge, not to advance a contested claim. Attempting to extract a "thesis" from a textbook produces a content summary, not an analytical summary. In this case, convert the task: replace "Central Thesis" with "Core Conceptual Framework" (the organizing model or set of models the textbook builds), replace "Key Ideas" with "Foundational Concepts" (the 3-5 concepts a learner must master to understand the field covered), and replace the "Intellectual Connections" section with "Prerequisites and Builds Toward" (what background knowledge is assumed and what further study this enables). The application notes remain intact.

### The reader is summarizing a book they strongly disliked or disagree with

Intellectual disagreement is a productive reading posture, but it creates a risk of producing a straw-man summary that misrepresents the author's strongest version of the argument before dismissing it. Apply the steel-manning discipline: before writing any weakness or disagreement section, first articulate the author's argument in a form the author would recognize as fair. A good test is the "would the author say yes, that's my argument?" test. Produce the strongest possible version of the case in the Key Ideas section, then locate the genuine weaknesses in the Methodology evaluation. Do not allow dislike of the conclusion to infect the reconstruction of the argument.
