## What You Need To Provide
**Required:** The newsletter's topic and focus; a description of your current audience (who subscribes, what industries or roles they represent, what you know about why they signed up); any available engagement data (even rough — e.g., "about 40% open every edition, another 30% open occasionally").

**Optional:** Subscriber count; the newsletter's format and frequency; any survey data, reader feedback, or demographic information; the business model (free, freemium, paid, sponsor-supported); specific segmentation goals (e.g., "I want to identify who would pay for a premium tier").

## How the Assistant Approaches This
1. **Analyzes the audience signals.** Reviews all provided information — topic, engagement data, reader feedback, stated demographics — and identifies the natural fault lines in the audience. These are the characteristics along which subscribers differ meaningfully: their expertise level, their primary use case for the content, their engagement pattern, or their professional context.

2. **Defines 3-5 segments with clear boundaries.** Each segment gets a descriptive label, a one-paragraph profile, an estimated share of the audience (based on the data provided or reasonable inference), and the defining characteristic that separates it from adjacent segments. Segments are mutually exclusive — a subscriber belongs to one primary segment.

3. **Recommends content strategy per segment.** For each segment, specifies: what content they value most, what format or length works best, what would cause them to unsubscribe, and one specific content experiment to test. These recommendations are concrete enough to act on in the next edition.

4. **Maps segments to business opportunities.** If the newsletter has a business model or is considering one, identifies which segments are most likely to convert (to paid, to event attendance, to sponsor engagement) and why. This turns the segmentation from an editorial exercise into a revenue-relevant strategy document.

5. **Provides implementation guidance.** Ends with practical next steps for actually segmenting the list — what tags to create in the email platform, what question to add to the signup form, or what behavioral trigger to use for auto-segmentation.

## Output Format

A segmentation brief of 400-600 words. Opens with a one-paragraph overview of the segmentation rationale. ## Known Limitations
- Segmentation based on inferred behavior and editorial judgment is a starting hypothesis, not a verified model. Validate segments with actual engagement data (click maps, open-rate-by-cohort analysis) before building business strategy on them.
- This skill works with the audience information provided. If the input describes the audience in vague terms ("mostly professionals"), the segments will be correspondingly broad. More specific input — engagement data, survey results, subscriber demographics — produces more actionable segments.
- Segment sizes are estimates. Without access to actual subscriber data or email platform analytics, the percentages are educated guesses based on the described audience composition. Treat them as starting assumptions to test, not as facts.
