## Context

AEM Edge Delivery Services sites are built on a performance-first architecture that delivers near-perfect Lighthouse scores out of the box. The EDS CDN, three-phase loading model (Eager-Lazy-Delayed), and automatic image optimization through the media pipeline mean that a properly implemented EDS site should consistently score 90+ on all four Lighthouse categories. When scores fall below that baseline, it signals implementation issues — not platform limitations.

Adobe provides raw data through several disconnected tools: OpTel Explorer (formerly RUM Explorer) surfaces real user metrics like Core Web Vitals from field data, Sites Optimizer generates audit findings and recommendations, Google Search Console provides SEO visibility data, and PageSpeed Insights runs Lighthouse for lab-based performance scores. But there is no unified report generator. Partners must manually combine data from four or five tools, normalize the metrics, and format them into a client-facing presentation. This skill automates that aggregation.

The report should reference EDS-specific benchmarks rather than generic web standards. An EDS site with a Lighthouse performance score of 75 has a problem — that same score on a traditional CMS might be considered good. The near-100 Lighthouse baseline, 100KB LCP budget, and built-in accessibility features set a higher bar. The report should contextualize findings against what EDS makes possible, not against industry averages.

## Step 0: Create Todo List

Before starting, create a checklist to track progress through the report generation:

- [ ] Gather site URL, reporting period, and key pages to audit
- [ ] Run PageSpeed Insights for mobile and desktop on key pages
- [ ] Fetch and analyze page content for SEO signals (titles, descriptions, headings, structured data)
- [ ] Run accessibility checks (alt text, heading hierarchy, link text, ARIA, contrast)
- [ ] Check content freshness via Last-Modified headers across key pages
- [ ] Audit security headers and HTTPS configuration
- [ ] Compile findings into category scores
- [ ] Calculate composite site health score
- [ ] Generate executive summary and prioritized recommendations
- [ ] Produce the full structured report

## Step 1: Gather Inputs and Identify Key Pages

Collect the following from the user:

- **Site URL** — the production domain (e.g., `https://www.example.com`).
- **Reporting period** — the timeframe this report covers (e.g., "Q1 2026" or "May 2026").
- **Key pages** — the pages to include in the audit. If the user does not specify, default to:
  1. Homepage (`/`)
  2. Top 3-5 landing pages or service pages
  3. Contact or conversion page
  4. Blog or resource page (if applicable)

Fetch the sitemap at `https://{domain}/sitemap.xml` to understand site scope. Record the total number of pages in the sitemap — this contextualizes the audit sample size.

Also check whether the site is served from the EDS CDN by inspecting response headers on the homepage. Look for EDS-specific headers (`x-cdn`, `x-aem-*`, or `server` headers indicating the Fastly/EDS CDN). If the site does not appear to be an EDS site, warn the user and proceed with caveats.

## Step 2: Performance Analysis (Core Web Vitals)

For each key page, run a PageSpeed Insights analysis for both mobile and desktop. Use the PageSpeed Insights API or fetch the results URL:

Record the following metrics for each page:

### Lighthouse Scores
- **Performance** — target: 90+. EDS baseline is near-100.
- **Accessibility** — target: 90+.
- **Best Practices** — target: 90+.
- **SEO** — target: 90+.

### Core Web Vitals (Lab Data)
- **LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)** — good: under 2.5s. EDS target: under 1.5s.
- **CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)** — good: under 0.1. EDS target: under 0.05.
- **INP (Interaction to Next Paint)** — good: under 200ms.

### EDS-Specific Performance Checks
- **LCP image loading** — is the LCP image using `loading="eager"` and `fetchpriority="high"`? Lazy-loading the LCP candidate is a critical issue in EDS.
- **Third-party script placement** — are analytics and other third-party scripts in `delayed.js` (loading 3+ seconds after LCP)? Scripts in `<head>` are a major EDS anti-pattern.
- **Font loading** — are fonts loaded via `@font-face` with `font-display: swap` and `size-adjust` fallbacks? Preloaded fonts are an EDS anti-pattern.

Compile a performance summary table across all audited pages.

## Step 3: SEO Analysis

For each key page, fetch the published HTML and analyze SEO signals:

### On-Page SEO Factors
- **Title tag** — present, 50-60 characters, unique per page. Missing or duplicate titles are high-priority.
- **Meta description** — present, 150-160 characters, unique per page. Missing descriptions are medium-priority.
- **H1 tag** — exactly one per page, descriptive, relates to the title tag.
- **Heading hierarchy** — logical nesting (H1 > H2 > H3), no skipped levels.
- **Canonical URL** — `<link rel="canonical">` present and pointing to the production domain (not `.aem.live` or `.aem.page`).
- **Open Graph tags** — `og:title`, `og:description`, `og:image` present for social sharing.

### Technical SEO
- **robots.txt** — fetch `https://{domain}/robots.txt`. Verify production is not blocking crawlers. Check for `Sitemap:` directive.
- **Sitemap** — `sitemap.xml` exists, is valid, and contains the expected pages. Check for pages in the sitemap that return 404.
- **URL structure** — clean, lowercase, no `.html` extensions, no trailing slashes. EDS enforces extensionless URLs natively.
- **Internal linking** — spot-check that key pages link to each other. Orphan pages with no internal links are flagged.

### Structured Data
- Check for JSON-LD on the homepage (Organization, WebSite schema). Check article pages for Article schema. Missing structured data where it would benefit the page is a recommendation.

## Step 4: Accessibility Assessment

For each key page, check accessibility against WCAG 2.1 AA standards, focusing on issues detectable via HTML analysis:

### Image Accessibility
- Every `<img>` has an `alt` attribute. Missing `alt` is critical.
- Decorative images use `alt=""` (empty), not a missing attribute.
- Alt text is meaningful — not filename-based (e.g., "IMG_2034.jpg") or generic ("image", "photo").

### Heading Structure
- Logical heading hierarchy with no skipped levels.
- Exactly one H1 per page.

### Link Accessibility
- No "click here", "read more", or bare URL link text. Links must be understandable out of context.
- Adjacent links to the same destination should be combined into a single anchor.

### Color and Contrast
- Check CSS custom properties for foreground/background color pairs. Flag combinations that may not meet WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text).

### Language and Navigation
- `<html lang="...">` attribute present and correct.
- Skip-to-content link available in the navigation.

### EDS Button Pattern
- EDS buttons use the strong/em wrapper pattern in authored content. Verify buttons follow this convention rather than custom HTML.

## Step 5: Content Freshness Check

For each key page, check content freshness by examining HTTP headers:

### Last-Modified Headers
- Fetch each page with a HEAD request and record the `Last-Modified` header value.
- Calculate the age of each page (days since last modification).
- Flag pages not updated in over 90 days as "stale" and pages not updated in over 180 days as "very stale."

### Freshness Summary
- Categorize pages: **Fresh** (under 30 days), **Current** (30-90 days), **Stale** (90-180 days), **Very stale** (180+ days).
- Calculate the percentage of audited pages in each category. Identify the oldest and most recently updated pages.
- Note: `Last-Modified` reflects the last publish date, not necessarily the last content edit. Some pages (like "About Us") may be intentionally stable.

## Step 6: Security and Configuration Audit

Fetch response headers from the homepage and check security configuration:

### HTTPS
- Site is served over HTTPS. HTTP requests redirect to HTTPS. Missing HTTPS is critical.

### Security Headers
- **Strict-Transport-Security (HSTS)** — present. Missing is a recommendation.
- **X-Content-Type-Options** — should be `nosniff`. Missing is a recommendation.
- **X-Frame-Options** or **Content-Security-Policy frame-ancestors** — present to prevent clickjacking. Missing is a recommendation.
- **Referrer-Policy** — present with an appropriate value. Missing is informational.

### EDS Configuration
- **CDN headers** — verify the site is served through the EDS CDN. Check for EDS-specific response headers.
- **Cache-Control** — static assets should have appropriate cache durations. HTML should have short or no-cache for content freshness.
- **x-robots-tag** — verify the production domain does not have `noindex` set at the CDN level.

## Step 7: Compile Category Scores

Calculate a score (0-100) for each category based on findings:

### Scoring Methodology
- **Performance (30% weight)** — based on average Lighthouse performance score across audited pages, adjusted for EDS-specific checks (LCP loading, E-L-D compliance, font loading). Deduct 10 points for each critical EDS anti-pattern (lazy LCP, eager third-party scripts).
- **SEO (25% weight)** — based on metadata completeness, technical SEO factors, and structured data presence. Deduct 5 points per page missing title or description, 10 points for robots.txt blocking crawlers.
- **Accessibility (20% weight)** — based on Lighthouse accessibility score and manual checks. Deduct 5 points per missing alt text, 3 points per heading hierarchy violation.
- **Content Freshness (15% weight)** — based on the percentage of pages that are fresh or current. 100% fresh/current = 100 points. Each stale page deducts proportionally.
- **Security (10% weight)** — based on HTTPS, security headers, and CDN configuration. Full marks for HTTPS + all recommended headers.

### Composite Score
- Calculate a weighted composite: `(Performance * 0.30) + (SEO * 0.25) + (Accessibility * 0.20) + (Freshness * 0.15) + (Security * 0.10)`.
- Grade: A (90-100), B (80-89), C (70-79), D (60-69), F (below 60).

## Step 8: Generate Executive Summary

Write a 3-5 sentence executive summary covering:

1. The overall site health grade and composite score.
2. The strongest category (highest score) and what it means for the business.
3. The weakest category (lowest score) and the top risk it poses.
4. The single highest-impact recommendation.

The executive summary should be written for a non-technical audience. Avoid jargon. Translate technical findings into business impact: "Pages load in under 1.5 seconds on mobile, which is in the top 5% of websites globally and directly supports higher search rankings and conversion rates."

## Step 9: Generate Full Structured Report

Produce the complete report in the following structure:

- Site URL, reporting period, date generated, number of pages audited.

- From Step 8.

2. Summary of findings (2-3 sentences).

Top 5 recommendations sorted by impact, with:
- What to fix.
- Why it matters (business impact).
- How to fix it (specific steps an EDS author or developer can take).
- Estimated effort (quick win / moderate / significant).

### Appendix: Page-Level Details
For each audited page, a row with: URL, Lighthouse scores (mobile), LCP value, title length, description length, freshness date, issues found.

## Troubleshooting

## Key Principles

1. **Client-ready means non-technical.** The executive summary and recommendations must be understandable by a marketing director or VP. Translate LCP milliseconds into "page load speed" and Lighthouse scores into letter grades.
2. **Benchmark against EDS, not the web.** An EDS site scoring 75 on Lighthouse performance has a problem. A WordPress site scoring 75 is doing well. Always contextualize scores against what EDS makes possible — near-100 is the baseline.
3. **Prioritize by business impact.** A missing meta description on the homepage matters more than a missing alt text on a blog post image. Weight recommendations by traffic and conversion importance.
4. **One report, multiple audiences.** The executive summary serves leadership, the category details serve the marketing team, and the appendix serves the development team. Structure the report so each audience can find their section.
5. **Data over opinions.** Every finding should reference a specific metric, URL, or header value. Avoid subjective assessments without supporting data.
6. **Freshness is a signal, not a rule.** A 180-day-old "About Us" page is not necessarily stale. Contextualize freshness findings — flag them for review, do not automatically mark them as failures.
