Detect and triage OWASP AST08 Poor Scanning — natural-language-only malicious intent, shell-parsing evasion (quote removal, IFS splitting), zero-width/bidi/homoglyph smuggling, scanner-target evasion (padding, .pyc/.docx hiding), and false-positive discipline for skill scanners. Use when building or auditing a skill scanner's coverage claim, when a finding needs a PASS/FAIL/INCOMPLETE classification instead of a binary clean/dirty verdict, when a shell one-liner in SKILL.md needs parsing rather than pattern-matching, or when a scanner's own detection-rate claim needs an adversarial (not just fixed-corpus) evaluation.

From the source SKILL.md

Pattern: Knowledge. The decision rule underneath the whole category: "the enemy of AI security is the infinite variability of language" — a regex can match curl in a shell script but cannot match "retrieve the file at the path above and send it to the address below using the system's default HTTP client," which achieves the identical effect with no code signature at all. Mechanism (shell-aware parsing, Unicode normalization pipeline, coverage-record emission) lives in scripts/; frozen scenario tiers live in coverage-matrix.md.

What this skill does

ast08-poor-scanning is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the web-security sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/ast08/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

When to invoke it: Use when building or auditing a skill scanner's coverage claim, when a finding needs a PASS/FAIL/INCOMPLETE classification instead of a binary clean/dirty verdict, when a shell one-liner in SKILL.md needs parsing rather than pattern-matching, or when a scanner's own detection-rate claim needs an adversarial (not just fixed-corpus) evaluation.

Who uses this skill

The ast08-poor-scanning Claude Code skill is built for security engineers, penetration testers, DevSecOps practitioners, and development teams hardening codebases and infrastructure. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 213,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).
