# Catalog Audit for AEM Edge Delivery Services

Validate that product data flows correctly from Adobe Commerce through the Catalog Service GraphQL API to AEM Edge Delivery Services product blocks, identifying mismatches in pricing, images, descriptions, and availability between the catalog source and the rendered storefront. Produces a data integrity report with specific discrepancies and remediation steps.

## Context: Product Data Flow in EDS Commerce

Product data flows through a pipeline with multiple failure points: **Adobe Commerce** (source of truth) --> **SaaS Data Export** (async sync, may lag minutes to hours) --> **Catalog Service GraphQL API** (`catalog-service.adobe.io/graphql`, read-optimized cloud API with its own caching layer) --> **EDS Product Blocks** (PDP/PLP dropin components that render API data into the DOM).

Common failure points: (1) SaaS export lag — changes in Commerce have not synced yet; (2) SaaS export errors — products fail to export due to missing attributes or invalid images; (3) Catalog Service caching — stale cached API responses persist after export; (4) Block rendering errors — PDP/PLP JavaScript incorrectly maps or formats API fields; (5) Currency/locale mismatch — wrong store view code causes wrong currency or language; (6) Image URL issues — media domain unreachable from storefront (CDN mismatch, CORS, domain change).

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a checklist to track progress:

## Step 1: Verify Catalog Service Connection

Before auditing individual products, confirm the Catalog Service API is reachable and responding correctly.

### Connection Test

If the user can provide the API endpoint and headers (or they are available in the project's `configs.xlsx`), attempt a simple introspection or product query:

### Common Connection Failures

- **401 Unauthorized** — API key invalid or missing. Check `configs.xlsx` for `commerce.headers.x-api-key`.
- **403 Forbidden** — Environment ID or store view code incorrect. Verify `Magento-Environment-Id` and `Magento-Store-View-Code`.
- **Empty response** — SaaS Data Export has not completed initial sync. Check Commerce admin > System > Data Export Logs.
- **Timeout** — Network/DNS issue. Check if the EDS project has preconnect hints for the API domain.

## Step 2: Sample Product Data from API

Select a representative sample of products to audit. Aim for:

- **3-5 simple products** across different categories.
- **2-3 configurable products** (products with options like size, color) if the catalog includes them.
- **1 out-of-stock product** to verify availability handling.
- **1 product with special pricing** (sale price, tier pricing) if applicable.

For each product, query the full product detail from the Catalog Service. The query should request: `sku`, `name`, `urlKey`, `shortDescription`, `description`, `price` (regular and final with amount/currency), `priceRange`, `images` (url, label, roles), `inStock`, `categories` (name, urlPath, breadcrumbs), and `attributes`. Record the API response for each product — this is the **expected data** that the storefront should display.

## Step 3: Fetch Rendered Product Pages

For each sampled product, fetch the corresponding PDP page on the storefront.

Construct product page URLs using the `urlKey` from the API response (typically `https://{domain}/products/{urlKey}` or a custom pattern). Fetch each page two ways: (1) browser or headless browser for the fully rendered DOM, and (2) `curl` for the raw HTML before JavaScript. From the rendered page, extract:

## Step 4: Compare API Data to Rendered Content

For each sampled product, compare the Catalog Service API response to the rendered storefront page.

Classify any discrepancies as: **Data mismatch** (API says one thing, page shows another — rendering bug or data transformation error), **Missing data** (API returns a field but the page does not display it), **Stale data** (API is current but page shows old data — CDN or browser cache), or **Formatting mismatch** (same data displayed differently, e.g., "$29.99" vs "29.99 USD").

## Step 5: Validate Product Images

Product images are a common failure point in the data pipeline.

### Image Loading Checks

For each sampled product, verify:

1. **Primary image loads** — Fetch the image URL from the rendered page. Does it return a 200 status with a valid image? A 404 or 403 is P0.
2. **Image matches catalog** — Does the rendered image match the image from the API response? Compare URLs or visual content. A wrong image is P0.
3. **All gallery images load** — If the PDP shows an image gallery, verify each image URL is reachable. Broken gallery images are P1.
4. **Image dimensions are present** — Check for `width` and `height` attributes on `<img>` elements. Missing dimensions cause CLS. P1.
5. **Alt text is populated** — Check `alt` attributes. Should contain the product name or image label from the API's `images.label` field. Empty alt is P1.

Common image failures: all images 404 (media domain changed — update image base URL or proxy through EDS CDN), some images 404 (specific products have missing images — re-upload in Commerce admin), CORS errors (media domain not in allowed origins — add to CORS headers), wrong images displayed (image sort order differs — check PDP block's `roles` field handling).

## Step 6: Check Pricing Accuracy

Pricing is the highest-stakes data element. Incorrect pricing can cause legal issues and erode customer trust.

### Price Verification

For each sampled product:

1. **Regular price** — The base price before any discounts. Compare API `price.regular.amount.value` to the rendered page.
2. **Final price** — The price the customer pays (after discounts, special pricing). Compare API `price.final.amount.value` to the rendered page.
3. **Currency symbol** — Verify the correct currency symbol is displayed (e.g., `$` for USD, `€` for EUR). A currency mismatch indicates a wrong store view code. P0.
4. **Discount display** — If the final price differs from the regular price, verify the page shows both prices with a visual distinction (strikethrough, "was/now" labels). Missing discount indication is P1.
5. **Tax handling** — Determine if prices are displayed inclusive or exclusive of tax. This should match the Commerce store configuration. Mismatch is P0.

### Configurable Product Pricing

For configurable products (products with options like size/color):

1. **Base price** — Verify the initially displayed price matches the default variant.
2. **Price updates on option selection** — Select different options (if using a browser) and verify the price updates. The updated price should match the API response for that specific variant.
3. **Price range** — Some sites show a price range (e.g., "$29.99 - $49.99") for configurable products. Verify the range matches the API's `priceRange` field.

## Step 7: Validate Category Navigation

Category pages (PLP) are the primary discovery path for products on a storefront.

### Category Page Checks

1. **Category page renders** — Navigate to a category URL (e.g., `/categories/{category-url-key}`). Verify the PLP block loads and displays products. A blank category page is P0.
2. **Product count** — Compare the number of products displayed on the category page to the expected count from the catalog. A significant discrepancy (e.g., 10 displayed vs 50 expected) suggests pagination or filtering issues. P1.
3. **Product data accuracy in cards** — Spot-check 3-5 product cards on the PLP. Verify the product name, price, and image match the Catalog Service data. Mismatches in the PLP are the same severity as PDP mismatches.
4. **Category breadcrumbs** — Verify breadcrumb navigation on category pages shows the correct hierarchy. Broken breadcrumbs are P2.
5. **Nested categories** — If the catalog has subcategories, navigate into a subcategory. Verify the PLP shows only products from that subcategory, not the parent.
6. **Sort and filter** — If the PLP supports sorting (by price, name) and filtering (by attribute), test these. Sorting should reorder correctly; filters should return only matching products. Broken sort/filter is P1.

## Step 8: Test Live Search Integration

If the storefront uses Adobe Live Search, validate search result accuracy.

### Search Tests

1. **Exact product name search** — Search for the exact name of a sampled product. It should appear as the first or second result. Missing from results is P0.
2. **Partial name search** — Search for a partial product name (first word or two). The product should appear in results. Missing is P1.
3. **SKU search** — Search for a product SKU. Behavior varies by configuration — some sites search SKUs, others do not. Document the behavior.
4. **Category term search** — Search for a category name (e.g., "jackets"). Results should include products from that category. Irrelevant results are P2.
5. **Zero results handling** — Search for a nonsense term (e.g., "xyzabc123"). The page should show a "no results" message, not an error. An error state is P1.

For each search that returns results, verify: product name matches catalog data (P0 if wrong), product image loads and matches (P1), product price matches Catalog Service (P0), link navigates to correct PDP (P0), and result count is reasonable (P2).

If search returns stale or missing data, check indexing status in Commerce admin under Marketing > Live Search > Indexing Status. Note that Live Search indexing is separate from Catalog Service SaaS export — both must complete for results to be current.

Produce a comprehensive report of all findings:

- **B (85-94%)** — Minor discrepancies (descriptions, secondary images). No pricing issues.
- **C (70-84%)** — Some pricing or availability discrepancies. Needs attention.
- **D (below 70%)** — Significant data integrity issues. Do not launch until resolved.

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **The Catalog Service is the storefront's source of truth, not the Commerce admin.** The storefront reads from Catalog Service, which is a synced copy. Always compare storefront data to the Catalog Service API response, not directly to the Commerce admin, to isolate whether the issue is in the sync or the rendering.
2. **Price accuracy is non-negotiable.** Any pricing discrepancy is P0 regardless of the amount. A one-cent difference indicates a systemic issue that could manifest as larger errors.
3. **Test with real customer scenarios.** Do not just audit product detail pages in isolation. Follow the customer path: search for a product, navigate to it from a category page, view the PDP, add to cart. Data issues often manifest at transition points.
4. **Account for data propagation delays.** After catalog changes in Commerce, allow time for SaaS export and Catalog Service caching to update. A "discrepancy" that resolves after 30 minutes is not a bug — it is expected pipeline latency. But a discrepancy that persists for hours is a real issue.
5. **Audit regularly, not just at launch.** Catalog data changes constantly — new products, price updates, inventory changes. Schedule periodic audits (monthly at minimum) to catch drift before customers notice.
