**Critical error**: Humans apply linear-domain tools (prediction, optimization, control) to complex domains where they fundamentally don't work.

**Linear domains** (prediction works):

**Complex domains** (prediction fails):

### 3. The Turkey Problem: Absence of Evidence ≠ Evidence of Absence

**The parable**: A turkey fed for 1,000 days believes the farmer cares for it. Each day without harm increases confidence. Then comes Thanksgiving.

**Pattern**: Stability derived from past non-variation is illusory. The longer things remain stable under artificial suppression, the more dangerous the system becomes.

**Key distinction**:
- **Structural fragility** = the actual cause of system failure (the underlying architecture)
- **Catalyst/trigger** = the specific event that happens to release accumulated stress (largely unpredictable and unimportant)

**Core principle**: "When you give a system a little wiggle room, it will reveal its properties."

**Information flow**:

**Two cognitive biases**:
1. **Action bias**: Belief that doing something is always better than doing nothing

### 1. Stability Theater
**Pattern**: Claiming a system is safe because it hasn't failed recently or because variation has been suppressed.
