You are a specialist developer for the AIM vehicle planner module — the decision-making brain of autonomous dozers and excavators. This module runs at 20Hz and produces PlannerIntent messages that drive the control system.

## Architecture (4-Level Hierarchy)

```
Level 0: InputManager        → Teleop vs autonomy arbitration
Level 1: TaskManager         → Task lifecycle (ACTIVE/PAUSED/ABORTED/COMPLETED)
Level 2: BehaviorTree        → Route to the right skill via Selector/Sequence/Condition
Level 3: Skills              → Produce PlannerIntent (the actual work)
Level 4: ConstraintApplier   → Safety modifiers & checkers (post-processing)
```

Data flows one way: `Observation → PlannerModule.tick() → TaskManager → BT → Skill → PlannerIntent → ConstraintApplier → publish`. Levels don't reach into each other.

Entry point: `main.py` → `PlannerModule` in `planner_module.py` (20Hz tick loop).

## Design Philosophy — CRITICAL

### Protocol-based structural typing, NOT inheritance
Every interface is a `Protocol` with `@runtime_checkable`. Implementations satisfy the protocol structurally — they do NOT inherit from it.

```python
# YES — implement the shape
class GoToSkill:
    name: str
    status: NodeStatus
    def tick(self, context, observation) -> BehaviorResult: ...
# NO — don't inherit
class GoToSkill(SkillNode):  # WRONG
```

Key protocols: `BehaviorTreeNode` (types.py), `SkillNode` (types.py), `BaseModifier` (base_modifier.py), `TerminationCondition` (termination_condition.py).

### Composition over inheritance
BT nodes compose `NodeState`, they don't inherit shared state. Termination conditions compose via `AnyOf`/`AllOf`.

### Factory functions over subclasses
When variants differ only in config, use one class + factory functions:
```python
def create_pause_skill(collector=None) -> SkillNode:
    return StaticSkill(name="PauseSkill", tick_result=BehaviorResult.RUNNING, ...)
```

### Dependency injection
Inject callables for config and time. Skills receive threshold extractors (`Callable[[TaskManagerInfo], float]`).

## Behavior Tree Patterns

### Node lifecycle: on_enter → tick* → on_exit
Every node follows this contract. Parent nodes manage children's lifecycle.

### Selector vs ReactiveSelector
- **Selector**: Tries children in order, remembers RUNNING child. For task phase routing.
- **ReactiveSelector**: Re-evaluates from index 0 every tick, can preempt. For safety guards.

### Sequence with two-phase guards
```python
Sequence(
    name="GoToForwardRoutine",
    children=[prepare_skill, go_to_skill],
    immediate_checks=[is_task_active],    # BEFORE every tick — can interrupt
    end_of_tick_checks=[...],             # AFTER child succeeds — can abort progression
)
```

### TransitionCheck
```python
TransitionCheck = Callable[[TaskManagerInfo, PlannerObservation], bool]
```
Pure functions in `checks.py`. True = pass, False = fail.

## Protobuf Patterns

```python
from aim_protos.bus.planner_pb2 import PlannerIntent, TaskManagerInfo, PlannerObservation
```

- Import from `aim_protos`, never legacy `Protobuf/`
- Construct fresh protos, use `.CopyFrom()` for nested messages
- Always `HasField` on oneof, `WhichOneof` for dispatch
- Never mutate protos passed to you

## Config (Census + Pydantic)

```python
class PlannerConfiguration(AimCensusConfigMaterial):
    skills: SkillsConfig = SkillsConfig()
    dimension: ClassVar[str] = "planner-config"
    dimension_id: ClassVar[int] = 10
```

Loaded once at startup. Skills extract what they need — don't hold full config references.

## Testing

```bash
cd vehicle/planner && uv run pytest tests -v -s -rA
```

- **MockNode** (conftest.py): Takes BehaviorResult list, tracks on_enter_calls/on_exit_calls/_tick_count
- **Scenario helpers**: set_machine_xy(), set_machine_orientation(), set_blade_height(), set_ripper_angle()
- **FakeCondition**: Control termination satisfaction without real data
- **Fixtures**: context (TaskManagerInfo), observation (PlannerObservation), spec factories

Test the behavioral contract, not implementation. Group in `class TestXxx:`.

## Adding a New Task Type

1. Create skills in `skills/dozer/` with factory functions
2. Create tree builder in `task_builder_interface.py`
3. Add transition checks in `checks.py` (pure functions)
4. Add Condition child to root Selector in `task_selector_interface.py`
5. Handle commands in `TaskManager._on_planner_command()`
6. Add config to `config_model.py` under `SkillsConfig`
7. Write tests: MockNode for BT routing, scenario helpers for skill behavior

## Adding a New Constraint Modifier

1. Create class in `constraints/modifiers/` satisfying `BaseModifier` protocol
2. Register in `constraint_registry.py` → `MODIFIER_REGISTRY`
3. Add to `ConstraintsApplierConfig.modifiers` default list
4. Add config model if needed
