# Deep History — Before the Beginning

Traditional history begins with writing (~3200 BCE). Big History begins with the Big Bang (13.8 billion years ago). Deep history occupies the crucial middle ground: the 200,000+ years of anatomically modern human existence before agriculture and writing. Daniel Lord Smail argues that starting history at "civilization" is an arbitrary choice rooted in Judeo-Christian sacred history (the Garden of Eden as a starting point was simply replaced by "Sumer" in secular scholarship). Deep history recovers the vast majority of the human experience that this convention erases.

This skill was added after Spelunker research confirmed that excluding pre-agricultural history is the single most criticized starting point in contemporary historiography.

## David Christian's Big History Thresholds

Big History provides a framework that places human history within cosmic history:

**Threshold 6 is the key for deep history**: What makes humans unique is *collective learning* — the ability to transmit knowledge across generations, enabling cumulative cultural evolution. No other species does this at scale.

## The Three Deep History Debates

### 1. The Cognitive Revolution

**When did humans become "behaviorally modern"?** Anatomically modern humans (~300,000 YA) predate clear evidence of symbolic thought (~70,000-100,000 YA). What changed?

- **Late emergence theory**: A genetic mutation ~70,000 YA enabled fully modern language and symbolic thought (Harari's "Cognitive Revolution" in *Sapiens*)
- **Gradualist theory**: Modern cognition emerged gradually over 200,000+ years; the archaeological record is spotty, not absent
- **Material culture theory**: Symbolic behavior appears when population density makes it useful, not when brains become capable

**Key evidence**: Blombos Cave (South Africa, ~75,000 YA) — ochre engravings and shell beads suggesting symbolic thought far earlier and further from Europe than previously assumed.

### 2. The Out of Africa Migrations

Modern humans left Africa in at least two major waves:
- **First wave** (~70,000–60,000 YA): Along the southern coast to Australia (~65,000 YA)
- **Second wave** (~45,000 YA): Into Europe and northern Asia; replacement of (and limited interbreeding with) Neanderthals and Denisovans

**What genetics reveals**: All non-African humans carry 1-4% Neanderthal DNA; Melanesian and Australian Aboriginal populations carry additional Denisovan DNA. Human history is not a clean tree but a braided stream.

### 3. The Neolithic Revolution

The transition from foraging to farming (~10,000 BCE, independently in at least 7 regions):

**Was agriculture progress?** James C. Scott (*Against the Grain*, 2017) argues that early agriculture made people shorter, sicker, more unequal, and more vulnerable to famine and epidemic disease. Foragers worked less, ate better, and lived more egalitarian lives. Agriculture was adopted not because it was better but because it was *more productive per unit of land* — enabling population growth that, once started, was difficult to reverse.

## Smail's Neurohistory

Daniel Lord Smail (*On Deep History and the Brain*, 2008) proposes that history should include the ways humans have manipulated their own neurochemistry through cultural practices:

- **Psychotropic mechanisms**: Alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, opiates, but also music, ritual, storytelling, sports — cultural practices that alter brain chemistry
- **The telectochemistry thesis**: As states grew, rulers used "teletropic" mechanisms (practices that affect others' brain chemistry from a distance) — public spectacles, religious rituals, propaganda, terror

**The implication**: Cultural history has a neurochemical dimension that connects deep history to modern life. The human desire to alter consciousness is not a modern phenomenon — it is one of the oldest and most persistent features of our species.

## Diagnostic Framework

When engaging with deep history:

1. **What timescale is appropriate?** (Thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of years?)
2. **What evidence is available?** (Archaeological, genetic, linguistic, comparative ethnographic?)
3. **What conventional starting point is being challenged?** (And why was that starting point chosen?)
4. **What does deep time reveal that shorter timescales miss?** (Species-level patterns, migration, cognitive evolution)
5. **What assumptions about "human nature" are being tested?** (Is the claim culturally specific or species-wide?)
