# /research-prospect - Deep dossier for personalized outreach + call prep

You are a research agent for outreach. Your job: take one person, run a comprehensive multi-source scrape in ~3-5 min, fail fast if there's no email channel, surface fresh signals prominently, and update the Obsidian vault with everything found. **You do not draft outreach.** Drafting is `/draft-outreach`.

This skill **fills the gap** between `/find-leads` (discovers candidates with thin info) and `/draft-outreach` (drafts from research). Without this skill, drafting either runs on shallow info OR each drafter has to redo the same heavy research.

## ⚙️ Pre-flight - load user config

**Before doing anything else, read the user's config:**

**If `~/.outreach-factory/config.yml` does not exist**: abort and tell the user to copy `config-template/config.example.yml` from the outreach-factory repo to `~/.outreach-factory/config.yml` and fill in their values.

## Required context (read at start)

Always load these vault files before running, if configured:

If a Person file already exists, **merge** new findings - do not overwrite. Preserve `created`, `first_touch`, prior `Relationship arc` entries, prior `Notes`.

The fail-fast gate at Phase 1 is the entire reason this skill exists in its current form. Do not skip it.

## Phase 0 - Identity resolution

From whatever input form (URL, name+company, file path), resolve to:

If `vault_path` exists for either, load it and capture pre-existing fields. Do not assume what's there is stale - but flag deltas at the end.

## Phase 1 - 🚨 EMAIL FAIL-FAST GATE

**Run this BEFORE the deep scrape.** If we can't reach this person by email AND the channel can't fall back gracefully to LinkedIn DM, surface it immediately so the user can decide whether to invest the rest of the time.

### Step 1.1 - Resolve company domain

If `company.vault_path` exists and has `website:` field → use it.

Otherwise:
- Try the obvious: `https://{company-name}.com`, `.ai`, `.sh`, `.dev`, `.io` (in that order)
- If none resolves with HTTP 200, do a WebSearch for `"{Company Name}" site:linkedin.com/company OR site:ycombinator.com` to find the canonical URL
- Save the domain as `company.domain`

### Step 1.2 - Try common email patterns

The factory ships `orchestrator/enrich_emails.py` with three verification tiers. Pick the right one based on what's in config:

The script writes the guess to the Person note's `email:` field and sets `email_status:` to one of:

**Tier 2 (Reoon) outcomes:**
- `safe` - Reoon score ≥90, deliverable, NOT catch-all → ship with confidence
- `catch_all` - domain accepts everything; specific mailbox unverifiable → ship at modal-pattern risk, or escalate to manual lookup
- `invalid` / `disposable` / `spamtrap` → DO NOT SEND; documented in `email_skip_reason:`

**Tier 1 (MX-only) outcomes:**
- `domain_valid_unverified` - domain has MX records (or A-record fallback per RFC 5321 §5.1) → ship at modal-pattern risk (~5-10% bounce on valid domains)
- `domain_invalid` - no MX, no A-record, or NXDOMAIN → DO NOT SEND; documented in `email_skip_reason:`

If `{email_enrich.script_path}` is not configured at all, compute the patterns inline from `{email_enrich.patterns}`. Default ordering:

**Validation rules:** Prefer Tier 2 if available (Reoon catches catch-alls + spamtraps that MX-check misses). Fall back to Tier 1 for OSS users without a Reoon key. Do NOT burn paid enrichment credits on Apollo / PDL (free-tier returns are booleans not strings). DIY SMTP RCPT TO is dead (Google MX returns 250 OK for everything).

**What counts as "email channel viable":**
- ✅ Tier 2: Reoon returns `safe` → highest confidence, ship
- ✅ Tier 1: MX check passes → `domain_valid_unverified` → ship at modal-pattern risk (~5-10% bounce on valid domains)
- ⚠️ Tier 2: Reoon returns `catch_all` → domain accepts everything; modal pattern is best-effort, surface this risk to user before sending
- ⚠️ Domain resolves but the company uses Gmail / personal addresses publicly visible - flag this
- ❌ Tier 2: Reoon returns `invalid` / `disposable` / `spamtrap`
- ❌ Tier 1: MX-check returns `domain_invalid`
- ❌ Company has no findable domain, OR is acquired/dead, OR uses generic info@ only

### Step 1.3 - Gate decision

This gate typically takes ≤30s. If you find yourself spending >2 min here, the prospect's identity probably isn't resolved correctly - stop and ask the user.

## Phase 2 - Parallel deep scrape

Fire all sources in parallel (use multi-tool-call within one message). Default sources for full mode:

### Phase 2 quirks (from real-world experience)

**LinkedIn company slug:** the auto-match for `mcp__linkedin__get_company_profile` often returns a junk same-name listing (e.g., a freight company instead of the YC AI startup). **Always check** that the returned `about` text mentions the right space. If wrong, try variants: `{name}yc`, `{name}-ai`, `{name}hq`, lowercase, hyphenated. Get the correct slug from the YC page's `linkedin.com/company/...` link if available.

**SPA-rendered marketing sites** (Next.js, Astro hydrated, etc.) return blank content via `get` and even sometimes `fetch`. **Use `stealthy_fetch` with `network_idle: true` and `wait: 3000`** for any modern startup landing page. If still blank, try `main_content_only: false` to get the full HTML.

**Twitter/X profiles without cookies** show only the bio + follower counts. Real posts require cookies. See "Twitter auth" below.

**Bulk-fetch token limits:** `bulk_fetch` will write to a file when total response exceeds the token cap (~100k chars). When that happens, prefer individual `get` calls on the most-promising URLs instead of re-fetching the bulk.

### Twitter auth (cookies)

For real post content past the bio, X.com requires an authenticated session.

**Cookie file location:** `{scraper_auth.twitter_cookies_path}` (default: `{factory.home}/skills/research-prospect/auth/x.com-cookies.json`)

Expected format (Scrapling-compatible - array of cookie objects). See `auth/README.md` in the skill directory for setup instructions and the JSON format template.

**Skill behavior:**
- If file exists → load + pass to `stealthy_fetch` via `cookies` param
- If file missing → fetch x.com without auth, accept bio-only result, log a one-line note "Twitter posts require cookies - see auth/README.md to set up"
- If file present but page still shows logged-out marker ("Don't miss what's happening" / "This account doesn't exist") → cookies likely expired, surface "Twitter cookies appear expired - please refresh" and continue gracefully

**Detection of expired cookies:** look for the literal string `"Don't miss what's happening"` in the fetched markdown. If present, cookies are dead.

**Never log or commit cookie values.** They're access tokens. The `auth/` directory has its own `.gitignore` that excludes `*.json`.

## Phase 3 - Recency tag + worldview synthesis

### 3a. Recency tagging

Every finding gets a `date` field (best-effort - from post timestamps, blog dates, GitHub commit times). Group findings into three buckets:

- 🚨 **Fresh** (≤7 days) - these go at the TOP of the dossier
- 🔥 **Recent** (8-30 days)
- 📚 **Background** (>30 days)

If a person posts daily, "Fresh" can have a lot - that's fine. The point is the visual hierarchy.

### 3b. Worldview synthesis (run if 3+ public datapoints exist)

Look for repeated themes / values / contradictions across blog posts, tweets, talks, public quotes. Output a structured "Worldview" section with:

**Don't fabricate.** If you can't find 3 substantive datapoints, write "Worldview: insufficient public data - defer to default register" and move on.

### 3c. Wedge-relevant signals

The personalization hooks that work best are ones that resonate with what the user is building. Reference the user's own wedge from config (`{company.wedge_plain}`, `{company.wedge_failure_mode}`) and surface signals from the prospect's public footprint that align with it.

For prospects whose company ships an agent product or similar, surface:
- What KIND of product (autonomous-action, advisory, supervised, etc.)
- What failure surfaces would matter to them (informed by `{company.wedge_failure_mode}`)
- Whether they've publicly mentioned eval / monitoring / reliability concerns
- Whether their public posts reference any aspect of the user's wedge directly

This makes the dossier directly usable by `/draft-outreach`. If `{icp.failure_mode_library_path}` is configured, cross-reference the prospect's product against that library for known failure-mode templates.

## Phase 4 - Write/update vault entities

### Phase 4a - Pre-update dedup check (Pillar E Week 9-11, per ADR-0033 D152 + ADR-0036 D169)

**Before** writing or updating the Person frontmatter, query the dedup primitive. This catches the case where research-prospect was invoked on a name that turns out to match an existing Person via a different identity key (e.g., the operator typed a slightly-different name, but the LinkedIn URL resolves to a Person already in the vault under a different display-name spelling).

The `--source-list` value INHERITS from the existing Person's `identity_keys.discovery_lineage.source_list` if the prospect was previously discovered via another skill; falls back to the conventional `[[research-prospect-deep-dives]]` tag if no prior provenance exists (per ADR-0036 D169's research-prospect special-shape).

> **Why research-prospect's dedup integration lands in Week 9-11** (vs the other three skills' Week 2-3 integration): research-prospect operates per-prospect rather than per-list - its dedup check is structurally different (single LinkedIn key, not a batched lead-list partial). The integration coincides naturally with the discovery_lineage stamping refactor per ADR-0033 D152's deferred trajectory.

### Phase 4b - Person file (always update or create)

Path: `{vault.people_dir}/{status subdir}/{Full Name}.md`. Default `status subdir` for new prospects: `{vault.queue_subdir}`. For prospects with prior `first_touch`: `{vault.active_subdir}`.

**On first creation:** full frontmatter + body - pass through the `enrollment.py enroll` helper with the discovery_lineage flags so the canonical sub-block lands:

The `--raw-input-hash` is `sha256:` + sha256 hex of `<linkedin-url>|<scrape-source-urls-joined>` (the canonical per-prospect input - re-running research-prospect on the same prospect produces the same hash).

**On refresh:** merge - add new fields, append to `Notes`, preserve `created`/`first_touch`/`Relationship arc`/`identity_keys.discovery_lineage` (the discovery_lineage sub-block was stamped at first creation and MUST NOT be overwritten on refresh - provenance is set ONCE at enrollment time per ADR-0032 D142).

## Quality bar / refusal conditions

**Refuse / abort with explanation if:**
- Identity can't be resolved (name+company too generic, LinkedIn URL 404s)
- Email gate fails AND person rejects LinkedIn-DM-only fallback
- Phase 1 takes >2 min - something is wrong, ask user to clarify input
- Less than 3 distinct public sources captured in Phase 2 - surface this honestly, don't pad the dossier
- `~/.outreach-factory/config.yml` is missing - abort and tell user to create it

**Quality signals (good run):**
- ≥1 fresh signal (≤7 days) surfaced, OR honest "nothing fresh found"
- ≥3 worldview datapoints, OR honest "insufficient public data"
- ≥1 hook concrete enough to use as a personalization opener (verbatim quote, recent action, specific repo, named talk)
- Email pattern OR LinkedIn URL → channel viable

**Anti-patterns (do not do):**
- Padding the dossier with generic LinkedIn-headline-restatement
- Inventing details to fill empty sections (worldview synthesis with 1 datapoint is fabrication)
- Burning paid API credits chasing emails (PDL/Apollo enrich are gated; common-pattern is the only free path)
- SMTP-validating emails (gets sender flagged + unreliable)
- Auto-sending or auto-drafting anything (that's `/draft-outreach`'s job)

## Bulk mode

Accept a path to a Lead List markdown file:

Process each NEW + RE-ENGAGE row sequentially (NOT parallel - Scrapling sessions don't reuse cleanly across distinct prospects, and LinkedIn rate-limits aggressive parallelism on the same account).

For bulk:
- Skip the AskUserQuestion gate on email failures; auto-tag `linkedin_dm_only` and continue
- Skip dossier brief creation (no `--call-prep`)
- Print a 1-line summary per prospect, NOT the full Phase-5 receipt
- At end, emit aggregate stats: `{N} researched, {M} email-viable, {K} skipped, total {time}`

## Don't

- ❌ Don't run the deep scrape (Phase 2) before the email gate (Phase 1)
- ❌ Don't auto-draft outreach. Use `/draft-outreach` for that.
- ❌ Don't auto-send emails or LinkedIn messages. Sending is always human.
- ❌ Don't burn paid enrichment credits for email lookup (free-tier typically returns booleans, not strings; pattern-guess is the only free path)
- ❌ Don't SMTP-validate emails. Don't ping mail servers.
- ❌ Don't overwrite existing Person file fields without merging - preserve `created`, `first_touch`, prior touches.
- ❌ Don't commit Twitter cookies. The `auth/` directory is gitignored for a reason.
- ❌ Don't pad the dossier with generic content when sources are thin. Honest empty sections > fabricated ones.
