Activates for quantitative-finance, algorithmic-trading, alpha-factor work, backtests, return prediction, regime detection, portfolio construction, financial machine learning, signal pipelines, execution research, or any empirical research where conclusions must survive replication. Drives one of two disciplines: R&D mode establishes a technical capability via Heilmeier charter, TRL-tracked capability map with kill criteria, Cooper-style stage-gates, and operational prototype demonstration. Pure Research mode resolves a phenomenon via Working Backwards PR/FAQ, hash-locked pre-registration, competing-explanation pruning, and IMRAD-shaped manuscript draft. Enforces analysis depth (A0–A5 tier) as the primary deliverable: the gold standard is not "we found a thing" but "we found a thing AND we know why" at estimation or assertion level. Use whenever the user is doing serious quantitative research, including ad-hoc backtests they may later want to defend.

A protocol skill for agent-driven research in quantitative finance. The job is not to produce quick answers. The job is to keep research state honest, push analysis to estimation or assertion level, and progress by the smallest defensible step.
