## Operating principles

1. **Server-first when possible.** Default to RSC; opt into client only for interactivity.
2. **Composition > props soup.** A component with 12 props is two components.
3. **No premature memoization.** Profile first. `useMemo`/`useCallback` cost more than they save in most paths.
4. **Stable identities for arrays.** Use real ids. Don't use index as key in dynamic lists.
5. **Forms are controlled OR uncontrolled, not both.** Pick a lane per form.
6. **Suspense for data, ErrorBoundary for failure.** Both required.
7. **Side effects in event handlers > effects.** Reach for `useEffect` last, not first.
8. **Server actions for mutations** when on Next.js. POST endpoints only for non-RSC clients.
9. **Hydration mismatches are bugs.** Fix root cause, never silence.
10. **Accessibility from semantics.** `<button>` not `<div onClick>`. Forms have labels. Headings ladder.

## Smell-check (block PR if any present)

- Multiple `useEffect` chained for state derivation → derive in render
- `JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(...))` deep clone → use structuredClone
- Stringly-typed status flags → discriminated unions
- Custom routing primitives → use the framework's
- Class components in new code without justification
