# Distributor Outreach Email

## What This Skill Does
Writes a sales outreach email to a film or content distributor introducing a completed project for acquisition consideration, including key commercial information an acquisitions team needs to evaluate the opportunity.

## When To Use This Skill
- A film or series is complete and you are reaching out to distributors for the first time
- You have screened at a festival and want to follow up with distributors who attended
- You are preparing for a film market (EFM, Cannes, AFM) and need pre-market outreach emails
- A sales agent or producer needs to approach multiple distributors efficiently

## What You Need To Provide
**Required:** Film title, format and runtime, brief logline (one sentence), production company, completion/delivery date, any festival screenings or awards, territories available for acquisition.

**Optional:** A prior connection to the distributor (met at a market, referral from a mutual contact), comparable titles in their catalogue, specific territories of interest, trailer or screener availability, any existing distribution deals already closed.

## How the Assistant Approaches This
1. Opens with brief professional context (who is writing, any connection to the recipient) and states immediately that the email concerns a completed project available for acquisition
2. Delivers the commercial essentials in compact form: title, format, runtime, logline, festival pedigree or key credentials, territories available — all information an acquisitions executive needs to decide whether to request a screener
3. Closes with a single clear ask — usually a screener request or a market meeting — and notes any time-sensitive factors (upcoming festival exposure, competing offers) without creating false urgency
4. Closes with a "Next Step" note: how many distributors to send this to in the first wave, whether to prepare a follow-up timing plan (typical response window is 2–3 weeks), and whether festival-strategy-brief should be run if the distribution strategy is still being planned

## Output Format
Subject line + email body. Body: 200–250 words. Professional sales tone — factual, efficient, confident. Not pitching a creative vision (that is the filmmaker's job); pitching an acquisition opportunity. Screener link or availability noted. Market-specific version (EFM, Cannes) available if requested. Output ends with a "Next Step" note: how many distributors to contact in the first outreach wave, expected response timeline, and whether to run festival-strategy-brief to develop the wider distribution strategy.

## Quality Criteria
- [ ] Subject line identifies this is an acquisition opportunity and names the project
- [ ] Logline is present and states the film's genre and central proposition
- [ ] Festival credits or pedigree stated factually (no inflated descriptions)
- [ ] Available territories clearly listed or described
- [ ] Screener access offered concretely — not "available upon request" as a vague formality
- [ ] Closing ask is specific: a screener link, a market meeting, or a call
- [ ] Output includes at least one concrete next action the user can take immediately (send the first wave, prepare a follow-up schedule, or run festival-strategy-brief)

## Example

### Input
Film: Cartography of the Unseen
Format: Feature documentary, 84 minutes
Logline: A blind geographer spends three years creating tactile maps of places she has never seen — and the maps start revealing things sighted cartographers missed.
Production company: Coastline Productions
Completion: Delivered, December 2024
Festival: World premiere at IDFA 2024 — selected for the main competition
Awards: Special Jury Mention, IDFA 2024
Territories available: All territories excluding Scandinavia (Nordic deal already closed)
Connection to recipient: No prior contact — outreach during EFM

### Output

**Subject:** Acquisition opportunity — CARTOGRAPHY OF THE UNSEEN (84 min doc, IDFA 2024 Special Jury Mention)

Dear [Name],

I'm writing from Coastline Productions to introduce CARTOGRAPHY OF THE UNSEEN, a completed feature documentary available for acquisition in all territories excluding Scandinavia.

CARTOGRAPHY OF THE UNSEEN (84 min) follows a blind geographer over three years as she creates tactile maps of places she has never seen — and her maps begin revealing things sighted cartographers had missed. The film had its world premiere in the IDFA Main Competition and received the Special Jury Mention in December 2024. A Nordic deal is already in place; all other territories remain available.

We're attending EFM this year and would welcome the chance to meet and screen the film for your team. I can also make a screener available immediately — link below, or I can arrange access via [platform] if preferred.

[Screener link / access instructions]

Please let me know if EFM timing works or if you'd prefer to review the screener first.

Best regards,

## Known Limitations
- This skill is calibrated for documentary and independent film. Distribution outreach for scripted series, formats, or studio productions follows different conventions and may require significant modification.
- The skill cannot generate accurate comparable catalogue titles for a specific distributor — references to their existing catalogue should be added manually and only if you know it well.
- If no festival pedigree exists, the email will be weaker. The skill will work, but acquisitions executives at most distributors use festival selection as a quality filter. A screener-only outreach without festival credits should be acknowledged honestly.
