Buffer Manager
PostgreSQL's shared-buffer manager — `src/backend/storage/buffer/bufmgr.c` — the 8 KB shared-memory page cache underneath every heap/index read. Covers pin/unpin lifecycle, BufferDesc + hash table, clock-sweep replacement, BufferAccessStrategy (ring buffers for VACUUM / bulk read / bulk write), local buffers for temp tables, and pinning discipline. Loads when the user asks about `shared_buffers` sizing, pin/unpin semantics, buffer-pin deadlock scenarios, adding a new BufferAccessStrategy ring, `BufferDesc` state bits (VALID / DIRTY / IO_IN_PROGRESS), the clock-sweep replacement algorithm, or debugging "buffer leak" WARNINGs. Skip when the ask is about the AIO layer sitting between shmem and disk (see `aio-readstream`) or about visibility/hint bits (see the sibling idiom `hint-bits-setbufferdirty`).

From the source SKILL.md
Every read of any heap or index page in PG goes through the buffer manager. It maintains an in-memory cache (sized by shared_buffers) of 8 KB pages, indexed by (rlocator, forknum, blocknum). Pins reserve a buffer for a caller; refcount → 0 lets the clock-sweep evictor pick it as a replacement candidate.
What this skill does
Buffer Manager is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the backend sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/buffer-manager/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.
Who uses this skill
The Buffer Manager Claude Code skill is built for software engineers, backend developers, full-stack teams, and technical leads building and maintaining production systems. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 158,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

Frequently asked questions
How do I install the Buffer Manager Claude Code skill?
Install via the ClaudSkills desktop app (one click) or copy
SKILL.md from the source repository to
~/.claude/skills/buffer-manager/SKILL.md and restart Claude Code. Both flows are detailed at

Is this skill free to install?
Yes. ClaudSkills is an open registry — every skill keeps its source repository's license, and manual install via copy is free. ClaudSkills Pro ($9/mo, $79/yr, or $149 one-time) adds one-click install via the desktop app and a multi-signal Quality Score.
When should I use the Buffer Manager skill?
Use Buffer Manager when your Claude Code task falls under the Engineering category — specifically in the backend area. Claude Code auto-discovers installed skills and invokes the right one based on the task description, so you can also ask Claude directly (e.g. "use Buffer Manager" or describe the task and let Claude pick). Browse related skills at
/category/engineering/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Buffer Manager skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a
SKILL.md file that lives under
~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools). Skills are auto-discovered at session start. Buffer Manager is one of 67,000+ skills indexed in the open ClaudSkills catalog, classified under the Engineering category. Learn more at
