**Don't use this skill for**: Single-agent planning problems, centralized optimization, systems where "agents" are just objects with methods (no real autonomy), LLM prompt engineering (unless building true multiagent LLM systems).

## Core Mental Models

### 1. Environment-First Architecture Selection

**The principle**: Agent architecture complexity must match environment observability and dynamics, not domain sophistication.

**The framework**:

**Why it matters**: Starting with "what cool AI should the agent have?" inverts the design process. A Mars rover (inaccessible, partially observable, dynamic environment) needs fundamentally different architecture than a chess program (fully observable, deterministic, static), regardless of domain complexity. Environment characterization determines minimum viable architecture; domain determines sufficient capability.

**The test**: Can you specify your environment on these axes: accessible, deterministic, episodic, static, discrete? If not, you can't make principled architecture decisions yet.

### 2. Autonomy as Control Inversion, Not Anthropomorphism

**The principle**: An agent differs from an object because it encapsulates control—it decides whether to act on requests, not just how.

**The inversion**:
- **Object paradigm**: Caller controls execution timing/sequence (`object.method()` → immediate execution)
- **Agent paradigm**: Message sender makes request; receiver decides if/when/how to respond based on its goals, beliefs, commitments

**Why it matters**: This isn't philosophical—it's architectural. In distributed systems without global locks or guaranteed response times, you *can't* rely on synchronous control flow. "Agent-oriented" design means specifying desired behavior under the constraint that you cannot dictate execution. This forces explicit reasoning about:
- Request semantics (command vs. query vs. negotiation)
- Failure modes (ignore, refuse, partial compliance)
- Coordination protocols (you must convince, not command)

**The error**: Treating agents as asynchronous objects. True agent systems require speech act semantics, commitment models, or contract protocols—mechanisms that acknowledge control inversion.

### 3. Coordination as Emergent Necessity

**The principle**: Coordination requirements emerge from environment properties (partial observability, non-determinism, resource contention), not from a design preference for "collaboration."

**The forcing function**: 
- **Partial observability** → No single agent has complete information; must share/synthesize observations
- **Non-deterministic actions** → No single agent can guarantee outcomes; need redundancy or contingency coordination
- **Resource contention** → Multiple agents want same resources; need allocation/negotiation mechanisms
- **Goal dependencies** → One agent's goals require another's actions; need task decomposition/delegation protocols

**The DVMT example** (Distributed Vehicle Monitoring Testbed): Aircraft tracking with non-overlapping sensor coverage. No single agent can track a vehicle across its entire trajectory. Coordination isn't "nice"—it's the only way to maintain continuous tracks. The question shifts from "should we coordinate?" to "what's the minimal coordination protocol that prevents track loss?"

**Design implication**: Characterize environment first → identify coordination necessities → design minimal sufficient protocols. Over-coordinating wastes bandwidth/cycles; under-coordinating causes failures.

### 4. Commitment Strategies Calibrated to Dynamics

**The principle** (Kinny & Georgeff experiments): Agent boldness—how persistently it pursues goals despite changing circumstances—must track environment volatility.

**The empirical result**:
- **Bold agents** (never reconsider intentions until success/failure): Dominate in static environments (avoid wasted reconsideration), catastrophically fail in dynamic environments (pursue obsolete goals)
- **Cautious agents** (constantly reconsider): Excel in dynamic environments (adapt quickly), waste cycles in static ones (thrash on stable goals)

**The tuning parameter**: Meta-level strategy determining reconsideration frequency. No universal "best practice"—optimal boldness is environment-dependent.

**Why it matters**: 
1. Destroys one-size-fits-all agent design patterns
2. Makes explicit that *when to think* is as important as *what to think*
3. Provides empirical basis for real-time reasoning tradeoffs (deliberation cost vs. opportunity cost of stale plans)

**Design question**: What's your environment's change rate relative to deliberation cost? If changes happen faster than replanning, you need reactive layers or approximate methods.

### 5. Common Knowledge as Expensive Ideal, Distributed Knowledge as Pragmatic Reality

**The formal result** (Coordinated Attack Problem): Without guaranteed message delivery, common knowledge of any fact requires infinite message exchange. Even with guarantees, establishing "everyone knows that everyone knows that..." requires costly protocol rounds.

**The hierarchy**:

- Safety properties requiring common knowledge may be **unachievable** in realistic distributed systems (packet loss, asynchrony)
- Protocols claiming "all agents agree" need scrutiny—do they actually establish common knowledge, or just eventual consistency?
- Many coordination problems solvable with distributed knowledge (weaker, cheaper) don't actually need common knowledge

**Design heuristic**: Start with distributed knowledge requirements (what must be collectively knowable?), escalate to common knowledge only when proven necessary (what must everyone know everyone knows?), verify your communication model can actually establish it.

## Anti-Patterns

### 1. **Architecture-First Design** (Wooldridge's central warning)
- **Error**: Choosing "BDI architecture" or "reinforcement learning agent" before characterizing environment
- **Why it fails**: Imposing deliberation on real-time domains causes missed deadlines; using reactive agents in non-Markov environments loses necessary state
- **Correct approach**: Environment characterization → architecture selection → capability implementation

### 2. **Anthropomorphic Agent Modeling**
- **Error**: Attributing human-like "beliefs" or "desires" without grounding in computational models
- **Why it fails**: "The agent believes X" is meaningless without specifying what observations produce that belief state
- **Correct approach**: Ground mental states in local states, observation partitions, and runs (see epistemic logic reference)

### 3. **Coordination for Coordination's Sake**
- **Error**: Adding communication protocols or consensus mechanisms without identifying what environmental property forces coordination
- **Why it fails**: Wastes bandwidth, adds latency, creates new failure modes (Byzantine faults, network partitions)
- **Correct approach**: Identify coordination necessity (partial observability? resource contention?), design minimal sufficient protocol

### 4. **Assuming Common Knowledge by Default**
- **Error**: Protocols that implicitly require "everyone knows everyone agreed" without explicit common knowledge establishment

Someone has **not** internalized Wooldridge if they:
- Jump to architecture selection before characterizing the environment on accessibility, determinism, episodicity, dynamism, discreteness
- Say "agents should coordinate" without specifying what environmental property makes coordination necessary
- Describe agent mental states (beliefs, goals, intentions) without grounding them in observable computational structures (local states, message histories)
- Claim their protocol achieves "agreement" or "consensus" without distinguishing between everyone-knows and common-knowledge guarantees
- Propose a single "best" commitment strategy without referencing environment dynamics

Someone **has** internalized Wooldridge if they:
- **Start every agent system design** with environment characterization, then justify architecture based on those properties
- **Distinguish between coordination mechanisms** by the necessity they address (partial observability → info sharing, resource contention → allocation protocols, goal dependencies → task delegation)
- **Speak precisely** about knowledge levels ("This requires distributed knowledge, which we can implement with a query protocol, not common knowledge, which would require Byzantine consensus")
- **Reference the Kinny & Georgeff results** when discussing commitment—recognize that optimal boldness is a tunable parameter dependent on environment change rates
- **Ground formal claims** in computational models (e.g., "Agent i knows φ means φ is true in all states compatible with i's observations")
- **Invoke control inversion** when explaining why agent systems differ from distributed objects—agents encapsulate control, not just state/behavior

**The definitive tell**: They can explain why a simple reactive agent in a partially observable, non-deterministic, dynamic environment is harder to design correctly than a complex deliberative agent in a fully observable, deterministic, static environment—and defend it with Wooldridge's environment taxonomy rather than intuition.
