# DevExpress WPF TreeList (TreeListControl)

The DevExpress WPF TreeList is a data-aware control for displaying and editing hierarchical data as a tree. The primary class is `DevExpress.Xpf.Grid.TreeListControl`, which uses `DevExpress.Xpf.Grid.TreeListView` as its View. TreeListControl supports three data binding strategies — **self-referential** (flat data with Key/Parent fields), **hierarchical** (nested child collections or templates), and **unbound mode** (programmatic `TreeListNode` tree). It shares the same feature surface as `GridControl`: sorting, filtering, summaries, editing, conditional formatting, drag-and-drop, and printing/export.

> **TreeListControl vs. TreeListView**: `TreeListControl` is a standalone control; `TreeListView` is its View class. The same `TreeListView` class can also act as a View of the regular `GridControl` (in which case the parent is `GridControl`, not `TreeListControl`). If your data is hierarchical and you need a tree-only experience, use `TreeListControl`. If your data is sometimes tabular and sometimes hierarchical, consider `GridControl` with a `TreeListView`.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when you need to:

- Display org charts, file/folder trees, project hierarchies, BOM, or any parent-child data
- Bind to flat data with Key/Parent fields (employees with `ReportsTo`, categories with `ParentId`)
- Bind to nested object collections (each item has a `Children` property)
- Build a tree programmatically without a data source (unbound mode) using `TreeListNode`
- Define columns explicitly with `TreeListColumn` and configure in-place editors
- Allow users to expand/collapse, select multiple nodes or cells, edit values, sort, filter, search

## Before You Start — Ask the Developer

If the host agent has a structured question-asking tool available, use it to ask these questions one at a time with clear options — for example, Claude Code's `AskUserQuestion` tool or GitHub Copilot's `askQuestions` tool. ### General Questions
1. **Target framework**: .NET 8+ or .NET Framework 4.x?
2. **New or existing project**: Creating a new WPF app, or adding `TreeListControl` to an existing one?
3. **DevExpress version**: Which version (e.g., 24.2, 25.1, 26.1)? All DX packages must use the same version.

### TreeList–Specific
5. **Data shape**: Which of the following describes the data?
   - **Self-referential / flat**: every item has `Id` and `ParentId` (or similar). Most common for org charts, categories, ledgers.
   - **Hierarchical with nested collections**: every item has a `Children` property. Common for menus, document outlines, file trees built from POCOs.
   - **Hierarchical with different types per level**: e.g., Department → Team → Employee — each level a different class. Use `ChildNodesSelector` or `HierarchicalDataTemplate`.
   - **Unbound**: no underlying data source — you build the tree programmatically (`TreeListNode` instances).
6. **Async loading**: Do child nodes load on demand from a remote service? If yes, use the async child-nodes selector pattern.
7. **Auto-expand on load**: All nodes expanded by default (`AutoExpandAllNodes="True"`) or only roots?
8. **Features needed**: Which of these — sorting, filtering, multiple selection, editing, summaries, drag-drop, conditional formatting, printing? Match references in the Navigation Guide.

> **Rule**: If the developer's answer is ambiguous or missing, ask before generating code. Do not guess.

## Component Overview

The TreeList is composed of:

- **`DevExpress.Xpf.Grid.TreeListControl`** — the main control. Holds columns, a View, and data source binding.
- **`DevExpress.Xpf.Grid.TreeListView`** — the View. Owns `KeyFieldName`, `ParentFieldName`, `ChildNodesPath`, `AutoExpandAllNodes`, `Nodes` collection (in unbound mode).
- **`DevExpress.Xpf.Grid.TreeListColumn`** — defines a column. `FieldName` binds to a data field. In-place editor customizable via `EditSettings`.
- **`DevExpress.Xpf.Grid.TreeListNode`** — represents a single node in **unbound mode**. Has `Content` (the data object) and `Nodes` (child collection).
- Inherited from `DataControlBase`/`DataViewBase`: `ItemsSource`, `AutoGenerateColumns`, `AllowSorting`, `ShowSortIndicator`. Summaries use `TreeListSummaryItem` instances added to `TreeListControl.TotalSummary` (per-node summaries via `TreeListView.NodeSummary`).

The root (President) is the row whose `ParentID` is `null` (when using `int?`) — or a value that does not appear in any other record's `ID` field.

### What This Does
Builds a tree of employees from a flat list, using `ID` and `ParentID` to determine parent-child relationships. Columns auto-generate from `Employee` public properties; the example explicitly defines three for ordering control. All nodes expand on load.

Each item in `Departments` must have a `Children` property of the same type. The grid recursively walks the property to build the tree.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Tree is empty | `ItemsSource` is `null`, or no record's `ParentFieldName` value points to a valid `KeyFieldName` value | Verify `DataContext`, check that exactly one record is the root (its `ParentID` value doesn't match any **other** record's `ID`). |
| Only flat list shown (no hierarchy) | `KeyFieldName` / `ParentFieldName` not set, or `TreeDerivationMode` not `Selfreference` | Set both field names; `TreeDerivationMode` defaults to `Selfreference` so usually unnecessary explicitly. |
| `dxg:` prefix unresolved | Missing namespace declaration | Add `xmlns:dxg="http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/grid"`. |
| Build error: assembly not found | NuGet packages missing or version mismatch | Run `dotnet add package DevExpress.Wpf.Grid.Core` and ensure all DX packages use the same version. |
| License error at runtime | Missing or invalid DevExpress license | Register your license per the DevExpress installation guide. |
| Hierarchical binding doesn't show children | Items are not the same type (use `ChildNodesSelector` instead of `ChildNodesPath`) | Set `TreeDerivationMode="ChildNodesSelector"` and implement `IChildNodesSelector`. |
| Async loading flickers | Async children re-fetch every expand | Cache child results in your selector, or use `TreeListNode.ExpandStateBinding` to track expansion. |

## Constraints & Rules

CRITICAL — follow these rules in every interaction:

1. **Build verification**: After any changes, run `dotnet build` and report errors before claiming success.
2. **Target framework**: TreeList is Windows-only. The `.csproj` must target `net{version}-windows` with `<UseWPF>true</UseWPF>`.
3. **NuGet packages**: Use only packages from Prerequisites. Do not invent package names.
4. **Version consistency**: All DevExpress packages must share the same version (e.g., all 26.1.x).
5. **Namespace imports**: XAML needs `xmlns:dxg="http://schemas.devexpress.com/winfx/2008/xaml/grid"`. C# needs `using DevExpress.Xpf.Grid;`.
6. **License**: DevExpress requires a valid license. Remind the developer on license-related errors.
7. **Self-referential mode**: The root record's `ParentFieldName` value must not match any other record's `KeyFieldName`. **Prefer `int?` with `null` for the root** — this is unambiguous. If using non-nullable `int`, choose a sentinel value (e.g., `-1`) that never appears as a key. Never use `0` as both a root sentinel and a valid key value. Default `TreeDerivationMode` is `Selfreference`; for hierarchical data set `ChildNodesSelector` mode explicitly (use the `ChildNodesPath` property for same-type children, or implement `IChildNodesSelector` for different types per level).
8. **MVVM vs. code-behind**: Prefer MVVM if the developer uses `ViewModelBase`. Use code-behind only for unbound mode (where building the tree is inherently imperative).
9. **Adding assembly references (.NET Framework):** Resolve the required assemblies via the DevExpress Docs MCP, add the corresponding NuGet package, or — if a visual designer is available — have the developer drag the control from the Toolbox so references are added automatically. Avoid manually editing the `.csproj` references node to add new assembly references.
