Minimal Agent Design

Category: Dev Tools  ·  Sub-category: dev-shells  ·  Last updated:
ai:agent
Reference for designing minimal, hackable coding-agent harnesses — linear message history over branching state, bash-only tool surfaces over bespoke tool abstractions, and subprocess isolation for safe sandboxing — inspired by mini-swe-agent's ~100-line agent achieving strong SWE-bench results through radical simplicity. Use this whenever the user is building their own agent harness or orchestration loop, debugging why an agent's behavior is hard to trace, deciding whether to add a custom tool or just let the model use a shell, or evaluating whether an agent's architecture has grown more complex than the problem actually requires.

From the source SKILL.md

The provocative question worth sitting with before building any agent harness: what's the simplest thing that could possibly work, and how much of the complexity in a typical agent scaffold is actually load-bearing versus accumulated by default? mini-swe-agent — a ~100-line agent scoring over 74% on SWE-bench Verified — is existence proof that a large fraction of typical agent-scaffold complexity is optional, not load-bearing. That doesn't mean every agent should be 100 lines; it means complexity should be added because a specific problem demands it, not by default.

What this skill does

Minimal Agent Design is a community-contributed Claude Code skill in the dev-shells sub-category. It ships as a SKILL.md file that Claude Code auto-discovers under ~/.claude/skills/minimal-agent-design/ and loads when your prompt matches the skill's trigger.

Who uses this skill

The Minimal Agent Design Claude Code skill is built for developers, power users, and teams automating repetitive workflows and improving developer experience. It's part of ClaudSkills (also referred to as Claude Skills or Claude Code Skills) — the open community-curated registry of 174,000+ SKILL.md files for Anthropic's Claude Code agent and the wider Claude ecosystem (Claude API, Claude Agent SDK).

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the Minimal Agent Design Claude Code skill?
Install via the ClaudSkills desktop app (one click) or copy SKILL.md from the source repository to ~/.claude/skills/minimal-agent-design/SKILL.md and restart Claude Code. Both flows are detailed at claudskills.com/install/.
What does the Minimal Agent Design skill do?
Reference for designing minimal, hackable coding-agent harnesses — linear message history over branching state, bash-only tool surfaces over bespoke tool abstractions, and subprocess isolation for safe sandboxing — inspired by mini-swe-agent's ~100-line agent achieving strong SWE-bench results through radical simplicity. Is this skill free to install?
Yes. ClaudSkills is an open registry — every skill keeps its source repository's license, and manual install via copy is free. ClaudSkills Pro ($9/mo, $79/yr, or $149 one-time) adds one-click install via the desktop app and a multi-signal Quality Score.
When should I use the Minimal Agent Design skill?
Use Minimal Agent Design when your Claude Code task falls under the Dev Tools category — specifically in the dev shells area. Claude Code auto-discovers installed skills and invokes the right one based on the task description, so you can also ask Claude directly (e.g. "use Minimal Agent Design" or describe the task and let Claude pick). Browse related skills at /category/tools/.
What is a Claude Code skill and how does the Minimal Agent Design skill fit in?
A Claude Code skill is a SKILL.md file that lives under ~/.claude/skills/<name>/ and tells the Claude Code CLI agent how to perform a specific task (instructions, prompts, allowed tools). Skills are auto-discovered at session start. Minimal Agent Design is one of 67,000+ skills indexed in the open ClaudSkills catalog, classified under the Dev Tools category.
