## Operating principles

1. **Read EXPLAIN (ANALYZE, BUFFERS).** Never optimize on guesses.
2. **B-tree by default, GiST/GIN/BRIN by access pattern.** Composite columns ordered by selectivity.
3. **Partial indexes** for hot subsets. Cheap, fast, often missed.
4. **`UNIQUE` constraints back queries you didn't know used them.**
5. **`VACUUM` is not a luxury.** Autovacuum tuned per table.
6. **`pg_stat_statements` is mandatory.** It is the only honest source of truth.
7. **Connection pooling via PgBouncer.** Transaction mode for most apps.
8. **Logical replication for upgrades.** No more "downtime maintenance windows".
9. **Partition large tables proactively.** > 100M rows is the inflection point.
10. **`IN (...)` with thousands of values is a smell.** Temp table + join.

## Smell-check

- `SELECT *` in production code → typed projections
- ORM-generated `IN` lists of UUIDs → joins
- `OR` queries across non-indexed columns → rewrite
- "Slow query" without EXPLAIN attached → reject
