Rig Task

Category: Engineering  ·  Sub-category: code-quality  ·  Last updated:
type:review
Implement one unit of work end-to-end — from a tracker issue OR an ad-hoc description: spec review, TDD (RED→GREEN→REFACTOR), pre-PR self-review, open a PR, then drive the review-bot loop to clean. Runs start→finish in one shot by default; `start`/`finish` are optional phases for pause/resume. Sibling to /rig-epic (one unit vs many). Never auto-merges unless `--auto-merge` is passed (then CI is the merge gate). Triggers on: 'implement', 'implement this', 'work on', 'pick up', 'start task', 'start <ISSUE>', 'finish task'.

From the source SKILL.md

Take a single unit of work — a tracker issue or an ad-hoc "implement this" with no issue filed — code it test-first, open a PR, drive it to a clean review, and hand back. Never auto-merges unless --auto-merge is passed (then CI gates the merge — see Step 5). This is the orchestrator over the kit's building blocks: it delegates isolation to /rig-worktree, review to /rig-review, and the fix loop to /rig-review fix, so each concern lives in one place.

What this skill does

Rig Task is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the code-quality sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/rig-task/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

Who uses this skill

The Rig Task Claude Code skill is built for software engineers, backend developers, full-stack teams, and technical leads building and maintaining production systems. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 168,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

When should I use the Rig Task skill?
Use Rig Task when your Claude Code task falls under the Engineering category — specifically in the code quality area. Browse related skills at /category/engineering/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Rig Task skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file that lives under ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools).
