Dockerfile Hardening

Category: Engineering  ·  Sub-category: devops  ·  Last updated:
lang:pythontool:dockertype:review
Harden a container image before it ships: a bundled script flags a Dockerfile that runs as root, uses unpinned or latest base images, puts secrets in ENV or ARG, pipes remote scripts to a shell, leaves apt layers unclean, makes files world-writable or has no HEALTHCHECK, and the file is rewritten as a smaller, pinned, non-root multi-stage build. Use when asked to \"review my Dockerfile\", to check an image is safe to publish, or to harden, slim down or write a Dockerfile for a Python or Node app. Not for Kubernetes manifests (use k8s-manifest-review) or docker-compose networking.

From the source SKILL.md

The bundled linter finds the seventeen most common Dockerfile mistakes with an id, a severity, the line and a fix. This skill runs it, explains each finding, and applies the reference pattern in [references/patterns.md](references/patterns.md) to produce a Dockerfile that is reproducible (pinned), small (multi-stage, clean layers), and runs as a non-root user with a health check.

What this skill does

Dockerfile Hardening is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the devops sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/dockerfile-hardening/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

When to invoke it: Use when asked to \"review my Dockerfile\", to check an image is safe to publish, or to harden, slim down or write a Dockerfile for a Python or Node app. Not for Kubernetes manifests (use k8s-manifest-review) or docker-compose networking.

Who uses this skill

The Dockerfile Hardening Claude Code skill is built for software engineers, backend developers, full-stack teams, and technical leads building and maintaining production systems. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 211,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Dockerfile Hardening Claude Code skill?
Install via the ClaudSkills desktop app (one click) or copy SKILL.md from the source repository to ~/.claude/skills/dockerfile-hardening/SKILL.md and restart Claude Code. Both flows are detailed at claudskills.com/install/.
What does the Dockerfile Hardening skill do?
Harden a container image before it ships: a bundled script flags a Dockerfile that runs as root, uses unpinned or latest base images, puts secrets in ENV or ARG, pipes remote scripts to a shell, leaves apt layers unclean, makes files world-writable or has no HEALTHCHECK, and the file is rewritten as a smaller, pinned, non-root multi-stage build. Is this skill free to install?
Yes. ClaudSkills is an open registry — every skill keeps its source repository's license, and manual install via copy is free. ClaudSkills Pro ($9/mo, $79/yr, or $149 one-time) adds one-click install via the desktop app and a multi-signal Quality Score.
When should I use the Dockerfile Hardening skill?
Use Dockerfile Hardening when your Claude Code task falls under the Engineering category — specifically in the devops area. Claude Code auto-discovers installed skills and invokes the right one based on the task description, so you can also ask Claude directly (e.g. "use Dockerfile Hardening" or describe the task and let Claude pick). Browse related skills at /category/engineering/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Dockerfile Hardening skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file that lives under ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools). Skills are auto-discovered at session start. Dockerfile Hardening is one of 67,000+ skills indexed in the open ClaudSkills catalog, classified under the Engineering category.
