Dimensional Data Modeling

Category: Product  ·  Sub-category: product-misc  ·  Last updated:
type:review
Designs, reviews, and hardens Kimball-style dimensional models: star schemas, conformed dimensions, bus matrix, slowly changing dimensions. Use when modeling analytical data for a warehouse, lakehouse, or BI semantic layer: declaring a fact table's grain, deciding whether something is a fact or a dimension attribute, picking an SCD type for an attribute that changes, or drafting the bus matrix that makes cross-process reporting reconcile. MUST be used whenever star-schema DDL, a dbt mart, or a model spec is reviewed, checked over, or handed to an ETL or engineering team - mixed grains, nullable foreign keys, descriptive attributes in fact tables, snowflaked dimensions and a type 2 dimension keyed on its business key are cheap to catch there and expensive to catch once history is loaded. Also use when preparing or facilitating a modeling workshop with business stakeholders, and when inheriting an unfamiliar warehouse whose reports disagree with each other. Ships an offline checker (scripts/dim_check.py).

From the source SKILL.md

The grain declaration is the binding contract. It states exactly what one row of a fact table represents, and every later decision inherits its mistakes: a dimension is admissible only if it is single-valued at the grain, a measure is admissible only if it is true at the grain. Declare it before choosing dimensions or facts, in one sentence, at the atomic level the source captures. A model whose grain was declared vaguely cannot be repaired by fixing the ETL or the BI layer; it gets restated, which means reloading history.

What this skill does

Dimensional Data Modeling is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the product-misc sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/dimensional-data-modeling/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

When to invoke it: Use when modeling analytical data for a warehouse, lakehouse, or BI semantic layer: declaring a fact table's grain, deciding whether something is a fact or a dimension attribute, picking an SCD type for an attribute that changes, or drafting the bus matrix that makes cross-process reporting reconcile.

Who uses this skill

The Dimensional Data Modeling Claude Code skill is built for product managers, product designers, and cross-functional teams planning, shipping, and measuring product features. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 196,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Dimensional Data Modeling Claude Code skill?
Install via the ClaudSkills desktop app (one click) or copy SKILL.md from the source repository to ~/.claude/skills/dimensional-data-modeling/SKILL.md and restart Claude Code. Both flows are detailed at claudskills.com/install/.
What does the Dimensional Data Modeling skill do?
Designs, reviews, and hardens Kimball-style dimensional models: star schemas, conformed dimensions, bus matrix, slowly changing dimensions. Use when modeling analytical data for a warehouse, lakehouse, or BI semantic layer: declaring a fact table's grain, deciding whether something is a fact or a dimension attribute, picking an SCD type for an attribute that changes, or drafting the bus matrix that makes cross-process reporting reconcile. Is this skill free to install?
Yes. ClaudSkills is an open registry — every skill keeps its source repository's license, and manual install via copy is free. ClaudSkills Pro ($9/mo, $79/yr, or $149 one-time) adds one-click install via the desktop app and a multi-signal Quality Score.
When should I use the Dimensional Data Modeling skill?
Use Dimensional Data Modeling when your Claude Code task falls under the Product category — specifically in the product misc area. Claude Code auto-discovers installed skills and invokes the right one based on the task description, so you can also ask Claude directly (e.g. "use Dimensional Data Modeling" or describe the task and let Claude pick). Browse related skills at /category/product/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Dimensional Data Modeling skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file that lives under ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools). Skills are auto-discovered at session start. Dimensional Data Modeling is one of 67,000+ skills indexed in the open ClaudSkills catalog, classified under the Product category.
