# DevExpress WinForms Property Grid

`PropertyGridControl` shows and edits the public properties of any object, similar to Visual Studio's Properties window. Assign any object to `SelectedObject` — the control reflects on it, auto-creates rows, and groups them by `[Category]` attribute. Rows can also be defined manually in code or the VS designer.

Two visual styles are available: **Classic** (tabular, Visual Studio-like) and **Office** (tabbed, with track bars and property markers). Both can show expandable nested objects and editable collection properties via a dialog editor.

## When to Use This Skill

- Create a settings panel or object inspector that shows an object's properties without writing individual editors.
- Configure which properties appear, their display names, in-place editors, and formats.
- Let users edit `List<T>` or other collection properties through a collection editor dialog.
- Group properties into named categories with expand/collapse behavior.
- Make complex object properties (e.g., `DatabaseSettings`, `ProxyConfig`) expandable so their nested fields are accessible.
- Use the Office view with tabbed navigation and property markers.
- Let users **search/filter properties** with the built-in find panel — no custom search box or toolbar needed.

### Host Form (Recommended)

`PropertyGridControl` works on a plain `Form`. For consistent skinning/theming, hosting it on `XtraForm` (or `RibbonForm` when hosting a `RibbonControl`) is recommended so the control and form chrome paint with the same skin.

## Before You Start — Ask the Developer

If the host agent has a structured question-asking tool available, use it to ask these questions one at a time with clear options — for example, Claude Code's `AskUserQuestion` tool or GitHub Copilot's `askQuestions` tool. If no such tool is available, ask the questions directly in the chat response before generating code.

1. **Which object(s) are shown?** One object (`SelectedObject`) or multiple (`SelectedObjects`)? Multiple objects show only shared properties.
2. **Auto or manual rows?** Empty `Rows` collection → auto-generated from reflection. Pre-populated → uses defined rows only.
3. **View style?** Classic (default) supports `MultiEditorRow`; Office supports tabs and track bars. Office mode does **not** support `MultiEditorRow`.
4. **Collection properties?** Need the DevExpress editor or a custom dialog? Configure `OptionsCollectionEditor` or `DefaultCollectionEditors`.
5. **Complex properties?** Does the nested class have `[TypeConverter(typeof(ExpandableObjectConverter))]`?
6. **Property filtering?** If only a subset of properties should appear, handle `CustomPropertyDescriptors`.

### Let Users Search Properties (Find Panel)

To satisfy a request like "allow users to search the property grid", use the built-in find panel — do **not** build a custom search box or toolbar. `PropertyGridControl` exposes the find panel directly:

`PropertyGridControl` has **no** `ShowFindPanel()` method (that exists on the Data Grid, not the Property Grid) — use the `FindPanelVisible` property instead.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |

| Row not appearing | Property has no public getter or is decorated with `[Browsable(false)]` | Add getter; remove or flip `[Browsable]` |

| Office View tabs empty | Property not assigned to any tab in `TabPanelCustomize` | Property Grid does not show unassigned properties in Office View |

## Constraints & Rules

CRITICAL — follow these rules in every interaction:

1. **Verify builds**: after code changes, the project must build cleanly before you claim success. If you have a build environment, run `dotnet build` and report any errors. If you cannot (or must not) execute commands, ask the developer to run `dotnet build` and share the output — never report success on an unverified build.
2. **Do not mix DevExpress package versions**: reference the control through the `DevExpress.Win.VerticalGrid` (or `DevExpress.Win.Navigation`) NuGet package — never assembly DLLs by path — and keep every DevExpress package in the project on the same version.
3. **Target Windows**: `PropertyGridControl` is WinForms-only. Target .NET Framework 4.6.2+ or .NET 8+ with the `-windows` TFM suffix for SDK-style projects.
4. **Auto vs. manual rows**: if the `Rows` collection is non-empty when `SelectedObject` is assigned, the control uses the defined rows and does **not** auto-generate. Leave `Rows` empty for reflection-based rows.
5. **Office view limits**: the Office view does not support `MultiEditorRow`; use the Classic view for side-by-side editors.
6. **Expandable nested objects**: a nested object property is only expandable when its **type** is decorated with `[TypeConverter(typeof(ExpandableObjectConverter))]`.
7. **Refresh after model changes**: call `RefreshAllProperties()` when the bound object changes outside the grid — the control does not observe arbitrary property changes automatically.
8. **Adding assembly references (.NET Framework):** Resolve the required assemblies via the DevExpress Docs MCP, add the corresponding NuGet package, or — if a visual designer is available — have the developer drag the control from the Toolbox so references are added automatically. Avoid manually editing the `.csproj` references node to add new assembly references.
