Forced Outage Drill
Simulate a dependency outage on a live host (upstream DNS, an API endpoint, a backup target, a peer) to prove a watcher, failover or alert actually works, without paging anyone and without the drill passing for the wrong reason. Covers proving the block bites (nft counters plus a control) before trusting any result, why container egress needs a forward-hook chain, cache and stale-answer layers that hide the outage, a systemd-run dead-man revert, testing a new watcher against a throwaway instance on a spare port with stubbed alerting, and the drill sequence: baseline, failure surfaces, failover, recovery, cleanup. Trigger phrases include "failover drill", "simulate an outage", "force a failover", "test the watcher", "blackhole the upstream", "nft drop for a test", "dead-man revert", "does the alert actually fire", "drill without paging", "stub telegram", "prove the failover works".

From the source SKILL.md
A drill is only evidence if the outage really happened. The usual failure isn't a crash; it's a green result because the simulated fault never reached the thing under test. On 2026-10-23 a single DNS session hit this three times. All three looked like "the system copes fine":
What this skill does
Forced Outage Drill is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the testing sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/forced-outage-drill/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.
Who uses this skill
The Forced Outage Drill Claude Code skill is built for software engineers, backend developers, full-stack teams, and technical leads building and maintaining production systems. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 211,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).
