# Conflict Next Skill

Use this skill when the user needs help crafting the next conflict scene with proper escalation and tension.

## What This Skill Does

1. **Analyzes Current Conflict Level** - Tracks escalation across chapters
2. **Recommends Conflict Type** - Suggests internal vs external conflicts
3. **Generates Conflict Scenarios** - Provides 3-5 concrete conflict ideas
4. **Tracks Tension Curve** - Ensures proper pacing of conflicts
5. **Validates Escalation** - Prevents premature resolution or flat tension

## When to Use

- **Mid-chapter** - "I need a conflict scene but don't know what type"
- **Feeling flat** - "The story lacks tension here"
- **Planning ahead** - "What conflicts should I set up?"
- **Stuck in writing** - "I need something to happen but what?"

## Conflict Framework

### The 4 Conflict Types

#### 1. Character vs Character (External)
**What it is**: Direct opposition between people
**Examples**:
- Argument over strategy
- Betrayal by ally
- Confrontation with rival
- Power struggle in group

**When to use**: Action-heavy scenes, establishing relationships

#### 2. Character vs Self (Internal)
**What it is**: Internal struggle, doubt, moral dilemma
**Examples**:
- Should I reveal the truth?
- Am I strong enough?
- Which value is more important?
- Guilt over past actions

**When to use**: Character development, quiet moments

#### 3. Character vs Society (External)
**What it is**: Fighting against rules, norms, systems
**Examples**:
- Breaking unjust law
- Challenging tradition
- Resisting authority
- Fighting corruption

**When to use**: Thematic exploration, world-building

#### 4. Character vs Nature/Fate (External)
**What it is**: Struggling against environment, circumstances, destiny
**Examples**:
- Natural disaster
- Incurable illness
- Prophecy constraints
- Resource scarcity

**When to use**: Survival scenarios, raising stakes

### Escalation Levels (5 stages)

```
Level 1: TENSION - Uncomfortable but manageable
  Example: Awkward conversation, minor disagreement
Level 2: FRICTION - Clear opposition but contained
  Example: Heated argument, passive-aggressive behavior
Level 3: CRISIS - Stakes raised, emotions high
  Example: Ultimatum given, secret revealed
Level 4: BREAKING POINT - Cannot go back, lines crossed
  Example: Betrayal, violence, irrevocable decision
Level 5: CATASTROPHE - Everything falls apart
  Example: Death, total loss, relationship destroyed
```

**Rule**: Each act should escalate gradually. Don't jump from Level 1 to Level 5 without intermediate steps.

## Workflow

### Step 1: Analyze Current State

```
Reading last 2-3 chapters...
Identifying recent conflicts...
Calculating current escalation level...
Checking character relationships...
```

Determines:
- **Recent conflict types** (avoid repetition)
- **Current escalation level** (ensure progression)
- **Character emotional states** (who's ready for conflict)
- **Outstanding tensions** (unresolved conflicts to revisit)

### Step 2: Recommend Conflict Type

```markdown
## Conflict Recommendation
**Current Escalation**: Level 2 (Friction)
**Recent Conflicts**:
- Ch 3: Character vs Character (argument with boss)
- Ch 4: Character vs Self (doubt about abilities)
**Recommended Next**: Character vs Society (Level 3 - Crisis)
**Why**:
- Variety: You've used Character vs Character twice recently
- Escalation: Moving from Level 2 → Level 3 maintains tension curve
- Thematic: Your story's theme of "justice vs order" needs exploration
- Character Arc: Protagonist needs to challenge the system (arc milestone)
```

### Step 3: Generate Conflict Scenarios

Provides 3-5 specific conflict ideas:

```markdown
## Option 1: The Forbidden Choice (Character vs Society)
**Escalation Level**: 3 (Crisis)
**Type**: External - Rules vs Needs
**Setup**:
Protagonist discovers the evidence they need is in a restricted archive. The law forbids access, but it's the only way to save an innocent person.
**Conflict**:
- If they break in: Crime, betrayal of badge, risk everything
- If they follow rules: Innocent person suffers, justice delayed
- Time pressure: Decision must be made tonight
**Tension Points**:
- Security guard is a friend (complicates choice)
- Evidence might not even be there (uncertainty)
- Someone else knows they're considering it (pressure)
**Potential Outcomes**:
1. Break in → Success but caught → Level 4 escalation
2. Break in → Not caught but guilt → Internal conflict next
3. Follow rules → Innocent suffers → Regret and new motivation
4. Find third option → Lateral thinking moment → Mastery pattern
**Shuangdian Opportunity**:
- If Break in: REV-02 (Underdog Reversal) when protagonist outsmarts security
- If Third option: MAS-01 (Simple Solution) when protagonist finds legal loophole
```

```markdown
## Option 2: The Public Accusation (Character vs Character)
**Escalation Level**: 3 (Crisis)
**Type**: External - Direct Confrontation
**Setup**:
At a public event, antagonist openly accuses protagonist of incompetence, citing past failures. Everyone is watching.
**Conflict**:
- Respond defensively → Look weak
- Fight back aggressively → Look petty
- Stay silent → Appear guilty
- No perfect answer exists
**Tension Points**:
- Some accusations are partially true (vulnerability)
- Mentor is in the room watching (judgment)
- Media is present (consequences magnified)
**Potential Outcomes**:
1. Explosive response → Relationship damaged → Level 4
2. Composed defense → Earns respect but tension persists
3. Walk away → Short-term loss, long-term dignity
4. Turn tables → Reveal antagonist's hypocrisy → DOM-01
**Shuangdian Opportunity**:
- DOM-03 (Forced Acknowledgment) if protagonist makes antagonist admit truth
- CAT-02 (Public Humiliation Endured) if protagonist takes high road
```

```markdown
## Option 3: The Moral Dilemma (Character vs Self)
**Escalation Level**: 2-3 (Friction to Crisis)
**Type**: Internal - Values Conflict
**Setup**:
Protagonist must choose between protecting their partner (personal loyalty) or following a lead that implicates partner's family (duty/justice).
**Conflict**:
- Protect partner → Betray own values, guilt
- Follow duty → Hurt loved one, relationship at risk
- Try to do both → Likely fail at both
**Tension Points**:
- Partner doesn't know protagonist knows (secret)
- Evidence is damning but not conclusive (uncertainty)
- Deadline approaching (time pressure)
**Potential Outcomes**:
1. Choose duty → Relationship crisis → External conflict next
2. Choose loyalty → Internal guilt → Character flaw magnified
3. Confess to partner → Shared burden → Relationship test
4. Find exonerating evidence → Relief but trust issues remain
**Shuangdian Opportunity**:
- CAT-01 (Meaningful Suffering) when protagonist chooses painful right path
- HEA-02 (Understanding Moment) if partner responds with grace
```

## Conflict Escalation Tracking

After presenting options, skill tracks the choice:

```markdown
## Escalation Status
**Before**: Level 2 (Friction)
**After** (if Option 1 chosen): Level 3 (Crisis)
**Trajectory**: On track for Act 2 climax
**Recommendation**:
- Next 1-2 chapters: Maintain Level 3 with complications
- Chapter X: Escalate to Level 4 (Breaking Point)
- Act climax: Level 5 (Catastrophe)
**Warning**: ⚠️ You're approaching Level 4 territory. Ensure previous conflicts are somewhat resolved before adding more, or risk overwhelming the reader.
```

## Advanced Features

### 1. Conflict Stacking
```
You currently have 3 unresolved conflicts:
1. Protagonist vs Boss (Chapter 2)
2. Protagonist vs Self (Chapter 4)
3. Protagonist vs Partner (Chapter 5)
**Suggestion**: Resolve #1 (Boss) before adding new conflict, OR
**Better**: Combine #2 and #3 - Internal doubt affects relationship
```

### 2. Ticking Clock Integration
```
⏰ Detected time pressure: Trial is in 3 days (mentioned Ch 5)
**Conflict Amplifier**: Add urgency to any conflict:
- "You have 48 hours to decide"
- "Someone else is also searching for the evidence"
- "The window of opportunity is closing"
```

### 3. Relationship Impact Prediction
```
If you choose Option 2 (Public Accusation):
**Relationship Changes**:
- Protagonist ↔ Antagonist: Friction → Broken (Level 4)
- Protagonist ↔ Mentor: Neutral → Disappointed? (depends on response)
- Protagonist ↔ Public: Unknown → Judged (reputation at stake)
**Future Conflicts Unlocked**:
- Antagonist will escalate to sabotage
- Mentor may distance themselves
- Public opinion becomes factor in decisions
```

### 4. Genre-Appropriate Conflicts
```
**Detected Genre**: Police Procedural
**Genre Expectations**:
- External conflicts should outnumber internal 2:1
- Climax should involve life-or-death stakes
- Resolution should restore order (or subvert expectation)
**Your Current Mix**:
- External: 5 conflicts
- Internal: 4 conflicts
✅ Good balance
**Suggestion**: Next major conflict should be external to maintain genre conventions.
```
