Proxmox Node Systemd Service

Category: Engineering  ·  Sub-category: devops  ·  Last updated:
lang:javascripttool:docker
This skill should be used when deploying a Node.js application (Next.js, n8n, or any pnpm/npm-based app) as a native systemd service inside an unprivileged Proxmox LXC, instead of Docker — installing Node via NodeSource, running a dedicated non-root service user, building with pnpm, and exposing it only over Tailscale Serve. Also covers debugging an Ansible playbook for this pattern that never reports `changed=0` on a repeat run, a "detected dubious ownership in repository" git error, a service that's unexpectedly reachable on the plain LAN IP instead of only over Tailscale, or an app that fails to write scratch/upload files under `/tmp` despite the service showing active. Trigger phrases include "run Node app as systemd service", "NodeSource install Ansible", "pnpm build systemd", "next start binds 0.0.0.0", "HOSTNAME env var not working Next.js", "ansible git dubious ownership", "git module changed every run", "recursive chown always changed ansible", "Docker-in-LXC alternative for Node app", "ProtectSystem strict /tmp ENOENT", "PrivateTmp systemd Node app", "npm install -g version bump not applying", "creates guard blocks upgrade", "bumping n8n_version does nothing", "ansible pinned npm package upgrade".

From the source SKILL.md

Use this instead of Docker when deploying a Node.js app (dashboard, bot, small internal tool) in an unprivileged Proxmox LXC. It avoids the Docker-in-unprivileged-LXC cgroup quirks that pushed other services (Immich) to a VM, and matches the "native packages, not Docker" precedent already used for Grafana/Prometheus in this homelab. Built and verified end-to-end deploying the Homepage dashboard (gethomepage/homepage, VMID 140) — every gotcha below was hit for real, not theoretical.

What this skill does

Proxmox Node Systemd Service is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the devops sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

Who uses this skill

The Proxmox Node Systemd Service Claude Code skill is built for software engineers, backend developers, full-stack teams, and technical leads building and maintaining production systems. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 211,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

How to install

Free

Manual install (2 steps)

mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service
curl -L https://claudskills.com/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service/SKILL.md \
  -o ~/.claude/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service/SKILL.md

Or just download SKILL.md directly and drop it into ~/.claude/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service/. Claude Code auto-discovers it on next session.

Skills live at ~/.claude/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service/SKILL.md on macOS/Linux, or %USERPROFILE%\.claude\skills\proxmox-node-systemd-service\SKILL.md on Windows. See the full install guide for step-by-step instructions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Proxmox Node Systemd Service Claude Code skill?
Install via the ClaudSkills desktop app (one click) or copy SKILL.md from the source repository to ~/.claude/skills/proxmox-node-systemd-service/SKILL.md and restart Claude Code. Both flows are detailed at claudskills.com/install/.
What does the Proxmox Node Systemd Service skill do?
This skill should be used when deploying a Node.js application (Next.js, n8n, or any pnpm/npm-based app) as a native systemd service inside an unprivileged Proxmox LXC, instead of Docker — installing Node via NodeSource, running a dedicated non-root service user, building with pnpm, and exposing it only over Tailscale Serve. Is this skill free to install?
Yes. ClaudSkills is an open registry — every skill keeps its source repository's license, and manual install via copy is free. ClaudSkills Pro ($9/mo, $79/yr, or $149 one-time) adds one-click install via the desktop app and a multi-signal Quality Score.
When should I use the Proxmox Node Systemd Service skill?
Use Proxmox Node Systemd Service when your Claude Code task falls under the Engineering category — specifically in the devops area. Claude Code auto-discovers installed skills and invokes the right one based on the task description, so you can also ask Claude directly (e.g. "use Proxmox Node Systemd Service" or describe the task and let Claude pick). Browse related skills at /category/engineering/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Proxmox Node Systemd Service skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file that lives under ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools). Skills are auto-discovered at session start. Proxmox Node Systemd Service is one of 67,000+ skills indexed in the open ClaudSkills catalog, classified under the Engineering category.
