Nutrition as a scientific discipline is young. The first controlled trial in the history of medicine is James Lind's 1747 scurvy experiment aboard HMS Salisbury, in which he assigned pairs of sailors to different treatments and found that citrus cured the disease. Before Lind, nutrition was folklore and humoral theory.
