## Context: Adobe Commerce on Edge Delivery Services

Adobe Commerce on EDS (sometimes called "Commerce Storefront powered by Edge Delivery Services") is a headless commerce architecture. The storefront is an EDS site that fetches product data from Adobe Commerce via the Catalog Service GraphQL API, rendering product information client-side using specialized commerce blocks.

The architecture has three key layers:

1. **Commerce Site Creator** — A tool at `tools.aem.live` that scaffolds an EDS project pre-configured for commerce. It creates a GitHub repository with the commerce boilerplate, sets up the connection to an Adobe Commerce instance, and configures the project structure. This replaces the standard EDS boilerplate setup for commerce projects.

2. **Commerce Boilerplate** — An extension of the standard EDS boilerplate (`aem-boilerplate`) that adds commerce-specific blocks, dropin components, and API integration code. Key additions include product blocks (PDP, PLP), cart and checkout flows, and the Catalog Service client. The boilerplate lives on GitHub and follows the same branch-preview-publish workflow as standard EDS.

3. **Dropin Components** — Pre-built, customizable UI components provided by Adobe for common commerce patterns: product detail displays, product cards, cart overlays, checkout forms, and account management. These are distributed as npm packages (`@dropins/storefront-*`) and are designed to be styled with CSS custom properties while maintaining consistent commerce logic.

Product pages in EDS commerce are fundamentally different from standard EDS content pages. Standard EDS pages are authored in Google Docs or SharePoint and rendered from that content. Commerce product pages are **route-based**: the PDP block intercepts URLs matching a product pattern (e.g., `/products/blue-jacket`), extracts the product identifier from the URL, queries the Catalog Service API, and renders the product detail dynamically. The page content in the source document serves as a template — it contains the PDP block declaration but not the actual product data.

## Step 1: Gather Commerce Requirements

Collect the following information before scaffolding:

### Adobe Commerce Instance
- **Commerce URL** — The Adobe Commerce admin URL (e.g., `https://commerce.example.com/admin`).
- **Environment** — Production, staging, or development. Start with staging.
- **Catalog Service status** — Confirm Catalog Service is enabled and SaaS data export is configured. The Catalog Service requires Adobe Commerce 2.4.4+ with the `magento/module-catalog-service` module.
- **Store view code** — The store view to use for catalog data (e.g., `default`, `en_us`).

### API Credentials
- **Catalog Service API key** — Also called the "API mesh key" or "Commerce Services API key." This is configured in the Adobe Commerce admin under Stores > Configuration > Services > Commerce Services Connector.
- **Environment ID** — The SaaS environment ID for Catalog Service (found in Commerce admin under Services > Commerce Services Connector).
- **Catalog Service endpoint** — Typically `https://catalog-service.adobe.io/graphql` for production.

### Storefront Scope
- **Product types** — Simple, configurable, grouped, or bundle products. Configurable products require swatch/option handling in PDP.
- **Category structure** — Flat or nested categories. Nested categories require breadcrumb and navigation configuration.
- **Desired features** — Mini-cart, full cart page, checkout, customer account, wishlists. Each feature requires specific dropin components.

## Step 2: Scaffold with Commerce Site Creator

The Commerce Site Creator at `tools.aem.live` automates the initial project scaffolding:

1. **Navigate to Commerce Site Creator** — Go to `https://tools.aem.live` and select the commerce project template.
2. **Connect the GitHub account** — Authorize the AEM Code Sync GitHub app. The tool creates a new repository from the commerce boilerplate template.
3. **Set the Commerce instance** — Enter the Commerce URL and API credentials collected in Step 1.
4. **Configure the site name and domain** — Set the project name (used for the GitHub repo) and the desired production domain.
5. **Complete scaffolding** — The tool creates the repository and configures `fstab.yaml` (content source mapping) and the initial `configs.xlsx` or `.helix/config` with commerce settings.

After scaffolding, verify the repository contains: `head.html`, `scripts/` (aem.js, scripts.js, delayed.js), `styles/` (styles.css, fonts.css), `blocks/` (product-details, product-list-page, commerce-cart, commerce-mini-cart, commerce-checkout), `configs.xlsx`, and `fstab.yaml`. ### Verify the Connection

Test the Catalog Service connection by querying a known product:

## Step 4: Set Up Product Blocks

### Product Detail Page (PDP)

The PDP block renders a full product detail page. It uses the `@dropins/storefront-pdp` dropin component.

1. **Verify the PDP block exists** in `/blocks/product-details/`. The commerce boilerplate should include this.
2. **Configure the product route** — Product pages are typically mapped to a URL pattern like `/products/{url-key}`. The PDP block extracts the URL key from the current path and queries Catalog Service.
3. **Create the PDP template document** — In the content source (Google Docs/SharePoint), create a page that contains only the `product-details` block declaration. This document acts as the template for all product pages.
4. **Customize PDP slots** — Dropin components expose slots for customization. Common PDP slots include `Title`, `Price`, `Description`, `ShortDescription`, `Attributes`, `Options` (for configurable products), `Quantity`, and `Actions` (add to cart).

### Product Listing Page (PLP)

The PLP block renders category pages with product grids.

1. **Verify the PLP block exists** in `/blocks/product-list-page/`.
2. **Configure category routing** — PLP pages map to category URL patterns (e.g., `/categories/{category-url-key}`).
3. **Set up product cards** — Each product in the grid uses a product card component displaying image, name, price, and a link to the PDP.
4. **Configure pagination and sorting** — The PLP dropin supports pagination, sort-by options (price, name, relevance), and filter facets.

### Verify Product Rendering

After configuring both blocks, test by navigating to:
- A PDP URL: `https://main--{repo}--{org}.aem.page/products/{known-product-url-key}`
- A PLP URL: `https://main--{repo}--{org}.aem.page/categories/{known-category-url-key}`

Check that product names, images, prices, and descriptions render. If the page is blank, inspect the browser console for API errors (CORS issues, authentication failures, missing products).

## Step 5: Configure Mini-Cart and Checkout

### Mini-Cart

1. **Enable the mini-cart block** — The `commerce-mini-cart` block renders a slide-out cart overlay when items are added.
2. **Wire the "Add to Cart" action** — The PDP's `Actions` slot includes an add-to-cart button. Verify that clicking it triggers the mini-cart overlay.
3. **Configure cart data persistence** — Cart state is stored client-side (localStorage) and synced with the Commerce backend via the Cart API. Verify that adding a product persists across page navigation.

### Checkout (if in scope)

1. **Enable the checkout block** — The `commerce-checkout` block provides a multi-step checkout flow (shipping, payment, review).
2. **Configure payment integration** — Payment methods are configured on the Adobe Commerce backend. The checkout dropin renders payment options based on the backend configuration.
3. **Test the full flow** — Add a product, open the cart, proceed to checkout, and verify each step renders. Use a test payment method in staging.

## Step 6: Set Up Live Search

Adobe Live Search provides AI-powered search and category merchandising for the storefront.

1. **Verify Live Search is enabled** on the Commerce instance — Check Commerce admin under Marketing > SEO & Search > Live Search.
2. **Configure the search block** — The commerce boilerplate includes a search input component. Verify it is wired to the Live Search API endpoint (`https://commerce.adobe.io/search/graphql`).
3. **Set the Live Search API key** — This may be the same as the Catalog Service API key or a separate key depending on the Commerce Services Connector configuration.
4. **Test search functionality** — Search for a known product name. Verify results return and link to the correct PDP pages.
5. **Configure search suggestions** — Live Search supports typeahead suggestions. Verify the search input shows suggestions as the user types.

## Step 7: Validate Product Pages

Perform a validation pass across multiple product types:

## Step 8: Verify SEO Foundations

Commerce product pages have unique SEO challenges because product data is rendered client-side. Establish foundations now; use `product-page-seo` for deep optimization later.

1. **Meta tags in head.html** — Verify that `head.html` includes a `<link rel="preconnect">` to the Catalog Service domain and the Commerce media domain.
2. **Dynamic meta tags** — The PDP block should set `<title>` and `<meta name="description">` dynamically from product data. Verify these update after the product data loads.
3. **Canonical URLs** — Product pages should set a canonical URL matching the storefront URL pattern (not the Commerce admin URL).
4. **Robots.txt** — Ensure product and category URL patterns are not blocked. Verify `robots.txt` at the root allows crawling of `/products/` and `/categories/` paths.
5. **Structured data hook** — Verify there is a mechanism (or placeholder) in the PDP block to inject `Product` schema.org JSON-LD after product data loads.

## Key Principles

1. **Start with the Commerce Site Creator.** It eliminates configuration errors by scaffolding a known-good commerce project structure. Manual setup of the commerce boilerplate is error-prone.
2. **Validate the Catalog Service connection before configuring blocks.** If the API connection fails, no product block will render. Fix the connection first.
3. **Test with real catalog data, not mocked data.** Catalog Service edge cases (missing images, zero-price products, disabled products) only surface with real data.
4. **Product pages are route-based, not document-based.** Unlike standard EDS pages, PDP and PLP pages do not have individual source documents. The source document is a template; the product data comes from the API.
5. **Dropin components are customized via slots and CSS, not by forking.** Modifying the dropin source directly creates an upgrade burden. Use the documented slot API and CSS custom properties.
6. **SEO requires explicit attention for commerce pages.** Because product data is rendered client-side, search engines may not index it without additional work (structured data, pre-rendering, meta tag injection).
