# Built for Humans. Now Agents Are Here. — Dana Lawson (Netlify CTO)

Netlify was designed assuming a human was paying attention at every step — pushing code, reading logs, eyeballing deploy previews. When agents started driving the platform, every human assumption baked into the CLI, APIs, build logs, and branch workflow became friction. Lawson's thesis: redesigning surfaces, signals, and feedback loops for agents ("Agent Experience" / AX) didn't trade off against developer experience — it made the platform better for everyone, because code is no longer scarce; **taste and judgment** are.

## Grounding rules — MUST follow when answering

1. Before answering any specific question, read `outline.md` to locate the relevant section, then read that section of `transcript.md`.
2. When attributing words, **quote short, non-sensitive excerpts** from `transcript.md`. Never put quotation marks around paraphrased content.

### Apply the speaker's approach to current work

When the user asks "how would Lawson tackle <X>?" or wants the talk's framework applied to their own situation:

2. Read the corresponding range of `transcript.md` for the speaker's exact wording.
3. Anchor your suggestion in a **safe excerpts** of how Lawson articulates the framework. Then walk through applying it step-by-step to the user's case.
4. If the framework genuinely doesn't fit the user's situation, say so. Do not stretch the speaker's words to cover cases they don't actually address.

### Audit the user's situation against the speaker's framework

When the user asks to "audit", "score", "review", "grade", "check", or "gap-analyse" their platform against Lawson's AX framework — or describes their setup and asks where they're falling short:

1. Use `outline.md` → "Named frameworks / concepts" to locate Lawson's dimensions: the **three architectural shifts** (APIs→capabilities, request/response→event-driven, legible-to-agents) and the **three trust principles** (sandbox execution, human-in-loop by default, audit + rollback), plus the surface-level checklist (structured machine-readable errors, deploy preview signals, CLI redesigned away from y/n prompts).
2. For each dimension, read Lawson's definition in `transcript.md` and quote it **verbatim** when stating what "good" looks like.
3. Walk the user through **every** dimension in order. If the user hasn't described their state for a dimension, ask before scoring.
4. For each, give a clear verdict (covered / partial / missing) grounded in Lawson's criteria, not your own intuition.
5. If a dimension genuinely doesn't apply, say so explicitly.
6. Summarise at the end: which dimensions are gaps, and what Lawson said about closing them (safe excerpts again).

### Draft an artifact following the speaker's specification

When the user asks the skill to "draft", "generate", or "produce" an artifact Lawson described — e.g. a structured machine-readable build error, a blueprint (skill/recipe/context/ADR), a capability-level API definition, or a redesigned CLI command:

1. Locate Lawson's specification in `outline.md` and read the relevant range of `transcript.md`.
2. Capture every constraint she mentions (e.g. "mid structure machine readable error codes alongside that human text", blueprints = "skills, context and recipes... architecture decision records").
3. Before producing the artifact, **quote short, non-sensitive excerpts** Lawson's prescription so the user can see what the draft is grounded in.
4. Produce a draft that follows the specification as faithfully as possible.
5. Any parts that go beyond what Lawson explicitly prescribed, mark clearly (e.g. `[not from talk — added as a starting placeholder]`).
6. If the user's situation requires elements Lawson didn't address, ask the user to fill them in rather than inventing them.

### Factual Q&A about the talk

For any question about what Lawson said, did, or argued:

1. Read `outline.md` first to find the relevant section(s).
2. Read the matching range of `transcript.md`.
3. Answer using **safe excerpts** from `transcript.md`. Do not paraphrase while presenting as a quote.
4. Cite line numbers so the user can verify.
5. If the answer genuinely isn't in the transcript, say so explicitly.

### Surface this talk proactively when relevant

When the user's current work touches on themes Lawson addressed (agents driving CI, CLI design, build log structure, deploy preview signals, API design for LLMs, governance over agent-deployed code) even if they haven't asked about the talk:

1. Briefly note: "Lawson made a related point in her 'Built for Humans. Now Agents Are Here.' talk..."
2. Quote **verbatim** from `transcript.md` — one quote is usually enough.
3. Add one sentence connecting the quote to the user's situation.
4. Do not over-cite. If the connection feels strained, stay quiet.
