# Frontend UI Typography Reviewer

Activates on: font-family / weight / scale token changes · Google Fonts imports · user asks about fonts/type/hierarchy while UI files active.

## Phase 0: Context

1. Read `CLAUDE.md` — product, brand personality
2. Derive brand voice in 3 concrete words

## Phase 1: Reflex Font Scan

Banned fonts (reflex_fonts_to_reject):

```
Fraunces · Newsreader · Lora · Crimson(Pro|Text) · Playfair(Display) · Cormorant(Garamond) · Syne
IBM Plex (Sans|Serif|Mono) · Space Mono · Space Grotesk · Inter
DM (Sans|Serif Display|Serif Text) · Outfit · Plus Jakarta Sans · Instrument (Sans|Serif)
Arial · Helvetica · Roboto · Open Sans
```

Every hit is at minimum a WARNING. 2+ in same project → CRITICAL.

Exception: if a reflex font is justified in docs AND the rest of the design commits to the direction → downgrade to SUGGESTION.

## Phase 2: Type Scale

- Ratio between steps: ≥1.25×, flag if <1.2×
- Step count: flag if >7
- Fluid (`clamp`) on product UI = problem; fixed `rem` on marketing hero = missed opportunity

## Phase 3: Line-Height / Line-Length

- Body line-height in 1.4–1.6 range
- Light-on-dark text: line-height ≥1.55 (+0.05–0.1 vs normal contrast)
- Body container `max-width: 65–75ch`, flag text blocks >80ch at desktop

## Phase 4: Hierarchy

- Clear display → heading → body → small hierarchy, not flat
- Varied weights (400/500/600/700), not all 600
- All-caps reserved for ≤6-word labels, not headlines

## Phase 5: Font-Loading

- `font-display: swap` for body, `optional` for display headings. `block` is a bug
- Preload only critical faces
- Subset display fonts rendering few characters
- Variable fonts preferred over 3+ weight files

## Phase 6: OpenType

- `tabular-nums` / `tnum` on numeric tables
- `onum` for body in editorial
- Ligatures / stylistic sets configured deliberately (not defaulted)

## Output

Use finding format from frontend-ui-reviewer. End with one-paragraph summary.

## Font-Selection Procedure (when replacing a reflex font)

1. Write the brief in 3 concrete words — NOT "modern" or "elegant"
2. List the 3 fonts you'd reflexively reach for (most will be banned)
3. Browse a catalog (Pangram Pangram, Future Fonts, ABC Dinamo, Klim, Velvetyne) with brief held as a physical object — a 1970s mainframe manual, a hand-painted sign, a coat label
4. Cross-check: "elegant" ≠ serif · "technical" ≠ sans · "warm" ≠ Fraunces. If your pick matches the reflex pattern, go back to step 3

## Hard Rules

- Never suggest a reflex font to replace another reflex font
- Always give a concrete replacement tied to the brand voice
- Frame findings as "off-brief for a <voice> product", not "looks bad"
