# OpTel Interpreter for AEM Edge Delivery Services

Interpret data from Adobe's Operational Telemetry (OpTel) Explorer — formerly known as RUM Explorer — and translate raw metrics into specific, actionable recommendations for AEM Edge Delivery Services sites. Analyzes Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP), traffic patterns, device and browser breakdowns, geographic distribution, and performance trends to help practitioners understand what is happening on their site and what to fix first.

## Context

### What Is OpTel Explorer?

Adobe rebranded RUM (Real User Monitoring) Explorer to Operational Telemetry Explorer in early 2025. The tool is available at `aem.live/tools/rum/explorer.html` and requires a domain key, which is provisioned when a site is onboarded to EDS. OpTel captures data from real user sessions — not synthetic tests — by injecting a lightweight sampling script into every EDS page. The data includes Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP), page view counts, traffic referrers, device types (mobile, desktop, tablet), browser types, geographic regions, and engagement signals.

### How OpTel Sampling Works

OpTel does not capture 100% of traffic. It uses a sampling rate that varies by site tier: typically 1-in-100 for high-traffic sites, with lower sampling ratios for smaller sites. This means the absolute numbers in OpTel are extrapolated — a page showing 5,000 views may have actually had 50 sampled sessions multiplied by the sampling rate. The relative proportions (e.g., "60% mobile, 40% desktop") are statistically valid, but small absolute numbers should be treated with caution. The sampling script adds negligible overhead (under 1KB, loaded in the delayed phase).

### CWV Thresholds in OpTel

OpTel follows Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds. For each metric, values are bucketed into three categories:
- **Good** (green): LCP < 2.5s, CLS < 0.1, INP < 200ms
- **Needs Improvement** (amber): LCP 2.5-4.0s, CLS 0.1-0.25, INP 200-500ms
- **Poor** (red): LCP > 4.0s, CLS > 0.25, INP > 500ms

The 75th percentile (p75) is the standard reporting percentile — this means 75% of user experiences are at or below the reported value. A p75 LCP of 2.8s means 75% of users see LCP at 2.8s or faster, but 25% see it slower.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a checklist of all steps to track progress:

## Step 1: Gather OpTel Access Details

Determine how the user is providing OpTel data. There are three common sources:

1. **OpTel Explorer UI** — The user shares screenshots or reads values from `aem.live/tools/rum/explorer.html`. Ask for the domain, date range, and which views they are looking at (overview, page-level, or filtered).
2. **Exported CSV/JSON** — The user has exported data from OpTel Explorer. Ask them to share the file or paste the contents.
3. **RUM API** — The user has queried the OpTel API programmatically. The base endpoint is `https://rum.hlx.page/`. Ask for the API response payload.

Record the **domain**, **date range**, and **sampling rate** (if known). If the sampling rate is not provided, note that absolute traffic numbers are estimates.

## Step 2: Pull CWV Summary

Extract or request the top-level Core Web Vitals summary for the site:

Also note:
- **Total page views** in the date range (with sampling caveat).
- **Percentage of pages passing all three CWV** — this is the "CWV pass rate." Google requires all three metrics to be "good" for a page to pass CWV assessment.
- **Trend direction** — Are metrics improving, stable, or degrading compared to the previous period?

If the user provides page-level data, identify the **top 5 worst pages** by each metric.

## Step 3: Analyze LCP Contributors

LCP is typically the most impactful metric. Break down the LCP data:

- **Distribution**: What percentage of page loads fall into good/needs-improvement/poor buckets?
- **Worst pages**: Which specific URLs have the highest p75 LCP? List the top 5.
- **Mobile vs. desktop**: Is LCP significantly worse on mobile? A gap of more than 1 second between mobile and desktop p75 LCP usually indicates image or resource loading issues exacerbated by slower mobile connections.
- **Common patterns**: In EDS, LCP issues almost always trace to one of these causes:
  - Hero images exceeding the 100KB LCP budget.
  - Too many blocks marked as eager loading.
  - Custom fonts blocking render.
  - Third-party scripts loading in the eager phase instead of delayed.

For each worst-performing page, note the likely cause based on the page type (homepage with hero image, product page with carousel, etc.).

## Step 4: Analyze CLS Sources

CLS problems on EDS sites have a distinct pattern. Analyze:

- **Distribution**: What percentage of page loads have CLS > 0.1?
- **Worst pages**: Which URLs have the highest p75 CLS?
- **Common EDS CLS sources**:
  - **Images without dimensions**: The `createOptimizedPicture()` function in `aem.js` historically generated `<picture>` elements without `width` and `height` attributes, causing layout shifts as images loaded. This was tracked as aem-lib issue #201 and has been fixed in recent versions, but older sites may still be affected.
  - **Late-loading consent banners**: Cookie consent banners that inject into the DOM after initial render push content down.
  - **Web font swaps**: Fonts loaded with `font-display: swap` cause a text reflow when the custom font replaces the fallback. Using `size-adjust` in the fallback font declaration mitigates this.
  - **Dynamic block decoration**: Blocks that modify their DOM structure during JavaScript decoration can cause shifts if the initial HTML layout differs from the decorated layout.

## Step 5: Analyze INP Patterns

INP (Interaction to Next Paint) measures responsiveness. Analyze:

- **Distribution**: What percentage of interactions have INP > 200ms?
- **Worst pages**: Which URLs have the highest p75 INP?
- **Interaction types**: If available, identify which interaction types are slowest (clicks, key presses, taps).
- **Common EDS INP sources**:
  - **Heavy block decoration JavaScript**: Blocks that perform complex DOM manipulation on user interaction (accordions, tabs, carousels) can cause long tasks.
  - **Synchronous layout reads**: JavaScript that reads layout properties (`offsetHeight`, `getBoundingClientRect()`) then writes to the DOM causes forced reflows.
  - **Third-party script interference**: Analytics or personalization scripts that add event listeners to every element can add latency to interactions.
  - **Large DOM size**: Pages with many blocks or deeply nested structures have slower DOM updates.

## Step 6: Review Device and Browser Breakdown

Analyze the traffic composition to understand the performance context:

- **Device split**: What percentage of traffic is mobile vs. desktop vs. tablet? EDS sites often see 60-70% mobile traffic. Mobile users typically have worse CWV due to slower connections and less powerful processors.
- **Browser distribution**: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge. Note that CWV data is primarily reported by Chromium-based browsers — Safari and Firefox do not report INP or CLS to the same degree, so OpTel data for those browsers may be incomplete.
- **Connection quality**: If available, note the distribution of connection types (4G, 3G, WiFi). High 3G traffic correlates with worse LCP.
- **Performance by device**: Compare CWV metrics across device types. If mobile LCP is significantly worse than desktop, the site likely has image or resource loading issues that disproportionately affect slower connections.

## Step 7: Identify Traffic Trends and Anomalies

Look for patterns in the traffic and performance data over time:

- **Traffic spikes**: Sudden increases in page views may correlate with marketing campaigns, social media mentions, or seasonal patterns. Spikes can also degrade CWV if the CDN cache is cold.
- **Performance regressions**: A sudden worsening of CWV metrics usually correlates with a code deployment. Check if the regression aligns with a known publish or release date.
- **Gradual degradation**: Slowly worsening metrics often indicate accumulating technical debt — more blocks added, more third-party scripts, larger images.
- **Geographic patterns**: If OpTel shows geographic data, check whether performance varies by region. Users far from CDN edge nodes may see worse TTFB, which impacts LCP.

## Step 8: Compare Against CWV Thresholds and Prioritize

Create a prioritized action list based on impact:

1. **Critical** (red metrics): Any CWV metric in the "poor" range. These directly affect search ranking and user experience.
2. **Warning** (amber metrics): Metrics in "needs improvement" — these are at risk of slipping into poor.
3. **Healthy** (green metrics): Metrics in the "good" range. Note these as maintained strengths.

For each non-green metric, pair it with the specific cause identified in Steps 3-5 and a concrete next action:

## Step 9: Generate Actionable Report

Produce a structured report with the following sections:

### Site Performance Summary
- Domain, date range, total estimated page views.
- Overall CWV pass rate (percentage of pages where all three metrics are "good").
- One-sentence health assessment.

### Core Web Vitals Scorecard
The table from Step 2 with trend arrows (improving/stable/degrading).

### Top Issues by Impact
Ranked list of the 3-5 most impactful findings, each with:
- The metric affected.
- The specific pages or page templates affected.
- The root cause.
- The recommended fix (reference `cwv-optimizer` for implementation details).
- Estimated improvement.

### Traffic Insights
Key findings from the device, browser, geographic, and trend analysis.

### Recommended Next Steps
A prioritized action plan with:
1. Quick wins (can fix this week).
2. Medium-term improvements (1-2 sprints).
3. Monitoring recommendations (what to watch going forward).

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **Interpret, do not just report.** Raw numbers are useless without context. Always explain what a metric means for the user's site and what action to take.
2. **Respect the sampling caveat.** OpTel data is sampled, not census. Small absolute numbers are unreliable — always note confidence levels and recommend wider date ranges when data is sparse.
3. **Prioritize by impact.** Not all CWV issues are equal. A "poor" LCP on the homepage affects more users than a "poor" INP on a rarely-visited FAQ page. Weight recommendations by traffic volume.
4. **Connect metrics to causes.** EDS has a known set of performance patterns. LCP issues almost always trace to the 100KB budget. CLS issues almost always trace to missing image dimensions or font swaps. INP issues almost always trace to block JavaScript. Use this domain knowledge.
5. **Recommend specific next steps.** Every finding should end with a concrete action, not a vague suggestion. Reference specific skills (`cwv-optimizer`, `performance-budget`) for implementation.
6. **Distinguish real regressions from noise.** A single bad day in OpTel data does not mean the site is broken. Look for sustained trends across multiple days or weeks before declaring a regression.
