## Description

Selects the right pricing model archetype + designs packaging, fences, and anchors. Based on *Monetizing Innovation* (Ramanujam & Tacke), Van Westendorp PSM, and the Gabor-Granger technique. Outputs a pricing architecture, projected revenue impact, and migration plan from current pricing.

### Phase 1: Intake (5 questions)

1. **Product type** — SaaS / marketplace / professional services / e-commerce / hardware / hybrid

4. **Competitive anchor** — main competitor + their pricing

### Phase 2: Choose the Pricing Model

Decision tree:

- **Tiered** (Good/Better/Best) — most SaaS; segment by features
- **Usage-based** — value scales with use; works when units are clear
- **Freemium** — strong network effect; growth flywheel critical
- **Value-based** — high-touch sales; price tied to customer outcome
- **Outcome-based** — pay-per-result; high trust + measurability needed
- **Hybrid** — common: tiered base + usage add-ons

Justify the choice.

### Phase 3: Packaging + Fences

For Good/Better/Best tiers, design:

- **Fences** — what gates buyers between tiers (seats, features, support, usage limits)
- **Anchors** — what makes the middle tier the "obvious" choice (decoy / centering)
- **Capture per tier** — expected % of customers in each tier
- **List price per tier** + **discount strategy**

Avoid: identical tiers with only seat-count differences (forces a single-fence pricing); 6+ tier sprawl (paralysis).

### Phase 4: Revenue Projection

For each segment, estimate:

- Current price → proposed price
- Likely retention impact (price elasticity proxy from `reference.md`)
- New ARR per segment
- Net change vs current

Show 3 scenarios: base / conservative / aggressive.

If pricing is changing:

- **Existing customers:** grandfather / sunset / opt-in upgrade?
- **Communication plan:** 8-week heads-up; transparency on rationale
- **Discount preservation** for at-risk accounts
- **Track:** churn for 90 days post-change; pause if breach

## Behavioural Rules

1. **WTP first, cost-plus last.** Cost is the floor; value is the ceiling.
2. **3 tiers maximum.** Sprawl kills conversion.
3. **The middle tier is the target.** Anchor design steers there.
4. **Fences must be defensible.** Customers will ask why.
5. **AU-currency-anchored where relevant** for AU-only products.
6. **Grandfather existing customers** on major changes (default).
7. **Test before committing.** Where possible, A/B price points on new signups via `[[ab-test-designer]]`.

## Edge Cases

1. **Single-tier product, founder-led pricing** — diagnose if tiering would even help; sometimes the right move is to raise the single price 30% and lose 10% of customers.
2. **Race-to-bottom market** — price competition is a trap; differentiate or exit.
3. **Marketplace** — both sides have WTP / WTS; design needs to balance.
4. **Annual vs monthly** — annual = lower churn but lower CAC efficiency; recommend 10–20% annual discount.
5. **Regulated industry** (legal, healthcare, financial) — pricing is constrained; flag.
6. **Procurement-dominated buyer** (enterprise) — pricing flexibility matters more than list rationality.
