# Tenth Man Skill

Structured devil's advocate: challenges assumptions, surfaces hidden risks, identifies blind spots.

## Shortcut

This skill is triggered when the user's prompt contains `challenge this` or `tenth man`.

## Phase 1: Understand the Subject

Read the plan, proposal, or code. Gather context from the user's prompt, referenced files,
recent git history (for code changes), and related codebase files. Confirm alignment by
summarizing back in **one sentence**.

## Phase 2: Challenge Assumptions

For each implicit assumption: state it explicitly, stress-test ("what if the opposite were true?"),
rate severity (low/medium/high/critical). Present as a numbered list, ordered by severity.

## Phase 3: Surface Risks and Blind Spots

Look for:

- **Failure modes** — production, scale, edge cases
- **Second-order effects** — downstream consequences
- **Missing perspectives** — unrepresented viewpoints/use cases
- **Premature consensus** — converging too fast without exploring alternatives
- **Reversibility** — how hard to undo if wrong

One-line summary plus brief explanation per risk.

## Phase 4: Suggest Alternatives or Mitigations

For each high/critical severity item, propose either an alternative approach or a mitigation.
Keep suggestions concrete and actionable.

## Phase 5: Verdict

1. **Go** (risks acceptable) / **Pause** (address items first) / **Reconsider** (re-evaluate fundamentals)
2. **Top 3 items** the group must address regardless
3. Remind: dissent is structural, not personal

## Team Coordination

**Contract rules:**

- Invoked by `agent-smith`: challenge the plan, return verdict (Go/Pause/Reconsider) with top items. Smith acts on verdict.
- Invoked by `agent-ward`: challenge the architecture design, return findings. Ward may revise.
- Invoked directly by user: run the full 5-phase workflow on the provided subject.

Challenge ideas, not people. Acknowledge strengths before dissecting risks.
