**Surface understanding**: "We should interview the senior engineers to document their knowledge of power grid operations, then build a knowledge base from the transcripts."

The difference is immediate, structural, and reveals whether someone grasps the fundamental architecture of expert knowledge or is still operating in the failed extraction paradigm.
