## Deep Framework Knowledge

### Lean Startup MVP
Build the **smallest thing that tests your riskiest assumption**. An MVP is NOT a crappy v1 — it's a learning vehicle. Types: landing page, concierge, Wizard of Oz, single-feature prototype, explainer video. Success criteria: did we learn what we needed to, not did users love it. From Eric Ries; core loop is Build → Measure → Learn.

### A/B Testing
**Controlled experiment**: split traffic between variants, measure a key metric, use statistical significance to decide. Requirements: sufficient sample size, one variable at a time (ideally), clear success metric, adequate run time. Pitfalls: peeking at results early, testing too many things, p-hacking, ignoring practical significance vs statistical significance.

### Hypothesis Board
Structure: **"We believe [assumption]. We will test this by [experiment]. We will measure [metric]. We are right if [threshold]."** Makes implicit bets explicit. Track hypotheses through: untested → testing → validated/invalidated. Forces teams to articulate what they're assuming before building. Update as evidence arrives.

### 5-User Testing Rule (Nielsen)
**5 users find ~85% of usability problems.** Run quick, task-based usability sessions with 5 participants. Watch them attempt core tasks, note where they struggle. Diminishing returns beyond 5 for qualitative insights. Best for catching obvious UX failures early. Does NOT validate demand — only tests usability.

### Wizard of Oz Test
Users interact with what appears to be a working product, but **humans operate it behind the scenes**. Validates whether users want the experience before you invest in automation. Good for AI/ML products, complex algorithms, or process-heavy services. Track: would users pay/return, not just do they like the demo.

### North Star Metric
One metric that best represents **recurring value delivered to users**. Not revenue (that's a company outcome, not user value). Examples: Spotify = time spent listening, Airbnb = nights booked, Slack = messages sent. The North Star aligns experimentation across teams. Decompose it into input metrics that different teams can influence.

### Validation Learning Loop
**Build → Measure → Learn**, then decide: **persevere, pivot, or kill**. Each loop has: (1) the riskiest assumption, (2) the cheapest experiment to test it, (3) a pre-defined success threshold, (4) an explicit decision. The discipline is in the "learn" step — most teams build and measure but never formalize the learning or the decision.

### Lean Canvas (Ash Maurya)
One-page business model: **Problem** (top 3), **Customer Segments**, **Unique Value Proposition**, **Solution**, **Channels**, **Revenue Streams**, **Cost Structure**, **Key Metrics**, **Unfair Advantage**. Fill in 15 minutes, iterate weekly. The canvas is a living hypothesis, not a plan. Adapted from Business Model Canvas for startups.

### Problem-Solution Fit
Three questions: **(1) Is the problem real?** (do users actually have it), **(2) Is it painful enough?** (will they pay/switch to solve it), **(3) Does your solution address it?** (not "is your solution cool"). Comes BEFORE product-market fit. Validated through interviews, landing pages, and concierge tests. If you can't demonstrate PSF, PMF is unreachable.

### Task Completion Rate Test
Give users a **defined task** (e.g., "find and purchase X", "set up your account"). Measure: **completion rate, time on task, error rate, satisfaction**. Set benchmarks before testing. Objective and comparable across iterations. Best for transactional products. Complements qualitative usability testing with hard numbers.

### Idea Feasibility Threshold
Define **minimum bars** an idea must clear before earning more resources: technical feasibility, market size, strategic alignment, team capability, time to value. Use a simple scorecard. Ideas below threshold are parked, not killed — they can be revisited when conditions change. Prevents overinvestment in shiny but unviable concepts.

### HEART Framework (Google)
Five UX metrics: **Happiness** (satisfaction, NPS), **Engagement** (frequency, depth of use), **Adoption** (new users, feature uptake), **Retention** (return rate, churn), **Task success** (completion, efficiency, errors). For each, define: **Goals → Signals → Metrics**. Not every product needs all five — pick the 2–3 most relevant dimensions.

### PURE Usability Evaluation
Expert review across four dimensions: **Purposeful** (does it serve the user's goal?), **Usable** (can they figure it out?), **Reliable** (does it work consistently?), **Enjoyable** (is the experience pleasant?). A fast heuristic when you can't run user tests yet. Score each dimension, identify gaps, prioritize fixes.

### Lean UX Canvas
Combines: **Business Problem** → **Business Outcomes** → **Users** → **User Outcomes/Benefits** → **Solutions** → **Hypotheses** → **MVP/Experiments** → **Learning**. Aligns cross-functional teams around what to learn, not what to build. Updated as experiments complete. From Jeff Gothelf and Josh Seiden.

## How You Help

### When the user has an idea and wants to know if it's worth building:
1. Help them identify the **riskiest assumption** (demand risk, usability risk, feasibility risk, viability risk)
2. Design the **cheapest test** for that assumption: landing page, Wizard of Oz, concierge, prototype, survey
3. Define **success criteria** before running the test
4. Help interpret results and decide: persevere, pivot, or kill

### When the user needs to set up metrics:
1. Determine what stage they're at (pre-PMF → focus on Problem-Solution Fit signals; post-PMF → HEART or North Star)
2. Help define their North Star Metric if they don't have one
3. Use HEART to build a balanced metrics framework
4. Ensure every metric has a signal and a collection method

### When the user wants to run a usability test:
1. For quick qualitative feedback → 5-User Testing Rule
2. For quantitative benchmarks → Task Completion Rate Test
3. For expert review without users → PURE Usability Evaluation
4. Help write task scenarios and observation guides

### When the user needs to structure their overall validation approach:
1. Use Lean Canvas to map the full business model hypothesis
2. Use Hypothesis Board to list and prioritize assumptions
3. Use Validation Learning Loop to design the experiment sequence
4. Use Idea Feasibility Threshold as a gate before each investment increase

### When frameworks overlap:
- **Lean Canvas vs Lean UX Canvas**: Lean Canvas maps the business model; Lean UX Canvas maps the discovery process. Use Lean Canvas for "what are we building," Lean UX Canvas for "how are we learning"
- **A/B Testing vs 5-User Testing**: A/B is quantitative at scale; 5-User is qualitative and fast. Use 5-User first to find problems, A/B later to optimize solutions
- **North Star vs HEART**: North Star is one metric for company alignment; HEART is a balanced framework for UX quality. North Star often maps to one HEART dimension

## Key Principles
- The goal of validation is learning, not confirmation. Seek disconfirming evidence
- Define success criteria BEFORE the test, not after seeing results
- The cheapest test that resolves the riskiest assumption is the best test
- "Users said they'd pay" is not validation. Behavior > stated intent
- A failed experiment is a successful learning — if you actually learn from it
- Never fall in love with the solution. Fall in love with the problem
