# Storage, Preservation & Conservation — Material Is Destiny

## The Core Insight

Material is destiny. Paper hates humidity swings. Wine hates heat. Watches need movement. Oil paintings need stable RH or the canvas tensions cycle and the paint film cracks. Cards need archival sleeves and dark storage. Vinyl needs vertical storage and anti-static. Photographs need cold storage for color film and <40% RH for everything.

The principles converge across materials: stable climate, no UV, archival contact materials, no pests, no fire/water risk. The implementation differs by material; the discipline is universal.

## The Numbers Every Collector Should Know

### Temperature

- **Museum default target:** 35–65°F (1.5–18°C)
- **Society of American Archivists narrower band:** 60–70°F (15–21°C)
- **Wine cellar target:** 50–59°F (10–15°C), stable
- **Photographic cold storage** (color film): below 40°F (4.5°C); freezer-grade for long-term
- **Avoid:** anything above 75°F (24°C) for long-term; cycling above and below dew point ever

### Relative Humidity (RH)

- **Museum default target:** 30–50% RH
- **Paper / books / cards / comics:** 45–55% RH (drier than wine, wetter than electronics)
- **Wine cellar:** 60–70% RH (high enough to keep corks pliable)
- **Photographs:** <40% RH; <30% for very long term
- **Watches:** <60% RH (humid air corrodes movements)

The killer is not the absolute level — it is the swing. RH cycling from 40% to 60% and back over a 24-hour cycle does more damage than steady 70%.

### Light

- **UV threshold for display:** under 75 µW/lumen, ideally filtered to near-zero
- **Visible light:** measured in lux-hours per year; rotation, low-UV LEDs, and seasonal display are museum-standard
- **Direct sunlight is the enemy** — even ten minutes of direct sun a day for a year will fade dye-based prints, age paper, and crack watch dial lume
- **Window film** with UV-blocking coating is a low-cost first-line measure

## Archival Materials — The Vocabulary

The materials that actually touch the collection must be chemically inert. Anything that off-gasses corrosive volatiles destroys the object slowly.

- **Mylar D / Melinex 516** (polyester) — the gold standard for paper, cards, comics, photographs. Chemically inert, optically clear, archival-grade.
- **Polypropylene** — second-tier; acceptable for many uses; check for "archival" certification.
- **Polyethylene** — generally inert; used in bags and sleeves.
- **PVC** — **never** for collectibles. Off-gasses hydrochloric acid; embrittles and yellows; can fuse to inks and surfaces. Old "vinyl" album sleeves are PVC; replace immediately.
- **Acid-free, lignin-free buffered board** — for matting, boxing, mounting. The buffering (calcium carbonate) neutralizes acid migration from the environment.
- **Museum-grade matting** — separate the work from the glazing; prevents condensation contact.
- **Volara foam** — closed-cell polyethylene foam for cushioning; archival-grade.
- **Tyvek** — for wrapping textiles, photographs in long-term storage; vapor-permeable but waterproof.

### The Oddy Test and PAT

When materials will sit in contact with a collection for years, two accelerated-aging tests determine whether they're safe:

- **Oddy Test** (developed by Andrew Oddy at the British Museum, 1973) — three-month accelerated aging assay using copper, silver, and lead coupons in a sealed jar with the material being tested, at high temperature and humidity. If the coupons tarnish, the material off-gasses corrosives and fails.
- **Photographic Activity Test (PAT, ISO 18916)** — specifically for materials touching photographs. Tests for image-degrading compounds (peroxides, sulfides).

The Image Permanence Institute publishes a database of Oddy-tested and PAT-passed materials. Major suppliers (Talas, Gaylord Archival, University Products) carry the certified-archival lines.

## Material-Specific Storage

### Comics

- Mylar D bag + acid-free buffered backing board (the "bag and board" standard)
- "Comic-saver" boxes (acid-free cardboard, lid-fitted) or for high-value items, museum-grade short boxes
- Vertical storage, slightly compressed (no flop, no over-compression)
- CGC-slabbed copies: stack flat, no more than 10 high; keep in original CGC sleeves to prevent label rub
- Climate: 65–70°F, 45–55% RH, dark storage

### Trading Cards

- Penny sleeve + top loader for raw cards; semi-rigid for higher-value raw cards
- Magnetic case (one-touch) for premium raw cards
- For graded slabs: original capsule + slab box (8-card "card saver" or shoebox-style for collections)
- Climate: 65–70°F, 45–55% RH, dark storage
- Avoid storage above lifestyle items (laundry rooms, basements with humidity issues, attics)

### Paintings (Framed)

- Vertical storage on padded racks, never stacked
- Glazing (UV-filtering acrylic or museum glass) is standard
- Backing board (Coroplast or acid-free) on the verso
- Climate: 65–70°F, 45–55% RH; stability matters more than absolute level
- Hang on interior walls only, away from exterior walls that swing in temperature

### Wine

- 50–59°F, 60–70% RH, stable
- Bottles on their side (cork wet)
- Darkness (UV degrades wine via reaction with riboflavin)
- Vibration-free (compressor-cooled cellars need anti-vibration mounts)
- For investment-grade bottles: bonded storage (London City Bond, Octavian, EHD) preserves provenance, defers VAT, and provides insurance

### Watches

- Watch winder (for automatic movements; not strictly necessary but reduces servicing intervals)
- Climate-controlled safe; humidity-controlled case for vintage
- Original boxes and papers stored adjacent (often in a separate fire-rated safe)
- Service every 5–7 years for vintage; per manufacturer for modern

### Coins

- Air-tite holders (inert plastic) for raw coins; original slab for graded
- Anti-tarnish strips in coin cabinets (for silver and copper)
- Climate: stable, low humidity (<45%)
- **Never clean coins** — the value penalty is catastrophic

### Books

- Vertical shelving, supported by appropriate bookends (no leaning)
- Mylar D dust jacket protectors for first editions
- Acid-free slipcase for high-value items
- Climate: 65–70°F, 45–55% RH
- Avoid sunlight on spines (fading is irreversible)

### Vinyl Records

- Vertical storage (never stack flat — warping)
- Inner sleeve: anti-static, paper-free
- Outer sleeve: archival polyethylene
- Climate: 65–70°F, <55% RH
- Play with quality equipment; "playing-graded" is real (NM-looking records can have audible noise from prior cheap-stylus play)

## Conservation vs. Restoration

The two words mean very different things in conservation ethics.

- **Conservation** — stabilize the existing material, halt degradation, document everything. Reversible interventions only. Museum doctrine: "Don't touch it" is the default.
- **Restoration** — return the object to a perceived earlier state. Adds material; alters appearance. Sometimes acceptable in commercial markets (watches, cars), almost never acceptable in fine art / paper / coin markets without full disclosure.

The collector's rule: if you don't know how to do it, don't. A conservator with a graduate degree from a recognized program (NYU Conservation, Buffalo State, Winterthur, Queen's, Northumbria) and AIC membership is the only person who should ever apply solvent, adhesive, or instrument to a serious piece. The cost of professional conservation is far less than the value destruction of amateur intervention.

## Freeports — When Home Storage Stops Being Enough

For collections above ~$1M in concentrated value, dedicated storage becomes worth the cost.

Freeports defer import duties until physical clearance into a destination jurisdiction. They are not tax evasion (the obligation crystallizes on import, not on storage). They are bonded warehouses with conservation-grade climate control, security, and (importantly) a specialized handling chain — Brink's / Gander & White / Crozier / Dietl trained crew.

The cost: typically $20–60 per square foot per year, plus handling and insurance. Above ~$1M of art, the math is straightforward; below, home storage with proper climate control and a true fine arts policy is usually cheaper.

## Pest Management

Insects and rodents destroy collections invisibly until the damage is catastrophic.

- **Silverfish** — eat starch sizing in paper; signs are small chewed edges and silvery scales
- **Booklice / psocids** — feed on mold in damp environments; treat by drying the space
- **Carpet beetles** — feed on wool, silk, feathers, leather; check textile collections
- **Mice** — chew everything; their urine ruins paper permanently; bait stations and exclusion are first line
- **Termites** — wood-substrate art and frames; annual inspection in termite-prevalent regions

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the museum-standard discipline: monitor with sticky traps, identify pests, identify entry points, eliminate food and moisture sources, treat targeted not broad-spectrum.

Connoisseur ─── A Collection Survives Through the Discipline of Boredom

The most important storage practice is the boring one. The 70°F basement at steady 50% RH with a $200 dehumidifier and a hygrometer checked once a week beats the $50K climate vault that was installed but never calibrated. Cards in sleeves and toploaders in a closet bin beat cards in a fancy display case in a humid sunroom. Look at any collection that has survived 30 years in great condition and the common factor is not money — it is steady, unromantic attention to climate and contact materials.

Allocator ─── Storage Cost Is a Negative Yield You Must Account For

A wine cellar at $30/case/year, scaled to a 100-case collection over 20 years, is $60,000 of cumulative storage cost. A freeport at $50/sq ft for a 200 sq ft cage is $10K/year, $200K/20 years. Insurance adds 0.10–0.50% of value annually. Storage and insurance compound; on a 25-year hold of an asset that doubles, you may have spent 30–60% of the gross gain on storage drag. The illiquidity premium has to clear this hurdle before realized return turns positive. The collector who skips a budget for storage is implicitly betting on capital appreciation that exceeds the unmodeled drag — usually a bad bet.
