# Weird Worldbuilding — The World That Won't Be Mapped

The suite's systematic skills define axioms, trace consequences, maintain consistency. This skill is the opposite pole — worlds where mystery is structural, not a gap to be filled. The New Weird (Miéville, VanderMeer, Kiernan) builds worlds that are internally consistent but not fully comprehensible.

## The Systematization Spectrum

| Pole | Effect | Practitioners |
|------|--------|--------------|
| Hard systematic | Satisfaction, puzzle-solving | Sanderson, Rothfuss |
| Soft systematic | Mystery, awe | Tolkien, Le Guin |
| Weird | Unease, fascination, cosmic insignificance | Miéville, VanderMeer |
| Surreal | Disorientation, symbolic resonance | Borges, Kafka, Murakami |

Most works combine positions. Miéville is systematic about politics but weird about metaphysics.

## Core Techniques

### The Glimpse
Name things without explaining them. Reference events, places, creatures in passing. The reader builds a mental model from fragments — incompleteness creates fascination. The iceberg inverted: imply 200% while showing 20%.

### The Unreliable World
The world itself is unstable. Spaces that shouldn't exist. Creatures that contradict biology. Area X consistently defies understanding — that consistency-of-defiance IS the axiom.

### The Numinous Object
Something that resists comprehension. The more you examine it, the less you understand. Describe effects precisely; leave causes ambiguous.

### The Estrangement Cascade
Start familiar, introduce incremental wrongness until nothing is as it seemed. Early descriptions almost normal; details accumulate into destabilization.

## Weird + Systematic Hybrid
Pick which domains are systematic and which are weird. Systematic politics + weird biology (Miéville). Systematic ecology + weird consciousness (VanderMeer). The contrast makes both poles hit harder.

## Le Guin's Carrier Bag as Weird Structure

The carrier bag story — gathering rather than hunting, container rather than weapon — is a form of weird *structure*. The narrative doesn't drive toward a point (systematic story structure) but accumulates elements in relationship (weird story structure). The meaning is in the collection, not the conclusion.

## Anti-Patterns
1. Random ≠ weird — genuine weird has its own consistency. 2. Weird as lazy worldbuilding excuse — it requires MORE thought. 3. Explaining the numinous — full explanation kills it. 4. All weird, no anchor — without systematic elements, pure weird exhausts.

## Relationship to Other Skills
**Magic-system-design**: The systematic pole; this is the anti-pole. Together they give full range. **World-bible**: Weird worlds need meta-axioms ("this domain resists comprehension"). **Style DNA**: Dimension 14 (Epistemic Stance) maps directly. **Figurative language**: Weird leans on biological metaphor, synesthesia, defamiliarization. **Narrative geometry**: Weird narratives use spirals, radials, carrier-bag structures.
