# CI/CD Pipeline for AEM Edge Delivery Services

Analyze an AEM Edge Delivery Services repository's structure, generate GitHub Actions workflow files for linting, performance testing, link validation, and automated preview/publish operations via the AEM Admin API. Produces production-ready YAML workflow files and configuration that integrate with EDS's Git-based deployment model.

- For setting up AEM Cloud Manager pipelines — EDS does not use Cloud Manager.
- As a replacement for the AEM Code Sync bot — Code Sync handles deployment; this skill handles quality gates.

## Context

AEM Edge Delivery Services uses Git as its deployment mechanism. When code is pushed to the `main` branch, the AEM Code Sync bot detects the change and updates the live site — there is no build step, no webpack compilation, and no artifact deployment. This means traditional CI/CD concepts like "build the artifact and deploy it" do not apply. Instead, CI/CD for EDS focuses on quality gates: linting, performance regression testing, link validation, and optionally triggering preview/publish of content pages via the Admin API.

The AEM Admin API at `admin.hlx.page` provides programmatic access to preview and publish operations. A `POST` to `https://admin.hlx.page/preview/{owner}/{repo}/{branch}/{path}` triggers a preview update, and a `POST` to `https://admin.hlx.page/live/{owner}/{repo}/{branch}/{path}` triggers a publish. These endpoints accept an optional `x-auth-token` header for authenticated sites. This API allows CI pipelines to automate content invalidation after code changes.

EDS projects follow a specific JavaScript style: vanilla JS with ES modules, no bundler, no transpilation. The Airbnb ESLint config is the community standard, extended with EDS-specific rules (e.g., allowing `document.querySelector` patterns common in block decoration). CSS follows a strict custom-property-first approach with no preprocessors. These conventions mean linting configuration must be EDS-aware, not generic.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a checklist to track progress:

- [ ] Analyze project structure and identify existing CI configuration
- [ ] Generate ESLint configuration with Airbnb rules and EDS overrides
- [ ] Create the lint-and-validate workflow (ESLint + CSS checks)
- [ ] Create the Lighthouse CI workflow with EDS-appropriate thresholds

## Step 1: Analyze Project Structure

Examine the repository to understand the current state:

1. **Check for existing CI configuration.** Look for `.github/workflows/`, `.eslintrc.*`, `lighthouserc.*`, or any existing CI files. If workflows already exist, note them — the skill will extend, not overwrite.
2. **Identify the project structure.** EDS projects typically have: `scripts/` (JS files), `styles/` (CSS files), `blocks/` (block directories with JS/CSS pairs), `head.html`, `fstab.yaml`, and optional `tools/` or `test/` directories.
3. **Check for `package.json`.** If one exists, note existing dependencies and scripts. If it does not exist, the pipeline will need to create one with dev dependencies for ESLint and Lighthouse CI.
4. **Identify the content connection.** Check `fstab.yaml` for the SharePoint or Google Drive mountpoint — this determines the Admin API paths.
5. **Check for custom domains.** Look for any CNAME or domain configuration that affects which URLs to test.

Report findings before proceeding. If the repository does not look like an EDS project (no `scripts/aem.js`, no `fstab.yaml`), warn the user and confirm before continuing.

## Step 2: Generate ESLint Configuration

Create an ESLint configuration file (`.eslintrc.json`) with the Airbnb base config and EDS-specific overrides:

**Key EDS overrides:**
- Allow `no-param-reassign` for `block` parameters in block decoration functions — the standard EDS pattern `export default function decorate(block)` mutates the block element directly.
- Allow `import/extensions` for `.js` — EDS uses explicit `.js` extensions in imports because there is no bundler to resolve them.
- Disable `import/no-unresolved` — EDS uses bare paths resolved by the browser, not Node.
- Allow `no-restricted-syntax` exceptions for `for...of` loops — common in EDS block iteration.
- Set `env.browser: true` — all EDS code runs in the browser.

Create `.eslintignore` to exclude: `node_modules/`, `scripts/aem.js`, `scripts/aem.css` (these are Adobe-provided boilerplate files that should not be linted), and any `vendor/` directories.

If `package.json` does not exist, generate one with `eslint`, `eslint-config-airbnb-base`, and `eslint-plugin-import` as dev dependencies.

## Step 3: Create Lint and Validate Workflow

Generate `.github/workflows/lint.yaml`:

**Jobs:**

1. **eslint** — Install dependencies, run `npx eslint .` against `scripts/`, `blocks/`, and any custom JS directories. Fail the check on any error. Warnings are allowed but reported.
2. **css-validation** — Run a CSS syntax check against `styles/` and `blocks/**/*.css`. Verify that all CSS custom properties referenced in component CSS are defined in `styles/styles.css` or `styles/lazy-styles.css`. This catches undefined variable references that cause silent rendering failures.
3. **html-validation** — Validate `head.html` for well-formed HTML. Check that no inline `<script>` tags exist beyond the EDS boilerplate snippet. Check that no inline `<style>` tags exist beyond the CLS-prevention snippet.

Each job runs on `ubuntu-latest` with Node 20. Use `actions/cache` to cache `node_modules` between runs.

## Step 4: Create Lighthouse CI Workflow

Generate `.github/workflows/lighthouse.yaml` and `.lighthouserc.json`:

**Workflow triggers:** Run on pull requests to `main` and on a weekly schedule (to catch regressions from content changes).

**Lighthouse CI configuration:**
- **Performance:** >= 90 (EDS sites should score 95+ but 90 is a safe gate)
- **Accessibility:** >= 90
- **Best Practices:** >= 90
- **SEO:** >= 90
- **Specific audits:** `largest-contentful-paint` <= 2500ms, `cumulative-layout-shift` <= 0.1, `total-blocking-time` <= 200ms

**EDS-specific considerations:**
- Test against the `hlx.page` preview URL, not production — this avoids CDN cache effects and tests the actual code changes.
- Construct the preview URL from the repo owner, name, and branch: `https://{branch}--{repo}--{owner}.aem.page/`
- Run Lighthouse against 3-5 representative pages (homepage plus key templates).
- Use `--chrome-flags="--no-sandbox"` for GitHub Actions compatibility.
- Upload the Lighthouse HTML report as a workflow artifact for review.

Generate a comment action that posts the Lighthouse scores as a PR comment using `actions/github-script`.

## Step 5: Create Link Validation Workflow

Generate `.github/workflows/link-check.yaml`:

**Purpose:** Crawl the preview site and validate all internal and external links. Broken links are a common EDS issue because content authors can create links in Google Docs or SharePoint that reference pages not yet published.

**Configuration:**
- Use `lychee-action` or a similar link checker.
- Check all `.html` files in the repository for hardcoded links.
- Also check the live preview site by crawling the `hlx.page` URL.
- Exclude known-good external domains that block automated requests (e.g., LinkedIn, Facebook).
- Set a timeout of 30 seconds per link.
- Report broken links as check annotations on the PR.
- Allow 429 (rate-limited) responses as warnings, not failures.

**Run triggers:** On pull requests and on a weekly schedule to catch link rot.

## Step 6: Create Admin API Integration

Generate `.github/workflows/preview-publish.yaml`:

**Purpose:** After code merges to `main`, automatically trigger a preview update for affected pages via the AEM Admin API. This ensures that code changes (new blocks, CSS updates) are immediately reflected in the preview environment.

**Workflow:**
1. On push to `main`, determine which paths were affected by the commit.
2. For each affected path that corresponds to a content page, send a `POST` to `https://admin.hlx.page/preview/{owner}/{repo}/main/*` to trigger a bulk preview update.
3. Optionally, for tagged releases, trigger a publish (`POST` to `https://admin.hlx.page/live/{owner}/{repo}/main/*`).

**Authentication:** Use a GitHub Actions secret (`AEM_ADMIN_TOKEN`) for authenticated sites. Document how to obtain and set this token.

**Rate limiting:** The Admin API has rate limits. Batch requests and add a delay between calls. Use the bulk API endpoint (`/*`) when invalidating all pages after a significant code change.

**Error handling:** If the Admin API returns a non-200 status, retry once after 5 seconds. Log the response for debugging. Do not fail the workflow on Admin API errors — code deployment via Code Sync is independent.

## Step 7: Generate Branch Protection Configuration

Produce a recommended branch protection configuration document (not a workflow — branch protection is configured via GitHub settings or API):

**Recommended rules for `main`:**
- Require pull request reviews (at least 1 reviewer).
- Require status checks to pass: `eslint`, `lighthouse`, `link-check`.
- Require branches to be up to date before merging.
- Do not allow force pushes.
- Do not allow deletions.

**Rationale:** Since pushing to `main` triggers AEM Code Sync and updates the live site, `main` must be protected. All changes flow through pull requests with CI checks.

Provide the GitHub CLI commands to set these rules:

## Step 8: Create PR Check Workflow

Generate `.github/workflows/pr-checks.yaml` — a composite workflow that orchestrates all checks for pull requests:

1. Runs lint, Lighthouse, and link checks in parallel.
2. Posts a summary comment on the PR with pass/fail status for each check.
3. Includes a "Deploy Preview" link to the PR's preview URL: `https://{branch}--{repo}--{owner}.aem.page/`.

This gives PR reviewers a single place to see all CI results and access the preview.

## Step 9: Generate Documentation

Produce a `docs/ci-cd-guide.md` file covering:

1. **Overview** — what the pipeline does and why.
2. **Prerequisites** — Node 20, GitHub Actions enabled, repo secrets configured.
3. **Secrets required** — `AEM_ADMIN_TOKEN` (if using authenticated Admin API calls), `LHCI_GITHUB_APP_TOKEN` (if using Lighthouse CI GitHub app).
4. **Workflow descriptions** — what each workflow does, when it runs, how to interpret results.
5. **Customization** — how to adjust Lighthouse thresholds, add new lint rules, or exclude paths from link checking.
6. **Troubleshooting** — common issues and fixes.

## Final Step: Generate Report

Produce a summary of everything generated:

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **EDS has no build step — CI is about quality gates, not compilation.** The pipeline validates code quality and performance, not build artifacts.
2. **Git push to `main` is deployment.** Protect `main` accordingly. Every merge is a production release.
3. **Test against preview URLs, not production.** Use `hlx.page` preview URLs for Lighthouse and link checking so tests reflect the current code, not cached CDN content.
4. **Do not break the Code Sync contract.** CI workflows must not modify files in a way that interferes with AEM Code Sync. No generated files, no build outputs committed to the repo.
5. **Fail fast on P0 issues, warn on the rest.** Lint errors and critical Lighthouse failures block the PR. Warnings for link rot and minor style issues are informational.
6. **Keep secrets out of workflow files.** Use GitHub Actions secrets for Admin API tokens. Never hardcode credentials in YAML.
