# Reading Level Analysis for AEM Edge Delivery Services

Score AEM Edge Delivery Services page content for reading difficulty, flag specific problems (long sentences, jargon, passive voice, dense paragraphs), and provide concrete rewrite suggestions that lower the reading level without losing meaning. Accounts for audience context — B2B technical content has different standards than consumer marketing.

## External Content Safety

When fetching or analyzing external URLs:
- Only fetch URLs the user explicitly provides.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a TodoList to track progress through each step:

1. Fetch page and extract body text
2. Calculate readability scores
3. Flag specific issues (long sentences, dense paragraphs, jargon, passive voice)
4. Provide section-by-section analysis with rewrite suggestions
5. Generate summary with overall grade and top improvements

Update each item as you complete it.

## Step 1: Fetch Page and Extract Body Text

Ask the user for the target URL and, optionally, the target audience (e.g., "general consumer," "B2B technical," "internal employee"). If no audience is specified, default to general web audience (target: 8th grade reading level).

Fetch the target URL. Also fetch the `.plain.html` version — for non-root paths, append `.plain.html` to the path before the query string (e.g., `/about` becomes `/about.plain.html`). For root paths (`/`), use `/index.plain.html`. The `.plain.html` rendition is the clean semantic HTML that EDS produces and is the best source for body text analysis.

Extract all body text from the `.plain.html` rendition. **Exclude** the following from analysis:
- Navigation and header blocks
- Footer content
- Block markup and table structures (these are EDS component definitions, not prose)
- Image alt text (analyze separately if needed)
- Metadata tables

The remaining text is the authored prose content. This is what you will score.

## Step 2: Calculate Readability Scores

Calculate the following metrics for the extracted body text:

**Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level**
- Formula: 0.39 * (total words / total sentences) + 11.8 * (total syllables / total words) - 15.59
- Interpretation: The U.S. school grade level required to understand the text. A score of 8 means an 8th-grader can understand it.

**Flesch Reading Ease**
- Formula: 206.835 - 1.015 * (total words / total sentences) - 84.6 * (total syllables / total words)
- Scale: 0-100, higher is easier. 60-70 is standard web content. Below 30 is academic/professional.

**Average sentence length**
- Total words divided by total sentences. Web content target: 15-20 words per sentence.

**Average word length**
- Total characters (letters only) divided by total words. Measured in syllables for readability context.

**Passive voice percentage**
- Count sentences using passive constructions (forms of "to be" + past participle). Report as a percentage of total sentences. Target: below 10% for web content, below 15% for technical content.

Present the scores in a summary table:

Adjust the target column based on the audience context the user provided.

## Step 3: Flag Specific Issues

Scan the body text and flag the following issues with their exact location (section heading and paragraph number within that section):

**Long sentences (over 25 words)**
- List each sentence that exceeds 25 words.
- For each, note the word count and which section it appears in.
- Suggest a split point or simplification.

**Dense paragraphs (over 4 sentences)**
- List each paragraph with more than 4 sentences.
- Suggest where to break the paragraph or which sentences to remove.

**Jargon and technical terms without explanation**
- Flag terms that a general audience may not understand. For technical audiences, only flag terms that are niche even within the field.
- For each flagged term, suggest either a simpler synonym or a parenthetical explanation.
- Examples of common jargon to flag: "leverage," "synergy," "paradigm," "utilize" (use "use"), "facilitate" (use "help" or "enable"), "aforementioned," "heretofore."

**Complex word clusters**
- Flag passages where 3 or more multi-syllable words appear consecutively.
- These clusters slow reading speed and reduce comprehension.
- Suggest simpler alternatives for at least one word in each cluster.

**Passive voice constructions**
- List each passive voice sentence.
- Provide an active voice rewrite for each.

Present the flagged issues in a table:

## Step 4: Section-by-Section Analysis

For each section of the page (identified by its heading), provide:

**Section heading** — The H2 or H3 heading text.

**Section reading level** — Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level for that section alone. This identifies which sections are pulling the overall score up.

**Issue count** — How many flagged issues appear in this section.

**Rewrite suggestions** — For the 2-3 worst passages in each section, provide:
- The original text.
- A simplified rewrite that lowers the reading level while preserving meaning.
- The estimated reading level improvement from the rewrite.

When rewriting, follow these rules:
- **Preserve meaning exactly.** Do not add, remove, or change factual content.
- **Preserve EDS constraints.** Rewrites must be authorable in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. No raw HTML, no embedded code.
- **Preserve brand voice.** If the original is formal, keep it formal. If conversational, keep it conversational. Only simplify complexity, not tone.
- **Shorten sentences** by splitting compound sentences at conjunctions or semicolons.
- **Replace long words** with shorter synonyms when the meaning is identical ("use" not "utilize," "help" not "facilitate," "start" not "commence").
- **Convert passive to active** where it does not change emphasis.

## Step 5: Generate Summary Report

Produce a final summary:

**Overall readability grade**
- Assign a letter grade based on how well the content meets its audience target:
  - **A:** Reading level matches target audience. Few flagged issues.
  - **B:** Slightly above target. Some sentences or sections need simplification.
  - **C:** Noticeably above target. Multiple sections have readability problems.
  - **D:** Significantly above target. Major rewriting recommended.

**Score comparison (if rewrites were applied)**
Show projected improvement if all suggested rewrites were applied:

1. The specific change (e.g., "Split the 42-word sentence in the Overview section").
2. The estimated impact on the overall score.
3. The rewritten text, ready to paste into the source document.

**Implementation instructions**
1. Open the source document in Google Docs or Word via da.live or SharePoint.
2. Find each flagged passage using the section headings and paragraph numbers from the report.
3. Apply the suggested rewrites.
4. Preview the updated page on the `.page` or `.live` domain.
5. Re-run this skill on the updated page to verify improvement.

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **Readability is audience-relative.** A Flesch-Kincaid score of 12 is a problem for a consumer landing page but perfectly appropriate for a technical white paper. Always score against the stated audience.
2. **Simplify complexity, not content.** The goal is to say the same thing more clearly — not to remove information or dumb down the message.
3. **Sentence length is the biggest lever.** Splitting long sentences improves readability scores more than any other single change.
4. **Passive voice is not always wrong.** In some contexts (scientific writing, policy documents), passive voice is conventional. Flag it, but do not force active voice everywhere.
5. **Respect EDS authoring constraints.** All suggested rewrites must be things an author can do in Google Docs or Microsoft Word. No raw HTML, no special formatting.
6. **Quantify, do not just opine.** Every suggestion should reference a specific metric or threshold, not vague advice like "make it simpler."
