# DevExpress WPF Loading Indicators

Three different controls for "show the user that something is happening" — but they're not interchangeable. **`SplashScreenManager`** is a window-level splash screen for app startup or long operations (runs on a **separate UI thread**, immune to main-thread freezes). **`LoadingDecorator`** is a content container that wraps any UI and shows an indicator while the content loads (configurable owner-lock). **`WaitIndicator`** is a simple panel shown inside a window (runs on the **main UI thread**). All three live in `DevExpress.Xpf.Core`.

> The older **`DXSplashScreen`** API is **legacy**. New apps should use `SplashScreenManager` instead.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when you need to:

- Show a splash screen at application startup
- Show a loading indicator over a region while it's fetching data
- Show a quick spinner while a button-triggered operation runs
- Decide between SplashScreenManager / LoadingDecorator / WaitIndicator

## Prerequisites & Installation

All three indicators live in the **`DevExpress.Wpf.Core` package**. Add `DevExpress.Wpf.ThemesLW` when using Lightweight Themes.

All DevExpress packages in a project must share the same version. A valid DevExpress license is required.

## XAML Namespace

`LoadingDecorator` and `WaitIndicator` are XAML elements (`<dx:LoadingDecorator>`, `<dx:WaitIndicator>`). `SplashScreenManager` is API-only — call methods from code (typically `App.xaml.cs`).

## Before You Start — Ask the Developer

If the host agent has a structured question-asking tool available, use it to ask these questions one at a time with clear options — for example, Claude Code's `AskUserQuestion` tool or GitHub Copilot's `askQuestions` tool. If no such tool is available, ask the questions directly in the chat response before generating code.

1. **What's the trigger?**
   - App startup → **SplashScreenManager** (`ShowOnStartup`)
   - A region that takes a long time to render → **LoadingDecorator**
   - A button click that triggers an operation → **SplashScreenManager.CreateWaitIndicator()** (separate thread, simple), or **WaitIndicator** with `DeferedVisibility` (main thread, in-window)
2. **Does the main thread get blocked?** If yes → only `SplashScreenManager` works (separate UI thread). The other two animate on the main thread and freeze with it.
3. **Should the user still see the rest of the app?** LoadingDecorator's `OwnerLock` decides what's locked while content loads (entire window / input only / just the decorator / nothing).
4. **MVVM?** All three have MVVM-friendly options: `SplashScreenManagerService`, `LoadingDecorator.IsSplashScreenShown` (bindable), `WaitIndicator.DeferedVisibility` (bindable).

`ShowOnStartup` auto-closes the splash when the main window finishes loading.

### 2. LoadingDecorator — Slow-Loading Content

The decorator wraps the grid; the loading indicator shows automatically while the grid is loading. When loading completes, the indicator disappears.

### 3. WaitIndicator — Inline Busy Indicator

Bind `DeferedVisibility` to a ViewModel boolean. When `IsBusy` becomes `true`, the indicator appears over the content.

Updates flow into the splash via the bindable `ViewModel.Progress` / `ViewModel.Status` even though the splash runs on a separate UI thread.

`OwnerLock="LoadingContent"` blocks input only on the decorated panel — the rest of the window stays interactive.

The `LoadingDecorator` uses a `WaitIndicator` internally — you can supply your own template via `SplashScreenTemplate`.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |

| `dx:` prefix unresolved | Missing namespace / NuGet | Add `xmlns:dx="http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/core"`; install `DevExpress.Wpf.Core`. |
| Splash screen animation freezes during long startup work | Tried to use `WaitIndicator` or `LoadingDecorator` at startup; both run on the main thread | Use `SplashScreenManager` instead — runs on a separate UI thread, immune to main-thread blocks. |
| `LoadingDecorator` shows but doesn't hide | Wrapped content doesn't trigger "loaded" event, or `IsSplashScreenShown="True"` was set without setting it back to `false` | Bind `IsSplashScreenShown` to a ViewModel boolean and toggle it; or omit the binding and let the decorator detect content loading. |

## Constraints & Rules

CRITICAL — follow these rules in every interaction:

1. **Build verification**: After changes, run `dotnet build` and report errors before claiming success.
2. **Target framework**: Windows-only (`net{X}-windows`, `UseWPF=true`).
3. **NuGet**: `DevExpress.Wpf.Core` for all three. All DevExpress packages share one version.
4. **XAML namespace**: `dx:` (core).
5. **Match the indicator to the threading need**:
   - Main thread will freeze → `SplashScreenManager`
   - Region within an interactive UI → `LoadingDecorator` or `WaitIndicator`
6. **Use `DeferedVisibility` on `WaitIndicator`** — not standard `Visibility`. This avoids briefly showing the indicator for sub-100ms operations.
7. **Apply theme before showing a themed splash** — `CompatibilitySettings.UseLightweightThemes = true;` (when using LW) and `ApplicationThemeHelper.ApplicationThemeName = ...;` must run **before** `SplashScreenManager.CreateThemed().ShowOnStartup()`.
8. **Application ambiguity**: When generating `App.xaml.cs` on .NET 6+, qualify `System.Windows.Application`.
9. **Don't use the legacy `DXSplashScreen`** in new code — it's been superseded by `SplashScreenManager`.
10. **Adding assembly references (.NET Framework):** Resolve the required assemblies via the DevExpress Docs MCP, add the corresponding NuGet package, or — if a visual designer is available — have the developer drag the control from the Toolbox so references are added automatically. Avoid manually editing the `.csproj` references node to add new assembly references.
