Node Memory Leak Hunting

Category: Engineering  ·  Sub-category: performance  ·  Last updated:
lang:javascript
Use when a Node.js process is growing memory unbounded in production, hits OOM, restarts on schedule, or shows monotonic RSS in Grafana. Triggers: heap snapshot diff (Comparison mode in Chrome DevTools), v8.writeHeapSnapshot, --heapsnapshot-signal=SIGUSR2, clinic doctor / clinic heap, Allocation sampling vs Allocation instrumentation timeline, --max-old-space-size, retainers / dominators, EventEmitter listener leak, closures over big objects, Buffer.allocUnsafe, intern caches that never evict. NOT for CPU profiling (use clinic doctor for the smoke signal then a CPU-specific skill), Go pprof, browser-side memory leaks, or worker_threads-only debugging.

About this skill (catalog notes)

Node Memory Leak Hunting includes 12 code blocks for direct copy-paste. At roughly 2,099 words the SKILL.md is on the longer end of the catalog distribution.

How Node Memory Leak Hunting fits the catalog

Node Memory Leak Hunting sits in the Engineering category under the performance sub-topic in the ClaudSkills catalog. There are 10 related skills indexed alongside it; comparing a few before installing usually reveals which fits your workflow best.

These notes are auto-generated from features detected in the SKILL.md file and from this catalog's structure — they aren't part of the source repository.

From the source SKILL.md

A leak in Node.js is "RSS goes up, never comes down." V8 garbage-collects what it can prove is unreachable; a leak means something is still reachable that you didn't expect. The single most powerful tool, recommended by the Node.js diagnostics docs and the practitioner field, is the two-snapshot diff in Chrome DevTools' Memory tab. ([Node.js — Using Heap Snapshot][node-heap-snapshot])

1. Confirm the leak (Grafana shows monotonic RSS over hours).
2. Snapshot before load.
3. Drive load that exercises the suspect path.
4. Snapshot after.
5. Open both in DevTools → Memory tab → Comparison mode.
6. Sort by "Delta" desc. The retained, growing constructor at the top is your leak.

What this skill does

Node Memory Leak Hunting is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the performance sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/node-memory-leak-hunting/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

When to invoke it: Use when a Node.js process is growing memory unbounded in production, hits OOM, restarts on schedule, or shows monotonic RSS in Grafana.

Who uses this skill

The Node Memory Leak Hunting Claude Code skill is built for software engineers, backend developers, full-stack teams, and technical leads building and maintaining production systems. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 94,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Node Memory Leak Hunting Claude Code skill?
Install via the ClaudSkills desktop app (one click) or copy SKILL.md from the source repository to ~/.claude/skills/node-memory-leak-hunting/SKILL.md and restart Claude Code. Both flows are detailed at claudskills.com/install/.
What does the Node Memory Leak Hunting skill do?
Use when a Node.js process is growing memory unbounded in production, hits OOM, restarts on schedule, or shows monotonic RSS in Grafana. Triggers: heap snapshot diff (Comparison mode in Chrome DevTools), v8.writeHeapSnapshot, --heapsnapshot-signal=SIGUSR2, clinic doctor / clinic heap, Allocation sampling vs Allocation instrumentation timeline, --max-old-space-size, retainers / dominators, EventEmitter listener leak, closures over big objects, Buffer.allocUnsafe, intern caches that never evict. Is this skill free to install?
Yes. ClaudSkills is an open registry — every skill keeps its source repository's license, and manual install via copy is free. ClaudSkills Pro ($9/mo, $79/yr, or $149 one-time) adds one-click install via the desktop app and a multi-signal Quality Score.
When should I use the Node Memory Leak Hunting skill?
Use Node Memory Leak Hunting when your Claude Code task falls under the Engineering category — specifically in the performance area. Claude Code auto-discovers installed skills and invokes the right one based on the task description, so you can also ask Claude directly (e.g. "use Node Memory Leak Hunting" or describe the task and let Claude pick). Browse related skills at /category/engineering/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Node Memory Leak Hunting skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file that lives under ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools). Skills are auto-discovered at session start. Node Memory Leak Hunting is one of 67,000+ skills indexed in the open ClaudSkills catalog, classified under the Engineering category.
